When every other restaurant in Tulum is quiet, Hartwood is buzzing with excitement. Get there early or make a reservation because the restaurant fills up quickly. I loved the energy, the atmosphere, the service and of course the food was delicious. Fresh fish cooked over...open wood-flame, this was my vision of food in Tulum and Hartwood did not disappoint. This was a wonderful way to end our trip in Tulum.More

Hartwood is a really cool place with some yummy seafood. We made sure we had a booking as it books out a few weeks in advance. Service was a little on the slow side. Our prawn entree and grilled fish main were delicious, however the...octopus main lacked flavour. Cocktails were interesting and yummy! They also had plenty of options for my dietary restrictions (gluten free / coeliac). Very pricey experience but definitely worth it for the vibes and food.More

Delicious food. Great margaritas. Great service. Prawns especially very good! Be prepared to spend a lot as very expensive.

My husband and I are here last week. We’d visiting twice before, 9/10 yrs ago, when it felt new and fresh and exciting, when the food was excellent and you could hear each other talk. When it felt like the owner/chef cared about his clientele....The visit last week was such a let down. We had a reservation and were seated immediately, so no problems there (unlike some reviews below). The waiter came over with a drinks menu. Fairly limited, but we both found something we wanted to drink (though the cocktails were average.) Then the waiter came over with the food menu board, which he shouted to us for the next few minutes. The music is SO loud that you cannot help but feel assaulted when the waiter literally screams the menu to you. Menu is incredibly limited, very few veggie options. The food was good, but not amazing as it once was. We had lamb tacos and prawns to start. Sea bass and pork ribs to follow. Pork was the best dish. We got out of there as soon as we’d finished eating. Between the seats (which are very uncomfortable wooden benches on uneven ground) , the rushed service and the unnecessary loud music, you really are not made to feel welcome; which is obviously the point, they want to get as many diners in each night to make money. And you can really feel this. All of that’s fine if you’re paying fast food prices, but this is an expensive restaurant and honestly, whilst the food is good, the experience overall simply isn’t worth the money.More

Best food, drinks, very friendly waiters and bartenders. We had to sit at the bar although there were free tables, but it was ok. But when we were finished with our meal and enjoying our drink we were asked to sit in the back in...a lonely corner cause other People wanted to eat. It was clear, that if they are Not making further money, they want to get rid of us. Then we paid and wanted to go. Suddenly the Manager appeared at the Front door and asked in a very rude way if we wanted to leave without paying. I was so Shocked and felt so discriminated. That the whole nice experience before was gone. So my conclusion: if they See That you are Rich and bring them Money, you won‘t have any problems and the best Food and drinks in town.More

I had dinner at this restaurant early November 2022. If I just had to consider the quality of the food (I had ceviche with tropical fruits as a starter and octopus as a main course), quantity of the food, my cocktail and other drinks and...the friendliness of the waiters and staff at the bar, a five star rating might not even be enough. However, I was a single traveler on this trip and was forced by the seating host to sit at the bar. There were two small tables free, but I could not get one of them. Furthermore, these two tables remained free during the entire time I was there. You can clearly see these tables on my enclosed picture. I can only conclude Hartwood’s policy is discriminatory against single travelers, and certainly in my case without any valid reason and that was a huge blemish on the entire experience.More

Good food, nice atmosphere but we really felt extremely rushed - especially for paying 260 USD, you could expect to have a few minutes between the main course and dessert. Not a place for enjoying a relaxed dinner. On top of that, you get charged...18% tip without being asked - the place is not worth it.More

Our dinner at Hartwood on our first night in Tulum spoiled us for the rest of our vacation. Hands down the best food we have had the pleasure of dining at for quite some time. Not one dish was bad but we specifically enjoyed the...fish collar and the lamb tacos. We also ate at Arca, Kitchen Table, Bal Nak etc. but no other meal, albeit good, came close to how good the food was at Hartwood. We spent the rest of our trip wishing we could dine there again. Absolutely divine!More

This restaurant really should have AT LEAST a 4.5 star rating on Trip Advisor! It’s a must in Tulum. It has the best ambiance. The wait staff are wonderful. The drinks are amazing. And the food….. it’s out of this world. Also loved the music...and the whole vibe of the place! Highly recommend. Make a reservation ahead of time if you can.More

