Having booked for 6 people for Sunday lunch, we were shown into an empty dark cold room where they offered to turn the lights on for us. Not very welcoming! The advertised carvery was not running, roasts were being served from the kitchen instead. When...bringing drinks, they realised the room was cold as we had put our coats back on. They said they would turn the heating on and "it would warm up in 20 minutes". Our roast dinners came but were only warm and tasted nothing special. The location is great and we have enjoyed lunch here before but not on this accasion.More

Sadly despite the beautiful setting and location, we didn't have the chance to eat out Sunday lunch. The restaurant areas were so tightly packed, you couldn't get in and out of your seat without getting people to move. We ended up cancelling our order and...leaving as it would not have been an enjoyable meal. So disappointing. The carvery was also left uncovered and drying out. We sat at our table for at least 30 minutes and it was untouched. I think the pub needs to rethink their table spacing and focus more on quality over quantity. Very disappointingMore

"We need burgers" said our visiting American cousins on the way back to Thrupp where we live almost next door to the Boat. We'd organised food at home but changed plans and Grace, Garret and their staff did the business to total US satisfaction. They...oversee a very friendly atmosphere at the pub for locals and visitors, many off canal narrowboats, with features such as Knit and Natter on Thursday evenings and a new programme of music nights. The garden is great and good for children. It's a modest but very pleasant place.More

Lovely staff, great pub food, gorgeous location. So nice to find a traditional pub with old fashioned pub grub. Well made, tasty and good value for money. The staff were friendly and helpful. There are also some lovely walks along the canal to work off...all that food. A great find.More

I wouldn't go again. Lovely to see all the Morse memorabilia in the pub but I can't recommend the Sunday carvery lunch.

We booked for 17 people. They Ran out of almost everything an hour into service with only 3 things left on the menu available. Table was not ready despite booking a week in advance they double booked the table. Had to wait 40 minutes to...be seated then another 20 minutes to order. They didn’t tell us about the lack of food until we had been there an hour. They had no roast potatoes for the carvery, no lamb shank no beef for the roast no steak. When the food came out another table had been given a different menu with pies and burgers on that we were not made aware of. The liver bacon and onions was served with no onions for all three that ordered it. Some food was still being served after a couple of people in our party had finished theirs. Plates and food were cold. Without doubt the worst meal I have ever had. It took me to bring the obvious to their attention before an apology was offered and that was that. I have emailed the details of this torrid affair to the email on their website and have not received a response over a week later. Avoid at all costs.More

Hello Scott!  Sorry I took so long to reply, I was just trying to comply with the request of 2 other members of your party (including the person who actually made the booking), who apologised on your behalf and asked me not to mind anything...More

We booked for a family reunion of 9 people and were shown a table in a small room where there was another group of eighteen people booked. It was very cramped and noisy so we decided to eat outside. We ordered wine and the glasses...were dirty and unpolished. We wanted the carvery but there was very little left and my husband had the very last of the beef. It was very disappointing. It was clearly overbooked.More

We have been here before and we're disappointed in both the food and the service, we were told that you can't go wrong with the fish and chips and they were right! Absolutely delicious and luckily no mint in the mushy peas, just traditional good...hearty food with no pretensions. Unfortunately the service was as bad as ever, the young lady who initially took our order was very pleasant but we were supposed to be served by a young man who managed to avoid our eyes whenever he came into the room even when he was 4 feet away - quite a talent really, we will definitely go again but only for the fish and chips after the previous experience 3 years ago with a mixed grill which had to be sent back then arrived totally charred and had to be refused. On that occasion the girl said she wouldn't charge us (even though we hadn't been able to eat anything) if we promised not to review her. DO GO, have the fish and chips and experience a meal that could have come from a good traditional fish and chip shop. I have to add the sticky toffee pudding was one of the best I have ever had, and I've had a few!More

Lovely place to return to, every time. A good walk from Oxford or a pleasant drive. Nice food each time, we like the good variety of pies. Only downer to our visit were the diners at next table being very LOUD for no reason, we...almost walked out, decided not to have dessert because of them.More

Last minute decision to attend. Mananged to reserve a table. Friendly on phone. Arrived to a warm welcome from two young members of staff. Service was a good pace and the young man that served us did so with a smile, was professional, and extremely...friendly and helpful. Food was good. Do not expect five star restaurant food. This is traditional pub grub. Portion sizes are very good for what you are paying and it was tasty. Few cobwebs and decor feels a bit dated l but otherwise we really enjoyed the evening and would recommend. Can't comment on toilets or any garden area as these weren't used.More

Very friendly service and an excellent pint of Guinness. High quality pub fare; I had the scampi and chips and my wife had the veggie roast which was excellent. We'll be coming back. Also very good value.
