Take out French fries

Thursday night March 11 2021, I stopped in at Harold's with my family. We wanted some of their famous fries, which were always thick cut with skin on since I was a kid. Anyhow I went in and asked about fries, how big the large was and how much, she showed me the box which could hold a large portion, about 8"x8"x3". Six dollars. I said ok I'll take two, feeding our family of six people I thought that would cover it, or at least take the edge off. I waited five minutes out in the truck, then went back in and they had the boxes ready in a bag and I was on my way. Back at the truck I handed one box to the back and opened the other, disappointment, there was only a handful of fries in each box. They were hot, they tasted good, there just wasn't more than about 1/4 box of fries. I probably wont go back for take out, I've never had a bad experience eating in there for years before.

Having driven by Harold's a number of times, we decided to try it out as there always seems to be cars in the parking lot. The eggs benedict was very good and my husband's Rueben sandwich was packed with meat and he said the fries were very good. Our waitress was absolutely lovely. We'll be stopping in again when next in Kamloops.

Finally visited!

My wife was born and raised in Kamloops and has never graced the restaurant with her presence so I took her here for breakfast. Service was quick and attentive. My Eggs Bennie were good but the potatoes could have benefited from 2 more minutes on the grill. My wife enjoyed eggs, a pancake and bacon and sausages. Large portions even tho’ we ordered senior size breakfasts. Coffee was much better than Tim Horton’s.

Our family of three stopped here on our way on the way home from Vancouver. The food was expensive, served cold, the fries were very over cooked and in a clump. Waitresses were also inexperienced and very slow. So disappointed after a 6 hour drive, with 6 more hours to drive.

Be aware, web site prices differ from restaurant

We have visited Harold's on many occasions in the past, mostly for breakfast or lunch but during these Covid days I was glad to see that their web site was advertising take out. On the restaurant web site menu I thought prices were quite reasonable so I phoned in an order for pick up. Much to my dismay when I got to the till, the prices were actually 20 percent higher than advertised. When I questions the staff they just shrugged their shoulders and remarked that they do not control the web site. Curious if not deceitful.

FELT UNWELCOME

My family thought we’d stop in instead of eating fast food on our way through the city. We were seated and noticed the other two tables with people in the dinner. Another couple came in after us and about 10-15 minutes after all other tables ordered but yet the new people got their food before any of our tables. Our original 3 tables were of colour and the new people were light skinned, my wife asked why they got served first and the waitress said it’s the way the tickets get to the kitchen. So our 3 tables tickets sat somewhere for 10-15 minutes before being takin into the kitchen. The waitress never checked back on the us or the other 2 tables but made sure to ask if the last table was alright and had what they needed. It felt very (Racist) in this nice looking establishment. To top it all off our food was cold and hard hamburger buns

We stopped in in favour of supporting local business vs. A big box chain. 4 of us... 2 couples. We were welcomed by a door sigh that stated they are closed Tues and Wed due to a lack of staff so we thought they were hiring hard by covid. Our server was new and made some mistakes like bringing me a diff beer than I ordered, but she was pleasant. We sat down and the sun was right in my buddies face and we asked the server if she could close the blinds at the next booth which was occupied. She went to speak with the manager as I watched the conversation. The Mgr threw her arms in the air and shook her head. The server came back and said she could not... without even asking our booth neighbors. I then explained to the nice couple beside us and they gladly let me close the blinds. 2 of the 4 means were good. I had the liver and onions which was like a soup with way too much gravy. The liver was also breaded which was not on the menu. I ate it anyway despite being on a low carb diet. My buddy had the fried chicken and spaghetti. Also soupy with all of the sauce. The other 2 meals (a salad and I forget the 4th) were good for the ladies. This place clearly has mgmt issues and the food is not great, but seemed fresh. I would reluctantly chose the Arby's next door next time.

A former favourite.

Harold’s has been a favourite for a decent quality classic family meal for a few years. And we definitely want to acknowledge the current challenges restaurants are facing. However, we found that the meal quality has suffered noticeably. All of our meals were warm, at best; the fries were barely that, and they seem to have changed their recipes for some of their standards - and not in a good way. Our service wasn’t great either. We’re really hoping things pick up in future.

Rude servers (one claimed to be part owner), kitchen staff weren’t wearing masks/following COVID guidelines, and the food was cold. Two of their three servers were ‘training’ the third. The trainee was trying but was not being helped. This restaurant has been a staple and great restaurant for years. It was so sad to experience this.

So we arrive at around 5 and barely anyone in the restaurant. Got some water ordered right away. Took probably 40 minutes. Not once did they come over during that time. Ordered the Chicken Parmesan. Spaghetti noodles with tomato sauce and the chicken was burnt. My souvlaki was mediocre. I never have written a review before but disappointed. Left a minor tip. Couldn't be bothered to complain as they never asked how anything was. Even with Covid poor quality and service

Website prices are misleading

This would have been a more positive review, but I'm finding MULTIPLE reviews across multiple ratings sites complaining the online menu prices are not accurate and despite informing staff, nothing has changed. We chose this restaurant for dinner because of the affordable prices on their website, but prices are nearly double when you arrive in person. Felt a bit like a bait and switch. If the prices went up in the past week, sure I would be understanding, but other reviews suggest this has been a long-term problem that staff have been made aware of. I won't be back for this reason alone.

My partner and I stopped here on our way through town. Typical diner food options with large portions - after seeing some plates come from the kitchen we decided to get half orders. If you have mobility issues you might want to ask if there’s a ground floor washroom as the one I used is in the basement.

Extremely Rude Treatment

We have been eating at Harolds whenever we have been in Kamloops for the last 15 years. Today we stopped with our truck and trailer and parked on the frontage road - there were no No Parking signs. We were met. At the door by a waitress informing us that we could not park there. When we asked where we could park, she replied that that was not her problem and shut the door. We will never eat there again.

Amazing milkshakes

Good size portions for lunch and the milkshakes were amazing, made really thick with ice cream. Wish we were staying longer so we could visit again! Servers were friendly and the food didn’t take long to arrive.

HAROLD'S WAS A PLEASURABLE DINING EXPERIENCE

I hadn't been here in over 20 years but heard good things about it. It was mid afternoon St. Patrick's Day. No St. Paddy's Day specials but that is fine. My father had the fish and chips and my sister and I shared the Salisbury Steak dinner. BEST salisbury steak dinner I have had in a long time. The vegetables were fresh and cooked to perfection and the fries were homemade/home-cut and delicious! The portions were huge. My Dad was very happy with the food and so were my sister and I. We also had your lemon meringue pie and the graham cracker crust was made with butter. You could tell by the taste. Our server Mekhi was a little gem, attentive and professional. We will be back!