I am so heartbroken to write this review. You really let us down, Hartwood. We reserved weeks in advance and thought this meal would be a speical highlight of our trip. Instead we went home hungry and disappointed. First, we had to wait despite a...reservation and then were given the absolute worst table in the restaurant. While waiting, we were shown a cocktail menu. I wanted one cocktail and was pushed in the direction of another by the server. I said I don't like mezcal and he said, "You will like this or I will get you another drink." Needless to say, I didn't like it and the guy disappeared. Once we were seated, yet another cocktail was recommended. After I said I didn't like sugary drinks, I was served a very sweet pink drink ($18 + tip). I drank it because my waiter disappeared. Whe he returned he gave us a good overview of the menu and recommended a bottle of wine. We ordered it, but he came back and said they didn't have it any longer. (So then why did you recommend it?) We were told the pulpo was a must have and the pork was recommended. We started with the shrimp appetizer, which was tasty, not great, and we were left with a pool of sauce with no bread to soak it up. Then we were served pulpo that had a bad texture and just didn't taste good. We told our waiter and he seemed confused and got another waiter. He took the pulpo away and we weren't charged. So then we were left with the pork. We both took bites and it was dry and stringy. At that point, we were frustrated and just wanted to leave. Our waiter disappeared or we would have returned the pork. I wish I had read the review below where somebody said the pork was dry and stringly. Unfortunately, we were told it was a house specialty. We still had a full bottle of wine to drink, so we suffered through the big mound of dry pork because we were still very hungry and nobody was checking to see how our dinner was. After finishing the wine, we got a check which had a 15% tip included, including for the bottle of wine we poured ourselves. I asked to speak with someone and explained our experience. She suggested that we come back the next night for dinner to have a different experience. She wasn't inviting us back as a guest, she wanted us to come back again as a paying customer after having an awful experience. Are you kidding me? So we spent $200 for four gambas, dry pork and an average bottle of wine that wasn't our first choice and a cocktail that I didn't enjoy. I had the 15% tip removed and left $10 USD as a courtesy. We dined at Arca the night before and it was exquisite on every level - ambiance, food, service. They really cared that we had an enjoyable dining experience. Hartwood is living off a past reputation and sent us back to our hotel feeling so disappointed that we lost out on what could have been a memorable evening.More

The price of this place and the reviews we read had us expecting a very nice, upscale experience with delicious food and drinks. In reality we waited for over 30 minutes past our reservation time to be seated, which definitely set us off on the...wrong foot. Once seated, we had a friendly waiter that gave us good service, except that he immediately started getting our food orders without asking about drinks (ours were empty by then after the wait). We ordered the Caesar salad, shrimp, sea bass and octopus. None of the dishes particularly stood out, though they also weren’t terrible. The shrimp was sort of over cooked but the sauce it came with was delicious and probably the best part of the meal. The octopus was very bland and had no flavour, and was also overcooked. The fish was well cooked but likewise tasted fairly bland. The cocktails were quite disappointing as well, especially given the extremely high price. Overall we came away very disappointed by our “splurge” meal in Tulum, and felt that everywhere else we ate (in the town and not the beach mostly) was a lot better. It was nowhere near the quality that the price would make you expect, and did not make us feel like we had had a nice fancy dinner. The automatic 15% gratuity also felt very unnecessary. In general I would suggest eating in town and not on the beach strip since you are paying for the location more than the food.More

Hartwod is a must when coming to Tulum. Everything was delicious, still can't get over the octopus and the agave ribs 😍 our cocktails were great too. Already looking forward to our next visit, by far our favourite restaurant in Tulum.

We arrived on time and got seated after having a beautiful drink at the lounge area. The spot is absolutely lovely, no electricity (almost), only candles. Very cozy. Our server was very helpful and explain us the whole menu in English. The menu changes with...the season and the daily products the fisherman and farmers bring, can't have fresher food than this. The ceviche was outstanding and he prawns perfectly cooked. We went for a 8pounds Lobster to share and it worth the hype. Never had a Lobster that size and the meat was nice and tender inside with a nice grilled texture outside. All that come with a price but the whole experience really worth it. Will come back and recommand to every foodies. Note: get the mezcal coffee after tour mealMore

We chose to eat at Hartwood for our final night in Tulum as it came highly recommended by friends, but it quickly became the worst experience of our trip. We had a table booked for 8.30 and despite arriving 5 minutes early were kept waiting...for over half an hour to be seated. I’ve eaten at many fancy & popular restaurants in my life and this is the first time I’ve ever been made to wait this long for a booking. Quite to the contrary, high end restaurants have often sheepishly asked us to leave to honour the booking system in place. Then came the disaster of the food itself. My partner doesn’t eat fish (which happened to be 90% of the menu that is not available to see before the day itself) but the meat main courses they did have had been finished/crossed off the board already. So she choose a salad to start and lamb tacos (a starter) for her main. I chose a tropical ceviche and the ‘speciality’ lobster as a main course. The salad was an absolute joke, just a mountain of jicama with no other greens or anything of substance. Her lamb tacos were so sweet they were barely edible. Then as the starters were being finished our waiter arrived and said they had found some pork ribs to create a non-fish main course (of course no vegetarian options). So we went with that in the hope of saving our evening and her having a main she could enjoy too… The pork ribs were dreadful. Enough food to feed 3-4 on their own but so so dry and again with an incredibly sweet sauce. None of this prepared us for what was to come… My main course the lobster was the single worst and biggest rip off of anything I’ve ever had. It tasted like it had been left to boil for 24 hours. The flesh was so rough and almost inedible with a horrible flavour. I forgot to mention the ‘speciality’ lobster did not have a price on the board when we ordered, presumably because it is chosen by weight.. At this point we were so disappointed we decided to cut our losses and get the bill. It came to $5,300 MXN, circa $270. This was with the pork main course already knocked off and only drinking a beer each. The lobster was $2,500 MXN!!! 125 USD.. Probably the most expensive course I’ve ever had and also certainly the worst. A terrible experience and we won’t be recommending to any friends.More
