What a nice village restaurant

We were recommended this restaurant by our guide when visiting the town at the end of a walking tour. It is up in the hills, very well served by the locals and is definitely worth a visit. The prices were very reasonable and we ate very authentic food at a street side table. The experience was lovely being amongst a typical village

Exceptional restaurant off the beaten track

Wow...this was a holiday highlight. Recommended for lunch after visiting Kritsa which was full of coach loads of tourists. This idyllic and charming restaurant at the heart of the prettiest mountain village was just perfect. They were quite busy but with a warm welcome, wine, nibbles and 5 types of bread it was a pleasure to wait whilst our food was prepared. Menu was amazing and it was difficult to choose from the tempting range of authentic dishes. Starters and mains were absolutely delicious and the bill was very reasonable. Thanks for a great experience.

Lasithi Village Restaurant

Xatheri was recommended by our friend and resident of the beautiful village of Lasithi on Crete. Located in the village centre along a tree lined & shady street is this lovely restaurant. A range of authentic Cretan food is on offer and it was suggested we try the grilled lamb chops, 7x kneaded bread, Cretan salad, spicy cheese dip and the cheese pie with honey. The service was a little slow however, it was very friendly and why should there be a rush when on holiday. We were surprised by the delicious yoghurt and cherry dessert which was complimentary following our meal. If you are a wine lover, you'll be impressed with their wine selection. We were even lucky enough to get a park on the street just by the restaurant. If you wish to sit outside under the trees, you may have a wait however, there is lots of seating inside. Booking on a Sunday is a must as it's one of their busiest days apparently.

One of the best traditional cretan food i’ve ever tried, prices reasonable for the quality, very good and fresh products. the service was also very good, quick and very nice waiters. the location is great. we really loved it, i recommend it a lot.

A taverna that has set the town buzzing!

Xatheri had a makeover a few years ago, and is now one of the main reasons Kroustas has become such a popular place to visit. Fantastic food which is a little different than the usual, with tasty twists - like orange with the oil in the Chicken salad (guess what we'll be doing with our salad dressing when we go home!) The service is always great, and tonight's rib eye steak was beautifully cooked and tender with just a little seasalt on top. Great chicken dish in sauce, mushrooms with garlic, fried potatoes and that salad! Came a few days ago with friends, and will be back again with more soon!

Came up here with local friend,and....food was so delicious i forgot to snap them before we ate up everything. I dont eat lsmb and goat,but here i tasted so good it went down my hungry mouth. Its worth takin a visit up here away from noisy tourist streets. Cant say it was expensive vs what you get. Restrooms are also above modern standards.

Excellent gastronomic experience

Delicious, charming restaurant in a remote area in the mountains. We went as a family and shared multiple appetizers and mains and absolutely everything was delicious, from the Xatheri salad, to the fried feta, to the fava beans, the sautéed lamb, grilled mushrooms, lamb chops… everything. It’s so good we plan to go back before heading home.

Some different dishes

We stopped for lunch, out of season. I thought from the sign outside it was just a Kafeneion but it had a lovely menu. It was nice to see dishes you don't see very often. I had sausage and spinach pasta dish while my wife had the Lazanya. (not quite what we expected) a cheesey pasta dish, but both tasty. Service was a little unimpressive, the waiter finished his shift while we were eating, perhaps he just wanted to go home.

Best place we ate on Crete. Whatever you order is utterly fresh and tasty. The xigalo cheese was delicious, the Dolmadakia marvellous. Pork souvlaki, sausages, the wedding rice… really enjoyed the honest tastes. Also the house rose wine was a pleasure: not too sweet nor too sour, nicely balanced and served with a cooler. Off the beaten path, what I consider authentic Cretan village tavern. Exceptional service from the man himself (Manos sp?). Highly recommend the pork skewers, fried feta and fresh lamb chops. The local village folks were nearby giving us a true feel for village life. 10/10 will be back during our next trip to Crete.

Yes well I am very disappointed, having read the reviews I expected to actually be in a typical restaurant, quiet and traditional. We ended up in a very noisy corner of the terrace with the scouts, motorcycles and pickups passing (well it’s true at their dump, we had not booked)! The loud music above us, a second requested bottle of water that never arrived and dishes that we waited relatively long. The dishes were good but not crazy... me who loves lamb I was happy to taste Cretan lamb or mutton.... No more than that! I had more fun with small chops in Morocco for example. For my part, I preferred other less acclaimed small restaurants in Kristas! Missed test. It is a shame because the staff is friendly.

Beautiful village restaurant in the mountains above Agios Nikalaos. (22 euros each way by taxi from Agios) beautiful local cuisine, very different from the restaurants in town. Chose a variety of Meze dishes which were tasty . Thoroughly recommend a drive to this restaurant.

Wanting somewhere to have lunch after my trip to Agios Nikolas, I decided to make a 20-minute drive to Xatheri. I was justified and with the above, my goal was fulfilled, I ate dishes of local cuisine executed perfectly and I really have no words for this restaurant. Excellent service, friendly people with a smile, great flavors, perfect wine and a playlist I could listen to for hours! A thousand thumbs up!

Maybe it's a matter of taste but for me...just not!! I generally refrain from posting criticism but I find the reviews below too misleading for a vacationer who goes to a place just because he reads Trip's Contributions. So .. we took the broad beans, what does it take to make broad beans? The cream was also good but in a sea of spicy oil as if we were in Naples and bacon or bacon diced on top that honestly ruined the whole dish. But I say .. I understand wanting to innovate but if there is no idea rather do a good thing in the traditional way ... The skioufichta pasta only with cheese ... but why??!! The sheep with half-cooked spaghetti (this is an Italian opinion then maybe other foreigners like it so) but drowned in a liquid sauce that you do not understand why it is there ... boh .. I put 2 stars because the place is very nice and cute.for the price is in line with other places.

We ate in this wonderful restaurant on the 1st day of our holiday. Although it is located in a small village of Crete, it has a very large and up-to-date wine bar. The food is traditional though, but with modern touches. We ate the most nice cheesecakes with sauce, pork pie, googies with chicken and vegetables and 2 wonderful salads. Incredible ice cream cheese for the end. The staff was more than helpful and the Owner very friendly.At the end we bought and sneakers. If you want an authentic Cretan cuisine, a little tempted, you definitely go.
