This place was our first introduction to Costa Rican craft beer (which we found to be generally quite good, notwithstanding the snarky comments from reviewers whose palates are apparently much more advanced than ours) and it set the bar extremely high. We'd heard there was...something of a craft beer scene in CR, but I'd expected it to be mostly in line with Central American macrobrews, toward the lager/pilsner side of things. I was completely wrong. We tried a sampler, and wound up buying a bunch of cans to take with us. They did have some lighter beers, but the best, and the ones we wound up taking home, were the New England IPA, the amber ale, and the chocolate stout. My wife is a huge fan of hazy IPAs, and put Cerveceria Independiente's up against any she'd had in the US. The amber is a good, drinkable beer with lots of flavor. My personal favorite was the chocolate stout. Chocolate stouts aren't exactly rare, and I'm not always a huge fan, but this one had an amazing chocolate taste without coming across as too sweet or too malty. A truly excellent beer. The beers are a bit on the pricey side when compared to your average Costa Rican beer, but after being in country for almost two weeks and sampling eight or ten different craft brewers, I can say they're among the best I had the whole time.
The setup is also really nice. It's a small tap room with a huge patio/garden area, surrounded by small food stands. We weren't staying in Potrero--we only stopped in because we happened to be driving from Playa Azucar down to Tamarindo and saw the brewery sign--but it seems like it would be a cool place to hang out. The couple who ran things was also very friendly (and, like me, originally from Utah--enough to make me consider a new career path). Highly recommend!More
We were recommended by a restaurant in Coco called Tucanoos to locate this local brewery for the finest beer around. They were not mistaken. We tasted a flight and enjoyed what they had on tap. You know the sign of a good business is when...they are out of the favorites! They also have non alcoholic drinks that they make and so bring the kids and dog too if need be. Lovely, smart couple. We will return on our next trip and tell our large gang of beer lovers to seek this place out when they travel to Costa Rica.More
A great little independent brewery run by an American couple self taught from the internet and now masterbrewers with a great knowledge and passion for brewing and the brewing process. TJ (Thomas Joyce) knows his stuff and is happy to talk about it and teach...those interested. You can see some of the operations and try 'a flight' of four beers. Not cheap but lovely. There are four eateries on the plot with one selling street food. Well worth a visit or two!More
Best beer in Costa Rica!!! We love that place! Finally a microbrewery who brew some interesting beers and not only IPA as is the trend in CR. The sour beer is out of this world and definitely worth the drive! We actually like all the...beers on offer and even better they are priced right and service and staff are great. The patio is perfect to chill out and have a few cold ones with friends. Just go!!!More
So glad we decided to stop in. This brewery has a prime location nestled between restaurants and the beach just a few steps away. They have a “garden” area which has 2–3 smaller restaurants. Grab a beer and some food to enjoy in the outdoor...area. We enjoyed their beer and company. They even gave us restaurant and excursion suggestions which we heeded and were pleasantly surprised. I have a feeling they will be doing big things!More
We stumbled upon this gem. The Hazy IPA is delicious. This is a great place to go with a group because everyone can choose what they want to eat from the different food vendors. I will definitely be returning the next time I’m in Playa...Flamingo.More
We stopped for drinks before dinner one night. Got to meet the owners and see the brewing process. Quite cool! The beers were great - we had the New England IPA - high alcohol content - but, quite tasty. Stop in and have a beer...or two - great beer AND service!More
