We arrived to find a small restaurant hidden away in the jungle atmosphere. A very eclectic mix of artifacts and a very lovable easy going owner/cook. A very unique experience highlighted with an exquisite meal. I ordered the smoked salmon, the wife the shrimp. The plating was so intricate and design showed both talent and skill. The salmon dish was presented with a glass covered top where smoke was captured and wafted out when lifted in front of me. The meal was excellent and Thomas was such a lovable friendly fellow.. We will surely miss him. If we ever travel back to Peurto Plata we will definitely be back for a meal.

Simply the best there is.

Thomas the owner of the business is also the host, waiter, will clean your table and most importantly has got to be one of the best chefs I have ever met. He on top of all that is a great person as I almost always sit and talk with him after my dinner. You have to make reservations because he only uses the freshest products and he has to know how many he is cooking for.

A Must Visit If In The Area

We visited here while on vacation as a group of 4, we made reservations ahead of time which is a must because the owner Tomas is the chef , waiter, server etc, this is what separates his restaurant from others, we loved the personal touch. As we entered the restaurant we were greeted by Tomas who gave us a short history of his place and Elvis music was playing softly in the background. We started with drinks, the beer was a German beer and it was cold and quite good, the Pina Colada’s were made in a large cored-out fresh pineapple and this was delicious ( best I ever had), the meals were cooked to perfection and the presentation was superb. There is no way you are going to leave here still hungry as the portions are huge and great prices, to add to the personal touch, the ladies in our party were given bouquets of freshly cut flowers as we were leaving, what a great touch, this is a must stop if visiting the area, we will most definitely be returning, thanks again Tomas for such a wonderful evening

Outstanding, personalized dinner experience

Tonight, Tomas made dinner for my wife and me. It was our 15th anniversary and he delivered outstanding, hospitable, personal service and a truly memorable dining experience. As so many of the other reviews have said, he is an absolutely marvelous host, and the quality and quantity of the food he provides is without rival. Tonight's meal was the best I've had in a long time, and I finished (half of,) my meal tonight left with a feeling of contentment and delight that only comes from a belly that relished every savory, rich bite that filled it. I look forward to enjoying the other half of this delightful meal left over tomorrow-- absolutely what was left came with me... Tomas is your server, your chef, your sommelier, your bartender, your busboy, and your companion to discuss the day's events at the end of your meal, should you choose. His restaurant is small, intimate, and (unless you have a reservation,) possibly not open, unless he knows you're coming. His food will be fresh, and if you want something special, call the day before and he'll do his best to obtain it, even if he needs to pilot the lobster boat and catch your meal himself! Should you visit Puerto Plata, make time for a meal at Le Papillon. You won't be disappointed.

Incredible personalized experience!!

Tomas provided hands down the best dining experience I’ve ever had in my life! My daughters and I visited Le Papillon for a birthday celebration and Tomas went above and beyond to make it a night to remember. When we first walked in to the charming dining room, we were greeted with a lovely ambiance and gorgeous birthday decorations that Tomas had specially prepared for our evening. We started with his infamous Pina Coladas, each served in a hand cut pineapple - the most delicious and creamy Pina Colada ever! They were so good, we made sure to get refills. Next came our appetizer - delicious garlic bread, which was compliments of Tomas for her birthday. I ordered the filet mignon, and my daughters got the pineapple chicken and garlic shrimp. Each dish was divine. The meats were perfectly cooked and the sides were delicious and complimented the main dish exquisitely. Tomas had specially made dessert to celebrate our birthday dinner - individual Black Forest cakes, made with cherry liqueur imported from Germany. It was heaven!!! The most delicious and authentic Black Forest cake outside of Germany. This place is truly a hidden gem of Puerto Plata. If you are ever in the area, you must visit. Reservations a must!

The Best of the Best

This place is always incredible. Reservations are required 100% of the time so don’t even try to just show up. Come hungry and thirsty. It’s a small joint and the owner is the server and chef. He serves up some of the best food you will ever eat...ever!

Incredible experience

This is by far the best restaurant in Puerto Plata. Beginning with the wonderful open-air tropical garden setting, then the friendly greeting and attentive service from the "one-man show" Thomas. He's an amazing chef and anything you order will be cooked fresh. Be sure to try the filet, lobster,and any seafood on special when you visit. Portions are huge. You won't leave hungry. Remember, you MUST make a reservation!!

The best place to visit in Puerto plata!

First time going to the Dominican republic. I was recommended this place by a friend and let me tell you I wasn't disappointed at all Thomas the owner was an excellent host he is also the cook and the server. Me and my friend got the filet mignon, hands down the best I've ever had! He is an excellent cook! Overall my experience there was incredible and I would highly recommend anyone that is in the area to definitely stop by and try his amazing cooking! Thanks thomas! Stefano the greek.

Amazing

Liked the rustic interior and cozy feeling. We sat outside on the patio. Usually it bothers me, if the street is right beside my seat, but here it felt it simply belongs there; it's not a busy street though. The staff was so kind, explaining to us, that 'papillon' means a butterfly :). I'm forever grateful we decided to eat here, because before our visit I almost hated avocado. Well, that was until I ordered it here. The guacamole was so enchanting, I ordered one more. The cake on first sight nothing special tasted surprisingly delicious too. And the turquise sea is just around the corner.

Fantastic Birthday Dinner

Papillion is a very special, intimate restaurant with some of the best food we have ever eaten. Host and chef, Tomas, is superb as both. When we made reservations we mentioned that one member of our group had her birthday and we were greeted with a large banner and finished the meal with a 3 layer chocolate mousse cake. Somehow Tomas cooked 9 very different and all tastefully spiced meals for us. We would return to Cofresi just to eat at Papillion.

Ever since the first time in this restaurant two years ago we can’t have enough of it, excellent service, home welcome atmosphere. German European with some of course Caribbean accent food is absolutely amazing, every dish on the Manu is prepared to perfection. Perfect selection of German beer. There is always good time to have beer but diner always better to call ahead for reservations definitely worth it.!! Giving this place all the stars possible. !

Delicious meal!

We had the most delicious meal at le papillon! We had a filet mignon, cream corn and a baked potato. We also had shrimp cocktail and escargot as appetizers. The chef / owner was very friendly and obviously very talented. The most amazing meal we've had in th Dominican republic (in 8 months here)

Like Being in Chef's Home Kitchen!

Where to start... This place is amazing! My family of four visited the DR in December 2022/January 2023, and while we loved our time there, the food was a bit underwhelming... until we dined at Le Papillon. First off, we were early for our reservation (by about an hour!) but chef Thomas was so accommodating and kind. He immediately welcomed us in and took our orders. The restaurant is small and quaint. You feel as if you're in chef Thomas' home. We could hear him cooking up our meals while we chatted at our table. The wait time was less than expected and our meals were delicious! We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

We are regulars at Papillon, and 1) call ahead 809-970-7197 at 4:15 pm for your same day or next day reservation . 2) be prepared to eat some " great food " The food is always " consistent and great " and also fast . The top restaurant in Puerto Plata !

OUR 20TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

the highest praises for Tomas and Le Papillon. we went there for our 20th wedding anniversary. the place is in a jungle setting, very quaint. tomas is an outstanding chef. when we got there, the lights were out, but that didn't deter Tomas.. candles on the table, and a mini light bar which we didn't use. the menu is fantastic, with sizable portions. tomas the owner and chef, bends over backwasrds to make your visit outstanding.. tomas brought out a heart shaped piece of black forest cake for our anniversary dessert, which was outstanding. when we were ready to leave Tomas put the beautiful bouquet of flowers from our in a bag for my wife to take with here. this made her day
