About
Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu, on the corner of Nishi-Azabu Crossing, is located just 10 minutes from Tokyo Metro Roppongi, Nogizaka, and Hiroo stations are open until 3 am. Known for being the location of former-US President Bush and former-Prime Minister Koizumi’s Izakaya Summit, and even more famously known for its scene in Quentin Tarantino’s 2004 film Kill Bill, Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu’s nostalgic atmosphere brings you back to a Japan of a bygone era. To this day, Gonpachi’s fresh soba noodles, grilled skewers, tempura, and more are popular amongst both Japanese and foreign customers alike. We use carefully selected, regionally-sourced ingredients in everything from the fresh buckwheat that our chefs grind into a flour and use to make our famous homemade soba noodles to our tempura fried to crispy perfection. Whether for lunch or dinner, a date or any special occasion, if you live in Tokyo or are just passing through, we offer an unparalleled Japanese dining experience.

We came here for my birthday on January 6th. We had had to change the reservation details due to missed connections on the way to Tokyo. The staff who helped us change reservations were kind and helpful and that continued on to our arrival into Gonpachi. When we arrived at 6pm the place was quite quiet but by the time we left two and a bit hours later it was truly alive. An exciting experience in Tokyo to be sure, and the food is better than one would expect from a place that shows the famous people who have eaten there as you enter.
I would question the price of the course menu, however. While the food is fresh and the yakiniku tasting heavenly, the service did not always live up to the price. Our main server was excellent: personable, efficient and lively, much like the rest of the venue. Unfortunately, they were training some staff when we were there and sometimes had three or four servers plus a manager around our table. It was a bit much and a little stressful to see glasses almost tipping over and senior staff looking worried. I won't fault that, in fact, I think it's excellent to hire people and train them up to be good staff (everyone starts somewhere), but we were more put off by one of the senior servers who, when I asked for a replacement drink from our nomihoudai plan (a system that lets you drink what you want for two hours) kind of just slammed the replacement on the table away from me so I had to reach across to get it. We had a laugh about it but, considering the price of the evening, and the fact I wasn't rude about the mistake, it was a little inappropriate.
However, besides that, our evening was amazing, the staff are warm and fun and the food on offer is very good. Would recommend anyone coming through Tokyo who liked Kill Bill should give it a shot!

The food and the ambient of the place was excellent! From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by all the staff with a big shout which my Wife and I found fun. We were sat on the bar in front of the kitchen, which was very entertaining since we got to see all the different meals get prepared and how it is that everything gets done. They have a very orderly system between the staff and waiters which I found to be quite nice and the waiters would come by ever so often to ask if everything was ok.
It was a dinner for a special occasion since it was my Wife's birthday and we were on our honeymoon, so the staff brought her a cake and sang her happy birthday and all. We were very pleased!
The only reason I am giving this 4 and not 5 stars is that as some other reviews might mention, some plates are overpriced, like simple "chicken skewers" being more expensive than they should.
Other than that, great restaurant to go visit in Tokyo!

Went on 31/12/2019 for a New Year celebration. We ordered well in advance (almost 2 months). It was freezing outside and warm and very welcoming inside. Lovely, happy, noisy atmosphere in a restaurant packed with gaijins as New Year eve is traditionally a family occasion in Japan. We ate, drank and were had a great time.
The food was simple and tasty and the service was quick, efficient and warm. The background music was great and the kitchen staff shouting greetings to every guest who enters is hilarious. So, if you are in Tokyo and want to eat in an informal, fun restaurant in lovely decor go there by all means. Even the prices are reasonable.

Went here because my friend loves Kill Bill. *sigh* Other than that, it's not really that big of a deal. The food was good but it's not like it's 10x better than any other izakaya. If you're a tourist, go ahead and eat here. But if you want to eat somewhere local, there's a thousand other izakaya in Tokyo that offer the same food for a cheaper price. We had to book this place early on. Interior design was the best part but even that's not that special. I bought a few skewered food just to eat with my friends but honestly enjoyed the food I bought from the station much more.

Tourist experience! Excellent food and beverages. Animated atmosphere with host celebrating birthdays and leading Japanese chants. Reservation required, but due to popularity of this place, can be held for 15 minutes only. Try to get a table in front of the cooks’ stations. So glad this restaurant was on the itinerary!

Our friends took us here for dinner while visiting tokyo. It was a huge place but a cozy feeling. Loved their vegetable platter with the crab fat dip (Don't know exactly the description) As a first time diner, it did not disappoint, will recommend it to future visitors. Servers were mostly foreigners and ideally for foreigners in my opinion but the food overall was very satisfying.

My wife, two adult daughters and I went to Gonpachi because our youngest daughter enjoyed the Kill Bill scene that was inspired by the restaurant motif. I was a bit skeptical but I have to admit, the overall restaurant atmosphere and design was quite fun and interesting and would surely recommend a visit (but only once since its touristy). We ordered a few different foods, which all tasted average and the wine by the glass was actually poured the size of a half-glass. Yes it was touristy but we knew that going in, but must say overall we enjoyed the experience.

