About
Inspiration for Primo comes from the love for food, ancient spirits, local crafts and rustic cooking. Trying to recreate in a small space under a beautiful tree the essence from original Playa del Carmen and bring an authentic Mexican food where everything is cooked with wood fired oven, comales and grill as has been done traditionally in most small towns of the country for centuries. Primo means cousin in Spanish. As a common slogan in Mexico we say Primo to refer to really close friends, the ones that may be closer than family. Our intention with this name for the restaurant is that guests feel the confort of gathering in a place that will taste and feel like home as we see. We have developed

My wife and I were in Playa for three weeks and whenever we are traveling we have a rule. We only eat in a restaurant once on a trip. This forces us to go out and find new great places to eat. Well........We simply had...to make an exception this time. On our last night out in Playa we wanted to do do something really special and, as hard as we tried, we couldn't come up with anything that was likely to be more special than Primo. Luckily we were able to get in. (I think Charlie remembered us and squeezed us in) This is THE place to go in Playa if you want real Mexican food made from only the finest ingredients and served by some of the nicest people imaginable. The setting is similar to an upscale street corner taco stand but DO NOT BE FOOLED by that. This is no taco stand, my friends. This is world class food that is on par with anything you will find at a Michelin Star restaurant, just without all the foo foo and pretense. Each night we ordered 6 dishes and had them served two at a time. (three courses) We didn't need to order this much food, and in fact we never did finish it all, but we wanted to taste everything and simply couldn't decide. There were so many things we have never seen or even heard of before. And I have lived 20 minutes from the Mexican border for the past 40 years. The head waiter is Charlie. Just ask for him and let him guide you. The menu each day features specials that are based on what is fresh and fantastic that day. We loved everything Charlie suggested as well as his incredible sense of humor. A truly nice guy! The chefs at this place are magicians. The flavors, textures and presentations they come up with are amazing. How can they do it in such a small, open air kitchen? Part of that answer is the pit that is below the kitchen floor were they roast meets for up to 14 hours before serving. Awesome! If you miss out on going to Primos, you are missing out on the best of Playa Del Carmen.More

My fist visit was December 2020 and I just knew I had to go back. The drinks are just so darn creative and delicious. The smoked margarita and the house margarita made with mezcal were my favorites, but I liked everything we ordered. The grilled...cauliflower with hummus, the shrimp, and the short ribs were all fabulous. And the guacamole and fried tortillas were a great start to dinner. I love going to Playa and I go to eat! This is one of my new favorites! Remember this is a small intimate outdoor restaurant so if you really want to eat here, MAKE RESERVATIONS! The tables fill up quickly. If you have to wait it’s worth it!More

Fabulous experience! Jimmy and Charlie were excellent hosts and so fun & attentive. The food was divine. Primo is home to the best guac, the tenderest & tastiest short rib I’ve ever eaten (comes with a gravy/broth that I wish I could enjoy everyday for...the rest of my life), and the most scrumptious desserts. It’s also such a cool scene... we felt like locals in this restaurant since it’s off the beaten path (no 5th Avenue craziness). After our meal the chef called a taxi for us which was so nice of him. Next time we visit Playa we will definitely make sure to dine at least twice at Primo.More

The pork is truly unreal! I had the pork tacos, with cabbage and the ginger habanero sauce and oh WOW! They truly melt in your mouth. My husband had the ribs and he still is talking about them. We have never had better of either....The wine they paired with it made it perfect. Then we did get to have cake and eat it to! The chocolate cake with salted Carmel ice cream completed perfection. Plus the service was awesome. They were helpful and explained the menu. If your looking for a flavorful meal that is local, definitely eat here. You will not be disappointed!More

No trip to Playa Del Carmen is complete without a trip to Primo. Its located right off a main road. The ambiance is amazing(especially at night). Dinner by candle light, with soft lighting overhead. The customer service is spectacular. And the Margaritas are some of...the best in Playa. And the Guacamole....The Guacamole is the best in Playa. Please make sure you have dinner here before leaving Playa. You won't regret it.More

Excellent. I am a very discerning eater. I work in hospitality and food is the thing I geek out on. I have been to Playa del Carmen before and this is the best restaurant I have eaten at hands down. Tables are outside with outside...open kitchen. Things cooked over an open flame. The pork belly was amazing- rendered to perfection. Better then any of the 5 star hotels I have eaten in the area. Must visit.More

Overpriced and average tasting meal. Tostadas we’re stale, fish was not cleaned properly. Overall disappointed.
