It's a while since we've eaten here and the first thing we noticed was an improvement in the decor improving the ambience. We both had Turbot from the specials blackboard which was as good as any fish course you would get at the Seahorse and half the price! The service was efficient and friendly making for an enjoyable evening

We have been here several times and I am constantly impressed by the staff here. They make everything from scratch from the chocolates you have with your coffee to ice cream. It is truly delicious with generous portions and welcoming warm front of house! A must visit everytime we are in Devon!

We were staying at the wonderful nearby Strete Barton House who recommended The Laughing Monk. Despite being full Friday and Saturday evenings we are accommodated at an early 6:30pm sitting and at no time did we feel pressured to leave. All the staff were friendly, professional and welcoming. Friday we both had the delicious aged steak which was cooked to... More

The restaurant was recommended to us by our B&B. On the spur of the moment we decided to make a visit without a prior booking. Foolish maybe, but we were given a lovely table and then the restaurant began to fill up, it is obviously very popular, even in the mid-week. The restaurant has great ambience coupled with tasteful décor and... More

This is the best meal we have had on our 2 weeks driving through southwest england. The restaurant is in the small village of Stete outside of dartmouth and next door to our amazing b and b, strete barton house. the food was all fresh, prepared to perfection and the staff was marvelous.

We ate here on the recommendation of Strete Barton House (see separate review) who booked a table for our first night. We liked it so much we booked again for our second night. Everything was absolutely perfect - the food, the service and the ambience. Imaginative menu, and the food tasted fresh, bursting with flavour and was all perfectly cooked.... More

A group of six for a birthday celebration handled with consummate professionalism from all. A good menu, wine list and exceptional value for money. Food service and environment all very good.

We visited this restaurant on our last holiday to Dartmouth and this time we headed there on our first evening. The welcome was warm, the food was even better than we remembered and the service was efficient and attentive. Well done for confirming our memory of The Laughing Monk!

Not sure what to expect from a well eater restaurant in a remote Devon village but a warm welcome and some great food made it very worthwhile. I had a steak and I have to say it was succulent and tender my friends meals were equally good. I would make two minor comments, the puddings, I had the cheesecake which... More

Had wanted to try this for ages.... we weren't disappointed. The food was well cooked with a good blend of flavours . My only criticism would be the rather limited desert choice. The staff were really lovely and seemed naturally friendly rather than the usual generic waiting staff. The service was at a perfect pace. Would definitely recommend this place.

Family owned restaurant, relaxed atmosphere, serving the best local produce available. We are not a fine dinning restaurant but serving great food is our passion
