We were taken here by a local friend and were so pleased to have found it. The restaurant specialises in Espetada, beef on a skewer, although there is also chicken skewer. 5 of us shared 3 beef skewers along with chips, fried maize and salad and what a memorable meal it was, tender and tasty beef fillet which melted in the mouth. The place was mainly filled with locals which is always a good sign. Staff are friendly and helpful and service is excellent. It's not easy to find but well worth seeking out.

We were delighted to see so many locals having a dinner here. Service was friendly and fast. Beef skewers were extremely tasty! They are this place's expertise. If having dessert, choose something from the "other desserts" -page since these are home-made. I had passion fruit pudding, which was tangy and tasty. I can warmly recommend this place if you want some simple but delicious local beef

Great Food - Not To Be Missed

Firstly, you really do need a car to get to this restaurante as it is outside Funchal but the trip up the winding roads is worthwhile. Also, despite some reviews that say vehicle parking is difficult to find, there is a large car park behind the restaurant up the hill. We had no problem finding a space at 6:30pm on a Saturday evening. We were shown to a table without a reservation. I did try to book ahead but the number I dialed just had a recorded message in Portuguese, but I also believe you cannot make a reservation by phone or email anyway. Our waiter was kind enough to suggest we not order too much food as usually one espetada was sufficient for two people and we could always order more later if we wished to. My wife had a 600gr T-Bone steak which for a non-red meat eater was brave, but she really enjoyed it and the espetada was tender and full of flavour too. The restaurant has a lot of tables and was virtually empty when we arrived but within the hour the place was full with people waiting outside. Mostly local clientele it appeared but then that is always a good sign to me. Definitely recommended and two third’s the price we paid the previous night. We returned a few days later when we thought it would be a little quieter, which it was, but it was still busy for a Thursday evening.

It’s all about the skewers!

We arrived at 7pm, only a few tables in we sat by the window ‘to make it look busy’ and commented that we didn’t need to bother reserving a table looking around at all the empty space… wrong! Within the hour it was rammed! Apparently always April & December it’s full every night. Our waiter was Joel who actually was excellent and a superb waiter, I got the impression from seeing the other waiters serving other tables that he was a cut above all the rest. You come to this restaurant for the skewers, and they don’t disappoint, good value for money and very very good. We had chicken and beef altho in hindsight I would probably have just gone for 2 beef as it was so good. Two skewers was enough for 4 of us with side dishes. Overall very good VFM, super quick service and a great vibe - it’s easy to see why this place is mega popular.

Unique and Tasty Experience

This restaurant is a little outside Funchal and parking is challenging but it's a great experience. The concept is skewered BBQ meat hung tableside with simple sides. It's well-priced, tasty and filling. We visited in October 2022 and were one of the few non-Portugese speaking tables. No reservations and large dining room fills quickly but tables turn over reasonably fast so worth the wait.

Authentic and highly recommended by locals

Keen to experience as many authentic meals as possible during our visit to Madeira we asked tour guides, taxi drivers, shop staff etc for their restaurant recommendations. All of them had Santo António at the top of their list! The famous 'espetada' hanging kebabs are the specialty here and did not disappoint. An amazing selection of local and Portuguese wines! And it just so happened to turn out to be the cheapest meal of our holiday. Don't miss out on what the locals seem to rave about!

Very good local cuisine

Visited on a Friday evening. We arrived early and so could get a table - while this is a large restaurant it fills up very quickly as it is so popular. We had the beef skewers which were very tasty and tender. This 2as with fries, salad and fried maze cubes. The food was simple but delicious. We had the house wine which was good. The service was efficient. The food and wine is very good value. This is a very good restaurant, serving very good local cuisine..... Worth the trip out of Funchal - but get there early.

Estepada done right for 50 years

In the words of Craig Revill Horwood: "Fab U Lus" Stupendous estepada in a mountainous setting. We ate out around the area of Madeira gardens hotel for 4 nights . We spotted this utter gem on a "where do locals eat " blog. It was incredible. The beef was so so tender and flavoursome. The accompanying side dishes were well prepared and simple. It has an extensive wine list of Portuguese and Madeiran wines. I asked the waiter for a recommendation and he came in with a pretty low prices bottle of liquid gorgeousness. We took a cab to the restaurant and it turns out our cabbie had been going there for years and chose to stop and have his dinner there while we ate! It's a must try

Espetada at it’s best!

Had bone-in espetada, easily the best espetada I’ve had (and I’ve had a lot). The milho frito was done to perfection. Great wine list, we had a lovely red at €22 but you could spend €980 on a bottle if you wanted to be flash and have the cash. Finished off with a delicious poncha. The restaurant is fun and vibrant, it’s really busy but service is slick, friendly and attentive. Ample parking and easy to reach from Funchal. A place you want to be! I am a carnivore, but if I could fault the restaurant, it would only be to include some fun options for my vegetarian friends.

Famous restaurant for "espetada madeirense"

We went for dinner on a Friday. The restaurant don't accept reservations and the waiting line was big. We waited 45 minutes for a table. After sitting the service was really quick and professional. We ate bolo do caco and espetada madeirense with fries and salad. The meat was on point!

Best Restaurant in Madeira - MUST VISIT

It is a little out of the way, set high on a hillside overlooking Funchal, but absolutely worth the trip! The portions are enormous, the service is delightful, the prices are fantastic and the beef skewers ("espetada" in Portuguese) are absolutely to die for. This was the best beef I have ever had outside of Japan. We liked it so much that we went back day after day. If you want traditional Madeiran food, particularly espetadas, you MUST come here.

Favorite meal in Venice

This stunningly beautiful restaurant was run by a highly-observant and caring professional, which guaranteed perfect service. The food was delicious, the atmosphere soothing and romantic, and incredible food. Italy has lots of incredible food, but thanks to the staff, I think you can count on a beautiful memory here. In the end, it was our favorite meal in Venice. 6 stars!

Great food, shaming service

The food - when we got it - was great. Delicious skewers, and the milho frito was the best I’ve had in Madeira. Unfortunately front of house wasn’t able to deliver on the promise of the kitchen. One of our party was left waiting for over an hour for their food, while the rest of us waited and then started eating as food got cold. Things go wrong, especially in service industries - what matters is service recovery; and how things are ‘made right’. They weren’t. Brusque staff who seemed largely focused on getting us out, having ruined a birthday meal. Would I come back? Good question. I don’t think so. There are lots of great restaurants in Madeira, and for me while the food does matter, the overall experience is what really counts. At Santo Antonio I didn’t feel like I was what mattered or that the front of house staff cared. What a shame.

So tasty

Fantastic food- cannot be faulted. The meat was perfect and delicious. The sides were so tasty, even a fairly simple salad tastes amazing. Our 3 teens loved it too. Go for the fresh puddings for dessert - we were initially disappointed when we seen the frozen store bought options but the home made puddings perked up our opinion

A piece of Paradise on earth

This place has been suggested by different trusteble locals and they were obviously totally right. Have chosen some meat skews and found them tasty, aromatic and particularly tender. Rich sides were coming along the mains. Quick service and honest prices. Impossible finding a single defect.
