Chef José Santaella has trained with some of the best chefs in the world, including Ferrán Adriá, Eric Ripert, and Gary Danko. His apprenticeships and successful catering career paved the way for Santaella, his signature restaurant in Santurce's La Placita Marketplace. The decor is rustic yet elegant, with exposed walls, Edison light fixtures, an interior garden, and a sparkling bar. Chef Santaella fuses local and international ingredients to perfectly execute Puerto Rican nouvelle cuisine. The menu is dominated by tapas, which you can easily make into a meal. Favorites include the ahi tuna skewers, goat cheese quesadilla, 'alcapurrias' topped with crab, and foie gras terrine with fruit jelly . Perfectly paced dinner for 8... we were seated right away after arriving 15 minutes early for our 8 PM reservation. Drink orders were taken, and it was worth trying different cocktails, all were inventive and delicious, incorporating Caribbean fruits and flavors. First course orders were next, and these arrived a bit afterwards. They showcase traditional Puerto Rican food with a modern twist. Main course orders were not taken until the first course had arrived. We enjoyed the 3 hours at the restaurant and never felt rushed (or hungry). We had time to savor our drinks and dinner, as one should. Mostly a smartly dressed crowd, of all ages, a mix of locals and tourists. The dining room is beautiful with traditional and modern touches. Background music was well chosen, lively but not crazy loud... decibel level was high, as it was, but we were able to chat, and it all contributed to the festive atmosphere. Overall, we had a wonderful evening. Kudos.

Appetizers, cold appetizers and main dishes were excellent. However, beware of some waiters that want to impose themselves an automatic 22% gratitude of an all ready expensive dinner. There are other restaurants — that do the same quality dish in Puerto Rico— which charge $28 instead of $50 for the same exact dish.
In summary: they need to work on balancing real prices, managing greedy waiters, and desserts

I say hidden gem because you walk up to an unassuming building and the door opens up to a stunning restaurant. I found Santaella to be exceptional, from the meal to the cocktails to the service, everything was on point. The goat cheese quesadilla appetizer I am pretty sure I will dream about for the rest of my days, and probably try and recreate with mediocre ability ha. We also had the escargot, caesar salad, and a garlic shrimp dish with trifungo... which was heavenly. It is pricey, but we expected that and felt like the entire experience was worth what we paid. Sit down, order a great cocktail, and just soak in the cool vibe.

The stars are only for the great atmosphere inside the restaurant and the polite service. But..
1. For entering this restaurant we must accepted by the man at the door! Although we had an online reservation. And every time my friend goes out for a cigar, he kept asking if he had a reservation 😂
2. For ordering they gave as the menu in Spanish, (although we were obviously tourists as we spoke in English) and then told us that we could scan a code for the English menu (although there was no WiFi in the restaurant!)
3. Food was below average, if you want carribean/puertorican cuisine, go somewhere else. Some of the dishes we ordered, they came back and told us that were sold out. At the end they brought as a bill from another table 😂 (of course they apologised).
4. Also be ware! In the final bill although there is a 20% service included, they ask you for additional tip!
Our total experience didn’t worth the money.

I am so glad my friend recommended we try this restaurant because it was such an amazing experience. First and foremost, I highly recommend you make reservations because you won't get in unless you have them. I have driven this are many times and have not noticed this place at all. The restaurant from the outside is very unassuming but once you get in it's a whole different vibe. The lighting is perfect to evoke a really cool vibe. From what I saw they had a main dining area, bar area and small dining area just off of the bar. We were seated in the small area just off the bar. The service was impeccable; someone was always checking up on us but not in an intrusive way.
For starters we had the Frituras de malanga which are root fritters topped with smoked turkey and chicken. Oh, they were so good, the fritter was very risp and the topping just took it over the edge. In addition, we also ordered the Calamares Fritos (Fried Calamari) which were served in a spicy oriental sauce. These are not your traditional fried calamari, no breading at all. We enjoyed he calamari. For our entrees we had the Lacon Asado which is a braised pork shank served with potato salad. I substituted a mix veggie plate instead of the potato salad and these veggies were delicious. It was a mix of broccoli, asparagus, mushroom and carrots; it was really good. We also had the pork belly special which came with a pure or root vegetables. The pork belly was perfectly seasoned and cooked, it had a nice crunch to it as well. My girlfriend ordered the Terrina De Foie Gras and she totally loved it; it was served with a jam over toast. What an amazing meal and we even left some room for dessert-we had the Baked Alaska, which was vanilla ice cream, raspberry sorbet cake, flambeed meringue. The dessert was so good! If you are in the area, I highly suggest you visit and eat here. Last reason to dine at this place-after dinner you can visit the Placita on the weekend because it is normally lots of fun.

