Great local pub with nice food and nice atmosphere.

This was the first time we have eaten here for a little while, the food was great, we were near a new air filter specially installed for Covid and we felt safe and welcome. The wait for food was not long, the vegetarian burger was good, as was my curry. The fish and chips were plentiful. We also treated ourselves to brownie and ice cream which was really yummy. Table service for both food and drinks and smiles all round. Unsure why we waited so long to visit for food but Will be back soon.

Best Festive menu in the area if not in the country.

We took my brother and his wife to the Volunteer for the Christmas menu and we were blown away by the quality of the food and the value for money. Every course was a real treat but the cheeseboard was in a class of its own. Can’t wait to go back.

After a few days of fine weather we awoke to a cloudy day with rain in the wind and a cold feel to the day. To cheer ourselves up we decided to go out for lunch and after a quick perusal of review websites decided to try the Volunteer Inn which seemed to please previous customers. We arrived early and received a friendly greeting. Menus promptly appeared showing a good range of pub lunch favourites and some interesting other dishes too. Admittedly it was not busy so we were able to chat with Adrian and Riana as we ate. Food was good, cooked by Adrian with fresh ingredients in the adjacent kitchen and promptly served by. Riana. We like animals so were delighted to have the company of Charlie the dog but Riana made sure he did not make a nuisance of himself. Interior is warm and welcoming and we appreciated the log fire which kept us warm on this cold April day. The wine list was better than you find in many pubs so we were well served for both food and drink. Highly recommended - we just wondered why we had never before tried the Volunteer despite living just 20 minutes away. We will be back.

Lovely Welcome

Lovely welcome from Charlie the resident dog, who tolerated our overly exuberant puppy! Friendly service and we sat at the lovely outside tables catching the last of the Summer sun. We had the fish and chips, which had delicious crispy batter, and the curry, which was flavourful and kindly served with chips instead off rice, as per my request. We finished with a heavenly brownie and ice cream.

We pre booked a table of 5 & I specifically requested a table at the front area of the pub, in the main bar. When we arrived they showed us to a table to the rear. It wasn't very busy so I asked why. A lame excuse was given and we sat down not wanting to cause a fuss. Im a vegetarian & at point of order, requested the steak mushroom to which the waitress replied 'Oh, we don't have any'. My partner asked for the gammon, to which the waitress replied 'Oh, we're out of gammon'. Eventually we all ordered something & to say we were disappointed is an understatement. Absolutely rubbish. Then to make matters worse, two kids started messing around in the skittle ally and banging around. The whole reason for my initial request to be seated in the main bar area was to avoid this 'youth club style dining'. It was like sitting in a youth club eating school dinners. Never again!!!

What an absolute gem of a pub.

What an absolute gem of a pub! It's lovely inside and very comfortable, with a shady beer garden at the rear and plenty of parking. Right in the centre of this very nice village, with the village shop opposite. The staff are unbelievably friendly and definitely have the hospitality gene. There is a main menu and a lunch deal, which is a bit smaller but still gives you the option of two courses for £12.50 and 3 for £17.50. My mother had the carrot and coriander soup and the Belgian Waffle and ate the lot (she's nearly 91) and said it was delicious. My husband and I had the Sausage & Mustard Mash in a yorkshire pudding. It was great but I would have preferred my gravy on the side to add when I wanted it because it made the Yorkshire pudding soggy. They love dogs here and both of ours were made very welcome. We will definitely return. It was a very nice lunch in a lovely village pub.

Needs to improve quality of food.

Sadly, despite a good lunch on a previous visit two years ago, this time we were served a very poor quality chicken leek and ham pie that you might get at a chip shop, chips that you would get better at a chip shop and the peas were missing. Other meal was apparently very hot. After paying the bill, I discovered that we'd been charged for a desert that we'd not had.

Sadly rather underwhelming

We were out for a meal with family and were surprised to be questioned by an older female member of staff as to our grandson's age, he was having a drink with his meal and accompanied by adult family members. All legal but we were made to feel as if it was not alright. My fish and chips was ok, my preference would be not to have salt already on it, the burger was nice enough and gammon/egg the same, nice garden and a shame we won't be back.

Best UK pub.

We tried the steak night offer last night and we were blown away by the quality and value. Exceptional food accompanied by a superb bottle of Shiraz at an amazing price. Put that together with the warm welcome and friendly locals and this has got to be one of the best pubs in the UK.

Moved into area recently. Really welcoming with really good food . Had our Christmas meal here with family.. had a wonderful meal with all trimmings. Made to feel very welcome by hosts. Highly recommend

Our visit to The Volunteer Inn was fantastic - the owners were friendly, the atmosphere relaxed and the food was scrumptious. Will be back again to attend some of the amazing events they've got planned!
