Now that we can dine in, my family wanted to enjoy the hospitality and service at Taj Mahal, a Calgary Institution for decades. Of course we did take out from them regularly, but dining in is the best experience.
From the pakora's (fish and vegetable), papadum, lassi and a good selection of Indian Beer, we love the family style servings of food so that we can sample a variety of incredible flavours.
This time we had lamb, goan fish curry, chicken, okra, spinach dishes and more.
Eaten with great naan baked in their tandoori oven, it is always a delicious meal that satisfies. We took the leftovers home and had a second meal. The flavours only enhanced by the next day!

We have known the family that has owned and operated this restaurant for decades. Run by one family and then purchased by another, the restaurant is in a central part of Calgary far from the Indian community. It's off McLeod Trail south, in the basement of a building, with plenty of free parking out back.
We have never needed a reservation. It is busy but it's a large restaurant with lots of room. This particular evening was not a buffet evening and we ordered from the extensive menu.
Northern Indian cuisine is the norm here and it is really good.
Fish Pakora, Fish Curry, and a variety of vegetarian dishes that can be as mild or as spicy as you desire.
Washed down with beer from India, and finished with Chai, it is a family favourite of ours and a place we go to regularly.
Highly recommended.

As a Calgary native, I've been to Taj Mahal numerous times. After all these years, the quality of food remains excellent. More recently, I have been coming here for their lunch buffet. With far fewer buffet options in recent years, I thought to write a review drawing attention to the quality lunch buffet here. Very enjoyable, with adequate parking in the back alley lot.

Excellent restaurant. Great service. Food superior. Especially enjoyed Vegetable Biryani, Mutter Paneer, Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan. Good sized servings. Plenty for dinner next evening. Live out of town so great evening out.

Wonderful family owned business! The food is always excellent and they do takeout.
Restrictions are making lunches slow for them so let's support our great local restaurants and eat in, and bring your vaccinated friends and family!

Our favourite Indian restaurant in Calgary. The servers/ owners are so nice and the food is amazing! The gulab jamun is the best I’ve ever had and the Indian Paintbrush drinks are a must try!
My family lives in Southern AB yet has been coming for over 34 years because of the quality and atmosphere.

We have been coming here for the Monday night buffet quite often, there are many hot dishes to choose from the buffet table. On Monday night the food is generally milder to suit everybody's taste.
This time I decided to try a regular dinner night, the food was just as good and I could choose from spicy to mild curries. The service was quick since it was a quiet evening, in general a busy night would take a little bit more time for the food to be served, but the drinks would always be promptly brought to the table first.

Had their Lunch buffet, which was awesome home made style indian food, they domt try and be fine dining fancy like all those new indian places that charge allot. The Taj Mahal is a great sort of hidden spot even though its right off a MacLeod, you have tondrive in the back alley. But I recommend it to anyone looking or good value home made style indian food.

Taj Mahal is the best Indian food that I ever had. Everything is delicious: Nam , cracker (appetizer), prawn masala, vegetarian dishes , saffron rice, vegetarian rice. So many flavors and spices. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Party of five for dinner - all of the food was topnotch. We had a selection of appetizers and then mains for all. Everyone was very pleased with their choices and complimented the quality, quantity and flavour of the food. We have not ever gone for the buffet - that is our plan for our next visit.

We went to Taj Mahal for supper on a friends suggestion. Parking is at the back of the building. You walk in thru the back door and go downstairs.At first the restaurant looks a little dated in need of a reno. That is where it ends your not there to eat the decor.
We arrived at 6pm there was only one other group besides the two of us.
We were seated right away and order drinks and a mixed platter of appies.
Just a heads up mixed platter feeds 4. Everything was very tasty.
Our main dishes where Chicken Chawla,Lamb chops, coconut rice and garlic naan.
Everything we had was delicious But next time we go which we will we will not order the mixed platter plus a meal it was just too much food.
The Chichen Chawla was tender chicken in a peppery based curry just as advertised.
My husband said the Lamb chops were the best! The coconut rice was perfect as was the garlic naan. We requested another order if naan to take home.
We had the left orders to take home for another meal.
If you are going for the decor and fancy small portions this is not the restaurant for you.
If it is great Indian food and service this is a place to try.

After trying many East Indian restaurants in Calgary, we decided to give this one a shot.
The first thing we noticed is the wonderful front on Macleod Trail and what looked like extremely limited parking in the back alley.
We then noticed that there is a larger gravel area shared between the restaurant and a nightclub.
Entering the main doors the lobby allows entry to both places, the nightclub upstairs and the restaurant downstairs.
We went down the narrow stairs into the basement and both of us thought, wow, this looks and feels like a basement.
Very dim lighting and low ceilings.
To add to this ambiance, we were seated in the corner.
Water was served in stainless cups.
The buffet looked great.
There were several salads and chutneys as well as both vegetable and beef samosas.
None of the dishes were very spicy but they were flavorful.
I discussed the lack of spiciness with one of the men working and he indicated that not everyone enjoys spicy, including those from India.
What was more interesting is that none of the dishes were very hot, more like lukewarm.
They were all from chafing dishes on a steam table however, they were not hot.
I like the fact that they had some fresh cut fruit pieces, rice pudding AND Jalebi for desert, unlike so many other places that offer only one item.
Overall the food was good but, with so many others to try, it will be quite some time before we return (if ever).

Parking for the Taj is at the back off of the alley that runs behind the building.
A small group of us met here for lunch buffet and we all went away full and satisfied.
Pakoras, bajis, naan breads, chutneys, salads and my favorite Indian dishes were all to be found. Butter chicken, chicken tandoori, beef curry and a lamb curry to go along with a couple of vegetable dishes made our choices pretty difficult, so I had a little of each.
The food was tasty and none too spicy heat wise. I have had better butter chicken, but overall, the food deserved a solid 4.
One of the better Indian restaurants in Calgary... try it.