What a fantastic place. Service spot on and boy do they work. Food excellent. Potato Salad not anything like the European style, best dish of the night. Deep fried dried squid with hot praprika excellent and I don’t usually like squid. Squid balls again just the best, again I usually can’t stand them. The timber hall, just a treat. We sat up on the mezzanine and still had great service with food arriving hot. Place was packed, and good fun though. Bar was spectacular in different types of sake etc. thoroughly recommend and would definitely take other folk along anytime.

What a bummer… I added this restaurant to our itinerary in Tokyo because-Kill Bill, of course (my husband loves the movie, so it was just a touristy experience and we knew that going in). Things were going pretty well.. seated quickly, liked the atmosphere, husband took his round of photos… and then our waitress took our order and NEVER CAME BACK. After an hour we were miserable and hungry- we actually tried to stop a couple of people before finally getting the attention of the hostess/manager. She was apologetic in the moment but we still waited another twenty minutes to eat and the waitress failed to come over and at least acknowledge the mistake. No attempt to rectify otherwise. The food was tough to enjoy at that point, as we just housed it to end the experience and move our frustrated kids along. I would not recommend, sadly.

I do not do a lot of reviews. However, I am compelled write one tonight. I have been a patron of Gonpachi since early 2003. When i first started going it was one of the best experiences in Tokyo - food, ambiance and service. This was before the release of Kill Bill. However, even after the film was released and the restaurant realized increased fame and popularity, I continued to bring clients and the food and experience remained high.
However, going back this time after COVID, it is a totally different place and not for the better. The prices have gone up and the food quality and atmosphere gone down precipitously. While the service is still good, it was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had in Japan. Don't waste your time or money, if food or atmosphere mean anything to you.
The food was simplify bad. I would rate as one of the worst food experiences and easily the worst Japanese food I have had anywhere in the world ever. The teppanyaki was limited in choice and was average at best. The sushi was also average and the sushi rolls were the worst i have ever seen or tasted. I cannot believe that the rolls were made in Japan because I have never had rolls so bad even outside of Japan. Super Market sushi and maki are far better. All of this for premium prices - which I do not mind paying if the food quality matches which it does not.
Clearly, the management is banking on its past reputation and its appearance in a movie. I can understand why the Japanese have stopped patronizing this establishment and why it is full of foreign tourists.
Many restaurants change over time and this one certainly has. Don't bother trying to bring back the past - simply find another choice.

Gonpachi has been operating for so long, yet, it continues to draw foreign guests.
I had a longtime friend come over the other day and we all suggested him to go somewhere else, but he ended up going to Gonpachi anyway.
If you want a quick taste of Japanese food in the Roppongi area, this is a place you can't skip.

Few Halal Options Available. Book in Advance for Authentic Halal Wagyu Beef. 100% certified they showed me the packaging.
Beef was buttery and beautiful (however, much cheaper in Osaka).
They do not sell fried potato chips 🍟 which is what you NEED when eating steak but they gave us rice. This is not their fault they probably do not know western taste.
Amazing dining experience! With there with my wife, very romantic but suitable for family’s.
Service was 5* both times we went.
A bit more more on the expensive side but 100% worth it.
Had to ask for halal wagyu beef 5 times before they understood me. I think they order it in and freeze it so it’s not fresh like I wanted :( but luckily they had one left and agreed to make it for me if I waited.
This is understandable as they must have few Muslim customers.
But it was well worth the wait. I would suggest you bring your own McDonald’s chips and ask them to refry to have with your steak. I’m sure they would.
The manager a Middle Eastern with long hair was very nice and looked after us for the night. He spoke fluent Japanese. All the rest of the staff were all Japanese and would make a big show when drinks were ordered and when you left.
Love it would go back! Had a prawn tempura dish for lunch and the wavy steak in evening. They had halal sauces for us as well :)
Please get frozen potato chips and a fryer!

Visited restaurant last week on my trip to Tokyo, the food was poor quality and didn’t taste very good. It wasn’t explained to us what the food actually was. The restaurant was very loud , staff kept shouting out. It was over priced with too many people packed in. In the women’s bathroom there was no running hot water and staff were washing their hands in there too. I would give this restaurant a miss it’s not worth the hassle of booking it too. Too many better places in Tokyo to not waste time here.

People who have reviewed this place as “excellent”, or anything else positive for that matter, are far too wrapped up in the quentin tarantino hype. This place was the most expensive yet the most basic and poor quality meal we’ve had in Japan in the whole of our 2 week stay. Appetisers came out way too quick which is always a bad sign and main food/the meat was poor quality. FAR too noisy in the restaurant as well - for something so expensive I have no idea why they blast out western music and also allow big groups of people to yell and shout - we’ve had better experiences in a HUB. This places is a tourist trap. Nothing else. Don’t waste your time.

Global Dining in general provides a terrible dining experience and a very low class atmosphere. The music is too loud and the people talk very loudly. It is not a good atmosphere to enjoy dining or have conversations with people.
Gompachi Nishiazabu in particular is extremely loud (both the music and the people) and the entire restaurant smells like vodka and vomit.
I would also like to emphasize that you can eat better Japanese food elsewhere. Japanese people like myself cook Japanese food better. You can even buy better Japanese food in supermarkets for a lower price.
I would like to ask all staff to be more considerate of the atmosphere, smell, and food quality, if they think it is important to provide a pleasant dining experience.
