Me and my Dad came here, I am vegetarian and my dad is pescatarian. I did my research before we came and I saw there was a tofu menu. We showed our waiter a card we had that said we were vegetarian and she went and got someone else. I swear we gave this poor man a nervous breakdown, as we explained our diets to him. He went away then came back and said he could do us a meal and gave us a price, but it would have to be two vegetarian meals. We said that was ok. We were given a started that I found ok, with tofu and cold veggies. The main, I feel sick thinking about it, BUT that's just my taste. I thought I liked Japanese food, but now I know there is some stuff out there I can't eat. Then we were given the best tempura I've ever had and some ice cream. I felt so guilty and tried to eat as much as possible, it was very kind of them to accommodate us like that but really this restaurant is not suitable for vegetarians.

Pleasant kaiseki restaurant (see photos). Menu is more elaborate at dinner; lunch is simpler and good value. Located in traditional building in Ueno park, diners sit on tatami mat floor. Reservations may be needed to avoid waiting. Some English spoken.

The origin of Kaiseki cuisine is said to have started from the casual tea snacks carried in one's sleeve, evolving into exquisitely prepared dishes today. Known for its delicate flavors, nutritional balance, and health benefits, this lunch spot offers exceptional value, with options starting at less than 2000 yen. I've translated the restaurant's menu into Chinese for friends who may need it.

We visited for a family lunch and were really impressed by both the food and the atmosphere. The bean rice was a perfect complement to the meal, and the okara tea was a unique, warming touch. The restaurant’s traditional Japanese interior, paired with views of the garden, created such a peaceful ambiance. The service was generally good, and overall, it was a truly enjoyable experience.

We were lucky that we were able to get in this lovely restaurant without a reservation (they were no longer able to accomodate the guests after us since they were already full) Ambience was of an edo period tea house, in which you need to remove your shoes prior to entering and the windows overlook a lovely garden. We loved the healthy traditional kaiseki cuisine, we had the fish set which was beautifully presented. It's main course is a slightly sweet grilled fish that paired perfectly with the pickled vegetables and the smooth and creamy chawanmushi. We were already full and extremely happy with our lunch and were about to leave thinking we are already finished with our meal and to our pleasant surprise they told us to return to our seats as they have not yet served our desert and tea (which we didn't know was included in our meal).

Tip 1: You absolutely need a reservation. You can use Table Check. I saw them turn people away because the place is in demand and not huge. The house: The person who greeted us and got us seated told us after the meal that the house is historic and much is original, and the government does not allow changes to be made. Dining: You will probably be shown to your own private room with some kind of relaxing view. Meal: The meal is seasonal and traditional. After time in Japan, you probably tried lots of ramen, katsu and curry so this is actually something different and special. Service: Very attentive. Price: Yes it’s sort of expensive. Ambiance: Relaxing. Tip 2: They put something like a coin on your table. After your done, take this to the front to pay. No one is coming to bring a bill. Overall: I would recommend as another Japanese cuisine experience worth a try.

Innsyoutei provides a tranquil and traditional Japanese ryokan experience. The rooms are comfortable and well-maintained, featuring tatami mats and shoji screens. The onsen (hot spring baths) are a highlight, offering a relaxing and rejuvenating soak. the kaiseki Aoi dish set of 8 dishes so memorable. While the location is a bit remote, the peaceful setting and authentic atmosphere make it a worthwhile escape.

We visited here with a Japanese friend and her parents. They made reservations as it's always busy. Our table was upstairs, so we had a lovely view, even if the maples hadn't quite turned red at that point. The room was massive and filled with tatami. We had a table with low chairs rather than having to sit on the floor (her parents are getting on, and my dodgy knee has seen better days), and I was grateful for that. This is a nice kaiseki place with ladies in kimono and beautiful art on the walls. We all had the unagi, which came with a myriad of other dishes, including sashimi. It was all served in beautiful ceramics and lacquer wear. A wonderful experience with impeccable service. We'd love yo eat here again!

Absolutely incredible place that embodies the heart and soul of tradition. Shoes off are a must, and respect and quiet is valued in this exquisite establishment. The service was excellent and the food was presented in a fashionable manner. The cuisine was of very good quality and absolutely delicious. I left very satisfied

By far the best restaurants that I've tried in Japan. Quality of the food is stellar. Waiters are extremely professional and kind, they will guide you step by step through the menu. Every dish is a nice discovery in taste. As a western person you'll be suprised every bite! Since the waiters will cook some dishes in front of you, as a guest you'll fell the experience much more. I'm lactose allergic. Even though their fixed menu doesn't have a fully lactose free course, I had the chance to try a rearranged version of their dishes. They made that version just for me to enjoy their cuisine. The restaurant itself is a beautiful typical building, in a magnific spot in Ueno park. I extremely suggest to have a dinner here. Booking is needed.

Booked this restaurant long in advance, it's easy to do it online. Otherwise you may need to queue for a long time. Cosy setting. Tranquil ambience. Lovely traditional food. Very reasonable price. Really enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend when you visit the beautiful Ueno Park.

This traditional japanese sukiyaki chicken restaurant provides both tasty chicken sukiyaki set and classic japanese garden ambience in Ueno park. Sitting on Tatami matt and chatting, dining and also drinking beers or sake are wonderful experience.

We walking in for lunch and had no idea what that place was. It turned out to be an amazing restaurant ! Traditional tatamis, beautiful presentation and tasty food. We were lucky to be served by a young lady who spoke fluently English and who explained everything about all the dishes. The restaurant did accommodate the lunch to be wheat and sesame free, which was a treat ! Our 8 year daughter had a kids menu and loved it also.

Wanted to go to this restaurant last time when in Tokyo, but didn't have time, so determine to go when in town this time round. Didn't have booking but walked straight in as soon as it opened. Traditional setting, sitting on tatami mat, staff very friendly and helpful, can speak English, so quite foreigners friendly and not intimidating like some formal Japanese dinning. A few choices for lunch, all very good value. Food was delicious, highly recommended! Thanks for the hospitality

I've been to Ueno Park dozens of times and never noticed this lovely restaurant before. I'm usually at one of the park's museums or focused on the spring cherry blossoms. But last October, we came across this wonderful building during a stroll in the center of the park at lunch time. The structure dates back to 1875 and is surrounded by cherry trees. We went up the steps to the entrance, where a kimono-clad woman told us this area of the restaurant was already full. This part holds private tatami rooms and a small dining room. She referred us to the rustic tea room with a separate entrance at ground level. We got the last table here and noted that all the other diners were older Japanese women, engaged in quiet conversations. Big windows offered a nice woodsy view. Waitstaff wore beautiful kimonos and our waitress spoke English. She gave us menus, printed in English, offering traditional Japanese set menus. These ranged from 1680 Yen (about $16 U.S.) to 6800 Yen (about $63 U.S.). We ordered two different mid-range sets to share items. Both orders came beautifully presented on small dishes placed in woven baskets. I think an artist would have wanted to use both meals on the table as subjects in a still-life painting. Big fans of traditional Japanese cuisine, we could not have been happier with the delicacies and impeccable service. We were treated like royalty. What a lovely place for lunch! Innsyoutei stands about a 5-minute walk from the JR Ueno station. It also offers dinner at higher prices. Reservations recommended. The restaurant accepts only cash for payment.

Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