I never write reviews, but I can’t not write a review about Santaella. My family lives life around food— it’s how we celebrate, get to know a place, come together and spend time. Rarely do we have experiences this perfect. The food was an amazing introduction to Puerto Rico— sophisticated yet approachable — and the service rivaled it. We loved every dish and person that came to our table, but we do have to give a special shout out to Rafael who has a true gift for making experiences and people feel extra special. Here is to hoping the rest of our vacation is as spectacular as Santaella.

We went here for a milestone birthday, hoping for an authentic but upscale dining experience. The staff were attentive, and we did try a few different things on the menu; however, nothing really stood out to us as memorable. The vibe is somewhat hip, not particularly quiet but also not overly loud. We used the valet parking and were glad we did, because we weren't sure where we'd park otherwise.

The ambiance and food at Santaella is second too none! The interior of the restaurant had a urban hip vibe which was fabulous and the fish tacos and sliders were unbelievable.! Our server offered us water which I accepted. My partner is not a water drinker but the server just poured it into a small glass without asking. I asked for regular water, assuming it was tap water. When our check came there was a charge of $24.00 for 3 bottles of water.! I was somewhat confused by this as the server poured from one glass bottle of water. He informed us that it is a "one bottle of water per person" policy, and that is was filtered water. He actually poured us just one bottle which was the equivalent of two small glasses. When I questioned the charge, he said he would take one bottle off the check ! I accepted this but on reflection I was very upset to be charged $16 for two small glasses of water with one that I never asked for! It would of been $24 if I hadn't of questioned him! I wish it had been a better experience as otherwise everything else about this restaurant is phenomenal! Remember to check your bill at the end of your meal .

The reservation experience took a bit because it's over the internet through an app and you must leave a credit card on file to make the reservation 😳. They give you 15 minutes of grace to get to the restaurant and you must cancel or else? I didn't find out what happens, because we got there on time. The place was packed full all night for the 2.5 hours we were there. The service was excellent, great selection of cocktails and wines. Out of three apperitives that we ordered one was excellent, one salty and one... let's just say it was not exactly as the menu said it brought two out of the 3 ingredients 😬. In my experience, a bit over priced for what it was...

If a restaurant is packed to the walls on a Monday night with walk-ins waiting for tables at 9:30pm, you know its good!
This was not only one of the best meals we had in PR, but one of the best in general.
Chef Santaella's fusion of Puerto Rican food with French technique is other worldly. Highly recommend. Make a reservation!

My husband and I booked our reservations a bit late though able to reserved seats at the bar. BEST place to sit. Best of both worlds. The bartenders are true scientists making these fabulous looking cocktails which taste heavenly ✨ Their customer service is five star. They served us drinks and dinner. The food was divine. Santaella could be Michelin Star. One of the best restaurants we have dined in, we are avid travelers and big foodies.

On our two week vacation on the island, we visited again, after six and a half years (my previous visit to PR). The place is always packed and reservations are highly recommended. Jose Santaella, the owner and chef, does not cut corners and the most important thing for him is quality.
Staff is professional, and helpful. We had a lot of food and everything was superb and well presented.
I had the "chillo frito", red snapper w plantains. Divine. My husband had the churrasco. Cooked to perfection. Everything ordered in our group was excellent.
Do not forget dessert, especially the nutella sandwich, to die for and the Baked Alaska. Treat yourself to a exceptional gastronomic experience. Highly recommended..

Definitely need a reservation for this culinary treat. We had the ceviche, arugula salad and sea bass. Each dish was perfectly prepared and large enough to share. For my wife’s birthday we had the Baked Alaskan which came out flaming as the waiters sang a spirited happy birthday. Truly great.

HORRIBLE Experience. The food was disgusting and was way too expensive. I would never recommend this place to anyone I know. The staff were also extremely rude to me and my partner. If you are looking for good food and a good atmosphere, skip this horrible place and go somewhere else.

We got a reservation at the bar for two people. We were greeted immediately by the bar tender who provided great recommendations based on what we liked. Had a house old fashioned which was delicious. We also ordered the octopus, tuna skewers, and pork shank, everything was prepared perfectly and had excellent and unique flavors. Service was great through the whole experience. We ended the meal with the flan which was the proverbial icing on the cake! Highly recommended!!
