Miramar's Hidden Gem

If you are in the Miramar area of San Juan don't miss this restaurant. We were greeted warmly on a rainy night, they checked temperatures, and sat us outside under the veranda. Service was absolutely outstanding, cocktails were strong and delicious, the fish was fresh and beautifully prepared, the apps, salads, desserts - all tasty, professionally presented, artistically decorated, and perfect temperature. They practiced true social distancing which we appreciated. We splurged a bit but glad we did - it was the best meal we had in Puerto Rico, both romantic and local. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

Great steak but inedibly salty sauce

Took a group of 14 to dinner. Several ordered the steak at poivre. Meat was very good. The sauce was so salty that everyone had to scrape it off the steak to eat it. Restaurant offered to “fix” it but didn’t want to said another 20 minutes for 6 more steaks. The chicken was fantastic! Those that had salmon said it was fine but the gnocchi that came with it was cold. The person that substituted risotto was much happier.

I visited Rate 125 with my business partner on June 2021. The first thing I noticed is that Rare 125 is kind of hidden, no sign and even with apple maps I was not able to find it. Thats ok by me because, the less people inside the better. Once inside i looked at the decor and loved it. It is really cool, our waitress was awesome and all around the service was top notch. We started with the tuna tartars with malanga chips and it was heavenly, I really enjoyed it. We both ordered ribeye, I order mine medium rare and my partner asked for his steak to be cooked medium well (please forgive him). The steaks came and I noticed that my steak was medium not medium rare but I didn’t want To send it vack because it looked amazing, and once I tried the meat I was in love with it. It was a generous portion and I ate it all. Our sides were mashed potatoes and mac and cheese with truffle oil (Yeah I like truffle oil, please forgive me) and it was so good that i almost licked the plate). I tasted the mashed potatoes and they were silky and very smooth but they lacked a little salt (my partner did not mjnd). I strongly urge you to give Rare 125 because if you don’t like it you will definitely Rare in my book

Disappointed

I have been to Rare many times as it is one of my favorite restaurants in San Juan. This time however, was not a good experience. My husband, son and myself went for a nice Saturday evening dinner. From the moment we were seated, the waitress was very inattentive. She spent a lot of time at a table near us and very little at ours. The food order took much longer than it ever had in the past. My son ordered the hamburger and macaroni and cheese. These items were the best food we had. I ordered the duck ravioli which was super salty and not good at all. My husband ordered the filet and risotto. The filet was average, not a usual for Rare. The risotto was so salty we couldn't even eat it. We waited a while again for our check and when we told the waitress that the meal was very salty she seemed to not care and said she would "mention it to the supervisor." No appolgies just a flippant attitude which is unlike our experiences with this restaurant in the past. I don't know what is happening, if the staff is not working well together or the kitchen is understaffed. Either way, it was an expensive disappointment and we most likely won't go back again for a while.

Multiple issues with the food and plates throughout the dining.

We went there as a family dinner late at night and being not the first time which we frequented, hoped to enjoy a good meal, as they always have complied with. Nevertheless, there were some crucial flaws with the food that were not acceptable. For instance, the appetizers took a long time to arrive, one being a soup which are usually already prepared. During the entrée course, a side dish arrived cold, the meats ordered were both not evenly cooked and had the wrong desired cook term, as well as wrong portions and wrong meat cuts. The dessert arrived frozen. To compensate, they gave the dessert on the house, but automatically charged a high service tip to a high bill, to which we had to recharge the bill and provide no tip whatsoever. Although the waiter service was good, as it always is, the food service went severely downhill, making one question himself if the trip was anyway at all worth it.

Service was acceptable. But not superior. The issue was with the meal. The steaks were tough, & flavorless, charred on the outside, and had to be sawed, not cut. The Mac&Cheese, vegetables, and sautéed mushrooms, were also disappointing. Just bland. We tried several of the "exclusive" drinks, including the "Smoky Smoke". Very average, and extremely over priced. My "Smoky Smoke" contained what seemed like a sip of liquid amongst a 4oz. Ice cube. The exceptions to my review were, the Scallop appetizer, although it was 4 modest scallops, and just slightly overcooked, were very fresh and tasty. The other was a chocolate martini with desert. Also fresh and flavorful. Appetizer, Dinner, drinks, and a shared desert for 3, was just over $255. I would not consider the estimated range of $15-45 accurate.

Perfect steak dinner

Last night was our first time there and it was so good that we’re already planning when to go back. The food was delicious and our waiter Joseph was incredibly nice and professional. We shared a 24oz rib eye accompanied by truffle mac and cheese and charred asparagus. Joseph recommended it as a good dinner for 2 and it definitely hit the spot!

Worst anniversary dinner

Read all the good reviews and wow there they wrong. Had the worst price of filet I have ever tried. I did not take more than one bite and asked the waitress to take it away did not want to taste anymore the lobster tail as well was way over cooked. My husband reluctantly ate his as he knew we had to pay for our meal either way. We are very much steak eaters and this was one of the worst be have had l. Only good thing was our waitress who was kind.

Everything was terrible. Food presentation was not good. The meat was unflavored and it came in the incorrect term. The service was also bad, the server never refilled our water glasses, almost trowed the plates on the table and never came to the table to ask if everything was ok with the food after bringing it. We had to stand up to look for him in order to be able to tell him. I love meat and love meat restaurants, and there are definitely better places to go at Puerto Rico. I’m not going back there.

We visited Rare 125 on the recommendation of the host for our Airbnb. The service was extremely slow. We were seated quite some time before being acknowledged by our server. There was only one other table occupied by two people when we were there. The waitress was up in the bar area texting most of the time. Once we finally ordered our food came very quick. We were amazed by how fast it was until we realized why. Our medium steaks came out rare. Like dripping blood rare. She took the entire plates back to recook them and mine came back without the fries. So we had to wait for those again. After that we weren’t checked on the entire time. Our drinks were never refilled. The service was horrible. I will say that the food was very good once it came back to the table the second time.

Food was excellent! We both had the filet, shared the filet empanadas, tuna tartare, and beef dumplings (my favorite). Found this place last minute on our trip and don’t regret coming here. The cockatiels were excellent too- expensive- but yummy. Highly recommend!

Worth a visit

Very nice quiet place and good service. I love stouts but wasn't crazy about the Ocean Lab Stout (local brewery) only because it tasted like it had nitro in it. Other than that, the yuca fries were very good, less spicy than I expected. The beef mac n cheese was AMAZING!

Good Service, Good Appetizer, Fair Meat

Waiter service was "top" as well as a super wide wine selection. Appetizers and food presentation were very good. Aged sirloin was served really cold. Filet mignon was also served cold. Candidly we let then know. Sad for steakhouse. Must improve timing of food delivery. On the other hand 20% automatic tip must be an option for the customer ever for a small family of 5.

Favorite Spot in San Juan

I absolutely love this place. If you're just visiting or live here, you can't miss with Rare 125. Especially if you're looking for a local, non-corporate, steak experience. I love the bone-in ribeye with the truffle mac & cheese. This is the only place I know of in San Juan that actually has an Old Fashioned menu. If that's your drink and you like steak, this is your place. My kids love coming here as well. Great restaurant.

Pleasant surprise

Loved this quaint restaurant, food was amazing as well as creative. Wine list was good. Although the restaurant is small, we had no problem carrying on our business conversation and atmosphere worked well for our meeting. We also had a service dog they allowed which we appreciated!
