We rank this #2 of the three restaurants we tried for traditional Mexican cuisine. It is very nearly tied with Casa Tradicional (delightful and delicious) and quite a bit better than the well-known El Arrayan (3 stars). It is out of the tourist area, and so gets less of the crowd, but discerning diners seek it out.

Have already been twice this season. Must make reservations & cash only. Excellent food. One of the best meals we have had in Puerto Vallarta and the staff is always friendly. Everything on the menu is worth a try, especially the Carafe of Cheap Red Wine! Unique décor so take your camera

We have been coming here for 22 out of the 23 years it has been opened. The host is always very friendly, remembers us for years' past, as do some of the waiters. The food - from Frieda's wedding is unsurpassed in PV and Mexico! We have a tradition of going here on Valentine's Day, and another during our stay... More

Our cab driver could not find the restaurant and had to ask several groups of people on the street where to go. Definitely off the beaten path. But worth the time and effort to get there. If you are looking for an authentically Mexican dining experience with great service and a truly delightful ambiance, this is the place to go.... More

We were in Puerto Vallarta for 5 weeks and went to the Red Cabbage 5 times - testament to how great the food is. The place is cosy, very clean and attractive although enjoyably off the beaten track. Open from 5 pm nightly, reservations are a must! Being Celiac, I was very concerned about gluten free options. They provided me... More

We found the Red Cabbage to be delightful and delicious. We were staying at the Hyatt Ziva, and cabbed it to the restaurant quickly. The adorable little doorman let us in the gate (we feel quite sure in 10-15 years he will be running the place), and it was charming with lots of Frida Kahlo portraits and character. We were... Truly my best meal in PV after 4 months of living here. This is an extraordinary restaurant. I was so grateful it is not in the raucous drunken hub of the romantic zone and found the ten minute walk from NOISE to be an immersion into Mexico. I leave soon and am determined to get back before departing!

Several years ago we were disappointed in this restaurant. We decided to give it another chance as friends had had a good experience 2 weeks ago. We were 4 people with a reservation. We arrived to a locked gate that the waiter has to open. Our table was ready and we were seated and greeted promptly. From that point, the... More

Colorful art covering the walls... a menu of dishes served by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera... an off-the-tourist-path location in a quiet residential neighborhood across from the Rio Cuale... great food... and KILLER margaritas. I walked here after wandering around in the Zona Romantica and it was only about ten minutes. Then an easy cab ride back to the center... More
