Turtles Deli On the West End

Turtles Deli is a tucked away restaurant with great food and an awesome view. They make their own bread 🍞 🥖 and their sandwiches are ALL delicious and BIG! My favorite is the Curry Chicken Salad sandwich on Sour Dough bread. For this visit I decided to try for the very first time a garden salad with 1/2 a Curry Chicken sandwich. Again delicious! My husband loves the Pastrami Club on marbled rye with mayo and a side pickle. You go to the counter, order your food, pick your drink - soda, juice, bear or wine. You pick up and pay when your name is called. The seating area has a covered area with tables or a couple picnic tables in the sand, shaded with a few trees. The view is beautiful, picturesque and tranquil with a light,steady breeze. They have a unisex bathroom with 2 stalls and books to read while you wait (if you’re interested).

I think these are the largest sandwiches I've ever seen.

We were looking for something quick, that we could take back to our cottage and enjoy while sitting on the beach. I had read that the sandwiches are large, so I ordered one to split between the 2 of us. The sandwich was huge. I think it could have been split 3 ways. Had we not just been diving and were super hungry, I'm sure we wouldn't have been able to eat the whole thing. Oh, and it was delicious. I highly recommend stopping in and picking up a sandwich, to take on a picnic at the beach.

Wonderful Local Lunch Spot

We had read about Turtle’s Deli and had a chance to try it yesterday. It’s a bit set back from the road just beyond the impressive Fred resort. What a wonderful lunch we had sitting in a shady area outdoors right by the water with a beautiful view. We ordered a pastrami Reuben and a salad to share. You choose drinks from a cooler and everything is cash. The sandwich was huge with lots of lean meat, cheese, sauerkraut etc. and it was delicious! You choose a small bag of chips to go with your sandwich. Think the bread was homemade too. The salad was also a good size and made fresh. We both smiled as we were given a piece of paper as our ‘second plate’ as we were sharing, but we did use it as the sandwich was overflowing. We are so glad we found this local treasure and will definitely return for another lunch before we head home.

This review is a bit of a comparison from what It was to what it is. The actual space is now more arranged and organized so good job here. That doesn’t mean it is now more organized and service is better. I ordered my food ahead of time and was told it would be ready in 20 -25 minutes, and I believe it was. The problem was that it took me 20-25 minutes after arriving just to pay for my order. The cashier seem to have multiple duties or maybe there was a communication problem but she kept running out with a receipt and coming back and saying sorry. There were only 3 people ahead of me so that shouldn’t have been an issue. Staffing may be an issue here. Then as far as the food, so far it’s not as good. This is just the first item in comparison but the portion was smaller it was nothing special compared to the previous owner. I will be back because one visit doesn’t tell it all so, to be continued....

Perfect Hole-In-The-Wall Eat Place!

I've been going to Turtle's at least once a week for the better part of three years. Everything on the menu is fantastic! My top two favorites would be the cornbeef rueben and the one they call "The Beast." Their menu is an assortment of hot or cold sandwiches placed on their fresh home-made bread. The owners/staff are always welcoming and make you feel at home. The only thing I'd fail to mention is the unbelievable view! The Deli sits on the western coast of St. Croix, right on the beach. The combination of incredible sandwiches with a ocean front view is immeasurable. It's the first place I take "newbies" to the island. 5/5 recommend.

Great veggie sandwich + mac + new smoked brisket

Great new partnership between Turtles and the smoked bbq place, hit the spot after snorkeling the pier. I'm a mostly veggie person, and enjoyed their veggie sandwich that included tasty portobellos and pesto, something I never would have thought to combine myself but now will! My husband enjoyed the beef brisket sandwich, and we both got sides of smokin mac which was amazing (probably has meat in it so may not be for pure vegetarians). Had a great selection, can't wait to try some other items next visit!

