First let me tell you what is good, it's completely dog friendly which okay for some might not be important but others these kind of venues are still in the minority. The decor both the old bar and the new are lovely with plenty of seating both inside and outside the pub. However, the menu is expensive compared to what... More

The menu was varied and Specials were available. Food cooked to order and we did not have long to wait for it the chips were excellent and we enjoyed our meal. We did not stop after our meal as we thought the price of the drinks were high. It was an advantage that we could take our dog with us... More

Three of us visited this pub on a Saturday evening. The old part of the pub is quite small and was full when we arrived but we managed to get a table in the newish extension to it. However although this area is very spacious it lacked any atmosphere and it felt a bit like being in a canteen. There... More

We have just spent the weekend at Winterton on sea and found ourselves at The Fishermans Return. Lovely traditional village pub with very friendly staff and nice friendly locals who clearly like to engage with visitors. The real ale was rather flat and didn't seem tip top condition if I am honest but plenty of Draught to choose from as... More

We spent a very pleasant couple of hours on the beach and in the dunes, dog walk and swim. Leaving at about 2pm and feeling thirsty and peckish we decided to have a couple of drinks and a small snack. I didn't bother to look at the menu, I asked the barman if calamari was available, it was as a... More

We popped into the Fishermans Return one afternoon after a day trip out, for a pint and enjoyed it and vowed to return for a meal. We stayed the night in the thatched cottages at Hermanus and walked down to the pub around 6.30. We did not feel very welcome on arrival, no one looked up from the bar to... More

Went for lunch today and saw sandwiches and omlettes come out and they looked delicious and the pint I had was spot on. With that in mind we thought this is going to be good. We had white bait for starter which wasn't too bad but a bit sloppy as it is not battered or breadcrumbed. We had 2 med... More

A pretty dog friendly pub with good menu. Now comes the 'however' bit... the delicious fish was lost amongst unnecessary mountains of salad and potatoes. Just looking at the plate made me feel full up before even the first mouthful. It was very difficult to fillet and eat the fish as there was so much on the plate. The whitebait... More

Dear 166wow Thank you for your review especially the comment about the 'delicious fish' I am extremely pleased that you enjoyed it and will pass your comments onto the chef. Regarding the 'unnecessary mountains of potatoes and salad' this is a personal choice; open to each individuals opinion, but it must be better to have more than not enough? After... More

Myself and my husband have been visiting this pub for years, so we were excited to have booked to stay with friends for the evening as we had a wedding to attend near by. The room looked nice but unfortunately on our return home the ensuite smelt like drains. It was the same the next day so myself and my... More

Dear Katie It is very sad to see that your first review is not only negative but a somewhat fabrication of the truth. When you and your friends arrived and were shown to your rooms, immediately you insisted that two double rooms had been booked; it was only when you were shown the email sent confirming the booking of one... Went to book table for 5 adults and 1 child for Friday night they laughed said no need would have loads of tables. Arrived it was getting very busy, there is nobody to greet you or seat you, just help yourself, got a high chair, and ordered drinks and food at bar. Only ordered olives and bread and oils for... Dear Lynne D Thank you for your less than favourable review that does appear to be based on your incorrect notion that the Fishermans Return is a restaurant; this is not the case. The Fishermans Return is, always has been and has only ever been advertised as a pub. This is why you were ‘not greeted and seated’, had to... More
