About
Chef José Santaella has trained with some of the best chefs in the world, including Ferrán Adriá, Eric Ripert, and Gary Danko. His apprenticeships and successful catering career paved the way for Santaella, his signature restaurant in Santurce's La Placita Marketplace. The decor is rustic yet elegant, with exposed walls, Edison light fixtures, an interior garden, and a sparkling bar. Chef Santaella fuses local and international ingredients to perfectly execute Puerto Rican nouvelle cuisine. The menu is dominated by tapas, which you can easily make into a meal. Favorites include the ahi tuna skewers, goat cheese quesadilla, 'alcapurrias' topped with crab, and foie gras terrine with fruit jelly

If a restaurant is packed to the walls on a Monday night with walk-ins waiting for tables at 9:30pm, you know its good! This was not only one of the best meals we had in PR, but one of the best in general. Chef Santaella's...fusion of Puerto Rican food with French technique is other worldly. Highly recommend. Make a reservation!More

We had two wonderful meals here during our stay. The food is absolutely delicious and lovely, chilled pambiance. It gets busy after about 5 pm and I’d strongly recommend making a reservation if possible. That said, they accommodated our party of 4 without a reservation...which was really appreciated. We had a variety of food - all dishes were fantastic. Sea Bass was amazing. Steamed Shrimp buns, Crazy Asian salad, Pork shank - great. Overall wonderful experiences and we will certainly return.More

Santaella is one of my favorite places in Puerto Rico. The food is always excellent. High quality, fresh & delicious. It’s not your average, every day restaurant. The menu is smart, well-thought out and original. You’ll want to try a lot! Besides the food being...great, I love the ambiance. Dimly lit, warm, inviting and beautiful. The drinks are also delicious. An extensive menu with a variety of cocktails to choose from. Very strong! Service here is always exceptional. The staff are welcoming and very knowledgeable about the cuisine and menu items. It is a bit pricey but to me very worth it. Enjoy Santaella!More

We went here for a milestone birthday, hoping for an authentic but upscale dining experience. The staff were attentive, and we did try a few different things on the menu; however, nothing really stood out to us as memorable. The vibe is somewhat hip, not...particularly quiet but also not overly loud. We used the valet parking and were glad we did, because we weren't sure where we'd park otherwise.More

This was the first meal we had in San Juan on our vacation and nothing came equal. Everything from the cocktails to the Baked Alaska for dessert was outstanding. Service was attentive and not overbearing. The starters were impressive, especially the sweetbreads and the asian-inspired...salad. We ended up with only two main courses, the whole fried snapper and the skirt steak, both were outstanding.More

Perfectly paced dinner for 8... we were seated right away after arriving 15 minutes early for our 8 PM reservation. Drink orders were taken, and it was worth trying different cocktails, all were inventive and delicious, incorporating Caribbean fruits and flavors. First course orders were...next, and these arrived a bit afterwards. They showcase traditional Puerto Rican food with a modern twist. Main course orders were not taken until the first course had arrived. We enjoyed the 3 hours at the restaurant and never felt rushed (or hungry). We had time to savor our drinks and dinner, as one should. Mostly a smartly dressed crowd, of all ages, a mix of locals and tourists. The dining room is beautiful with traditional and modern touches. Background music was well chosen, lively but not crazy loud... decibel level was high, as it was, but we were able to chat, and it all contributed to the festive atmosphere. Overall, we had a wonderful evening. Kudos.More

We had a super delicious meal here right before the holidays. The holiday decor, Christmas music and ambience was all perfect. The service was excellent too. We tried 8 different small dishes and all were outstanding! Highlights were goat cheese quesadilla and curry popcorn chicken....The drinks were delicious too, esp the Tamarind Margarita. YUM!! Highly recommend this place!!More

I would say not expensive is you come from the USA but can get pricy for locals. Average high ... 18 to 35. On the other hand cóctails are around 15 per cóctails.