Nice little sandwich shop

We wanted to just grab some sandwiches and this spot did not disappoint. There were many options and you could also create your own. I had honey turkey on the marbled rye. The sandwiches are huge and come with a small bag of chips. You could also purchase bottles of beer, wine, water, soda and juices. Listen out for when they call your name. We didn’t hear them and waited longer than we should have. Also, they only take cash!

The BEST sandwiches on the island!

You order your sandwich and buy your drink at a enclosed building, then walk out towards the beach to the picnic tables to await your order being called. Overall it is pretty quick and when you unwrap your choice of sandwiches you will be thrilled! We had the rueben which comes on marbled rye and a chicken sandwich which came on a "hoagie" bun. Both were delicious and much too large to finish at one setting. We had brought a small cooler bag and used that to transport the leftovers home for a snack! The taste of the rueben was fantastic and the wife bragged about the chicken, so it had to have been good as well. Needless to say, the best sandwiches on the island were at Turtle's Deli!

Great vegetarian options, yummy homemade bread!!

My husband and I loved this place! The vegetarian hot sandwich we had with mushrooms and coleslaw was so delicious (fresh baked bread made from scratch!). We stayed at The Fred which is right next door and was an easy walk. The sandwiches are huge so a half sandwich and half salad was more than enough for a meal. Wish they were open on weekends!

Best sandwiches anywhere!!

This is my second review of Turtles because after 2 years of living on stx they are still the best sandwich I've ever had. Such an amazing mom and pop deli! If they were anywhere stateside they would easily get double for their sandwiches. My husband and I are big eaters and can easily share a sandwich and be stuffed. Pastrami club, Italian hero, raven and beast are my favorites but bo matter what you pick on the menu you will be blown away!!! Fresh ingredients and huge portions.

Quality lacking

We went for BBQ and were very disappointed. Brisket was not available so I tried the pulled chicken sandwich. It was unflavored, no taste, overcooked, and dry. Even drowning it in the watery BBQ sauce couldn't help. My wife had a BLT and the bacon was not even cooked and the tomato was green. We showed the kitchen staff and they just shrugged and said sorry. We threw it all away. Never going back.

Surprisingly terrible

We love here in St Croix and visit Turtles from time to time. On this particular visit the order was for take-out. This can be risky because by the time you open your package you may be miles away. ( check it before you leave) I need to take my own advice, because I ordered a BLT and at $15.00 it should be awesome, but you guessed it, it wasn’t. It was by far the worst sandwich I have ever had at Turtles and rates in the top 5 Worst I have ever had anywhere. The bread was stale, stiff, and falling apart, the bacon was chewy and tasteless, the lettuce and tomato were ok but not enough was provided. The best part f the meal was the bag of chips. My advice is to never, ever choose this sandwich but if you do open the wrapper and take a bite before you leave. Please order something else I wasted the 15.

Great Lunch Spot

We searched for the Turtle’s Deli and found a new owner and it’s now called Smoke n Turtles. It opened four days ago. Menu is the same but the ordering place is in one building and you pick up sandwiches from another building. We ordered a salad and three sandwiches. Everything was wonderful! Breads are homemade and the sandwiches are very creative, though you can have whatever you want. Prices are reasonable and you sit on nice picnic tables overlooking the water. It’s a beautiful spot. The new owner will happily tell you about the history of the place and his ideas. He was super friendly and we wish him luck. So try this great lunch spot when in the area!

Toast/Smoke review. Good food

My husband and I had lunch here after diving. You order at the same spot for both restaurants so we got a sample of things. We each got sammies from Toast that were really good. The curry chicken salad was really good, like my chicken more shredded than in huge hunks, but still tasted good. Portion is huge. It said it was on marbled wheat bread, but it was rye, which I hate, but it was still good. We had cornbread and smoked mac and cheese from Smoke. Both really good. One pop. $38 tab, very reasonable.

Turtle's Deli is nestled right on the beach. The service was excellent and honestly the sandwiches are even better! The amount of meat you get on them is alot. If you finish all of your sandwich you are a beast cause they are sooooooo big. Staff there were so nice!
