First day in Tokyo & it started raining, so we ducked into Ginza Aster. It is expensive to begin with - 9,504 yen or about $94 US for 1 small bowl of Hot & Sour soup without shrimp & 1 stuffed crab claw for starters...& then a simple main course for both of us. I had my soup & half my shrimp dish before my partner even got his appetizer. When asked I was frankly told they were cooking it. Great, I'm done with my meal & my partner is just starting his. The only one whom should eat here is someone who speaks Chinese. That way you get what you want & they will treat you courteously. If your a Westerner, move on to something else. Not only was the service terrible but it was expensive.More

As recommended by our family friends, we cautiously made a reservation and reserved their signature Shark's fin dish. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and quantity. They have Shark's fin farm which makes the price more affordable. We tried two types of Shark's Fin...- one the normal in superior soup and one with the crab meat. The crab meat ones ended up being a bit disappointing and I think the normal one in superior soup will be sufficient. For Chinese guests, I actually recommend you just have the shark's fin dish - one per person instead of sharing. All the other dishes are more suited for Japanese taste and you can savor those dishes at home. Just focus on the Shark's Fin and remember you need to reserve them in advance.More

It was my first time to visit the main restaurant of Ginza Aster as I've visited some branch restaurants. It's located on the Ginza street (Main street in Ginza area) and very convenient. The ambience of the restaurant with antique furnishing goods and paintings is...splendid. All of the dishes we ordered were delicious, but I especially liked Chinese-style barbecued pork in appetizer and Sichuan-style bean curd. Service is also excellent! They tried serving the dishes at best timings.More

As we stepped into Ginza Aster, the atmosphere was very nice! We found a calm escape from busy Ginza street and peaceful settings inspired by beautiful Chinese furniture. The food was great, especially I loved their Honer Walnuts Shrimp! It was so tasty with some...crunchy gelatin noodles on top. The appetizer plate was so beautiful and they were all such elaborate dishes! And the service was extremely good.More

I visited this restaurant in their Kamakura location for lunch. My main dish was the Hiyashi-chuka with sesame sauce. Very deep, well-flavored sesame sauce with chewy noodles and lots of fresh vegetables. Most surprising, though was the gyoza. Perfectly cooked and very juicy. Not your...typical plate of dumplings! Definitely a must eat at this place. I learned later from our kind waitress that each dumpling is meticulously prepared with a set number of folds, etc. The chef also came out to our table during our meal to welcome us. No wait time on a busy and hot summer weekend day. Very comfortable interior and spacious seating. Highly recommended for a new chinese food experience in japan!More

Ginza Aster is unique in several ways. Americans like myself are spoiled by very good Chinese food, especially if we know the Chinatowns in San Francisco, Honolulu or New York. If one happens to have eaten in Hong Kong or Shanghai, as I have, it...is easy to feel disappointed elsewhere. Which brings me to Gina Aster in Tokyo. Here you have superb Chinese food served in European elegance....very rare indeed, perhaps unique to the great cities of the world. There are no round tables at Ginza Aster with the rotating service piece, seating 10. There are no aquarium filled with tonight's dinner. There are no walls with red paneling and giant golden dragons....no ...the Ginza Aster stands out for its subdued elegance, quiet, and stately. The customers sit at tables for 2 or 4, men in business attire; ladies dressed as one might find them at private clubs in New York. The service personnel work gracefully and in silence. There is no hustle and bustle. None of the excitement one associates with the best Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong. No dim sum carts, no grand entrances with chefs carryings ducks on elaborate platters. No. The Ginza Aster is much more like the Savoy at high tea, whisper quiet. The music is appropriate to power lunches, not graduation parties. In other words, it is a Japanese restaurant serving Chinese cuisine...that is the key and this is why the restaurant is unique. So too the food: served in individual portions, available in lovely pre-selected sets, in multiple courses for individual diners: appetizers, main courses, desserts and tea. My wife and I ordered two such course meals and were stunned by the variety and range of tastes and combinations.More

When my boyfriend first told me that he was going to take me out to a Chinese Restaurant, smack in the middle of Ginza, I was already excited. I'd never had upscale Chinese before. We decided to try their lunch since their lunch sets were...reasonably priced. The restaurant that he had chosen turned out to be Ginza Aster, which has been well-liked and continually evolving since its opening in 1926. Before arriving at the restaurant, I was a little nervous since this was my first experience eating at a place like this. However, the staff were all friendly and the other customers weren't dressed overly fancy, so it was easy for us to walk in and feel comfortable. My initial excitement and expectations were easily fulfilled with the first bite into the food. Every dish was beautiful to look at and delightful to taste. The Black Wagyu was so tender, and made me think, "so this is what it feels like to have meat "melt" in your mouth." The dish that I liked best though was their almond jelly dessert. I love sweets and have tried a huge variety, but this almond jelly (with a scoop of coconut ice cream and citrus jelly) was hands down the best dessert that I have ever had. I recommend this restaurant, especially for their lunch sets, if you're looking for a fancy but affordable experience in Ginza. I guarantee that you'll have a scrumptious experience.More
