We fell in love immediately with the owner/chef, Estelle, who treated us as family and served up tasty Oaxaca specialties with lots of mole. We ate here twice and recommend it highly --- conveniently located near the Plaza Santa Dominicana and the little Casa de Juarez

We had great food pretty much everywhere in Oaxaca, but El Escapulario is in another category all together. As an admitted foodie and devoted cook, divine home cooking is my high water mark. This place fits the bill. Don't let the no frills description put you off, the room is immaculate and charming, set on the second floor overlooking the... More

What a fabulous comida, around the corner from the Santo Domingo. The molé negro was the best we've ever eaten, the chilé rellenos delicate and flavorful. Priceless, but also remarkably inexpensive. A small, upstairs restaurant with a talented and gracious owner. We felt like we were friends from afar, treated to the best meal of our journey. A very true,... More

This is an excellent no frills restaurant. The basics are covered and the food is excellent. Had a soup with Huitlecoche (questionable spelling). We would call it corn smut but generally is referred to as "Mexican Truffles" and is a Mexican delicacy. For sure it was delicious. My wife had stuffed chilies which were not deep fried but rather seemed... More

We have eaten here for three meals in the past two days and after a month here in Oaxaca eating everywhere, this is THE spot. It took us two weeks before we noticed it tucked away above the store where we usually go to get an ice cream. We saw the menu out front on the stand and the staircase,... More

A visitor to Oaxaca is fortunate to have many wonderful restaurants to choose from. A favorite of ours is El Escapulario. I've enjoyed the Chilaquiles there, probably the best I've had in town, and recently had a delicious dish for lunch, chicken with a green pumpkin seed sauce that was superb. Prices are very reasonable, service is good and the... More

This is a small place, with more of a fondita charm than a big restaurant, personally taken care by what I assume is the owner and probably chef who was gentle and friendly. Ordered chile rellenos in orange sauce, tasajo and mole negro and everything was delicious. A place to go and eat good Oaxacan food without spending a fortune... More

We came here for a tradicional breakfast. The food was amazing, everything had a unique flavor thanks to the species of the area. The moles were outstanding, as well as fried beans, and the fresh cheese. Everything is done on the minute, so it takes some time, but it is definitely worth it.

My wife and I had been waiting to try mole here in Oaxaca and this was our first experience with it. I had the mole negro and she the mole rojo. They were both fantastic, incredibly rich and flavourful. The negro focuses on deep rich chocolatey flavours while the rojo was almost like a very rich curry. It is a... More
