My wife and I have visited Bermuda several times and had been aware of Art Mel's for a long time. The trouble is, this place isn't in the middle of Hamilton. It's on the outskirts and not easy to get to, except by car. Well,...if you know Bermuda, the primary modes of transportation for tourists, like us, are the public methods (bus, ferry or taxi). You can rent scooters too, but I'm not fond of taking my life into my own hands. Now, we're seasoned bus and ferry users, but the cost of a taxi in Bermuda is too high to satisfy our curiosity. For while I love seafood, my wife doesn't. Spending a bunch on a taxi to a fish sandwich place that only one of can enjoy wasn't worth the expense.
I've had the excellent fish sandwich at Wahoo's in St George, because we were able to take the ferry.
That all said, we tried a new form of transportation on our last visit in 2019 (pre-Covid), the electric cars! We rented one for two of the three days our ship was docked at the Dockyard and finally got to Art Mel's!
Its a GREAT fish sandwich! The place is a hole in the wall, with zero interior and exterior seating for dining. Basically, you place your order and take it somewhere else to eat. Just don't try to eat the sandwich without help, especially on a hot day! That was my mistake. Once we got our food (the signature fish sandwich for me, chicken tenders & fries for my wife and a couple of cans of soda), we hopped back in our little electric car and drove over to Ft Hamilton to find a picnic table.
It was a lovely, HOT day. Given the heat of the day, I was barely able to finish half the sandwich during our little picnic. I wrapped the rest up and eventually finished the whole thing before we got back to the Dockyard, but, I was stuffed and passed on dinner that night.
So, was Art Mel's worth it? yes, but you'll need to have an easy way to get to the place and either have a huge appetite or someone to share the sandwich.More
