There seem to be two entries for the same place, one with this name and one with the same name and addition of “Monica’s tavern”. I won’t repeat what I already wrote there, check it out. But this is a great place and well worth...a visit.More

An atmospheric taverna set in the heart of the village. Serving tasty traditional Greek food. Always tasty. The service is always with a smile and friendly. I love this little place inside, outside in the garden or at the front of the taverna. Always a...good experience. And during summer there is a live music evening every Wednesday. What us there not to like...More

The taverna is the perfect place to experience very good traditional Greek food in an amazing atmosphere. It is located in the small village of Gavalochori where you can also find a nice shop for local handicrafts. The food is special and the menu varies...a bit from time to time. We so enjoyed going there with our group of two families with two small children who got high chairs - the service was very considerate and nice. We totally can recommend visiting this taverna - we've been there three times during our two weeks in Vamos, a village nearby, and so enjoyed it every single timeMore

Monica’s is a very popular restaurant in the area. We’ve eaten there several times in the past, and it’s been good. This time however, the staff let it down badly. There were two people serving, I think one was English. We’re all for a relaxed...evening and being allowed to relax and get on with the meal in peace, but we (and many other tables) were ignored for large periods of time. One waitress stood talking to fiends on another table in the main courtyard for 20 minutes, then again for 15 minutes. Plates were emptied and piled up by guests on other tables. The other waitress was inside. Neither of them walked past our table for 30 minutes to check if everything was okay. Patrons took their money into the restaurant to pay their bills because they were being ignored. When our bill came, we were overcharged and had to get an item that we hadn’t had removed from the bill. We’ve eaten in restaurants all across the area for many years, so we’re well accustomed to the relaxed Cretan style. Monica’s needs to be careful that they don’t attract a reputation for this. Staff are everything to places like this, and should be friendly welcoming and attentive. The staff last night were far from that. The food was great, particularly the lamb shank.More

We loved eating at Monica’s friendly taverna where the food was home cooked and an absolute pleasure to eat. The garden at the back was a perfect spot to sit in. The whole atmosphere was so typically Greek. A number of Monica’s children helped out...in the restaurant and they were an absolute credit to her. We loved seeing the big board full of the day’s specials and particularly like the feta and pepper dip and the courgette flowers. You may want to book as it gets quite busy.More

We have returned here year after year and twice this time and the food is always excellent. The bekre meze and stifado are our favorites. and the food is always reasonably priced. The service is always very good and run by Monica who always seems...to remember us. Atmosphere in evenings is wonderful and we will be back next year.More

We all loved this restaurant, the food was amazing and even though we were spread over 3 tables (we were 10 in total), the staff was super attentive and fun and didn't mind us talking between tables a bit. The lamb shank and rosemary pork...were delicious, as was the shrimp saganaki. Lovely atmosphere and delicious apertif drink at the end that ended up being the start of a huge night partying at our villa, so we'll all remember this place and our dinner very fondly!More

Back here again and this is such a lovely restaurant in a pretty garden setting. Instead of Boureki which i have enjoyed before it wasnt on the blackboard so tried Feta Fornou which was delicious. Warm feta cheese over a kind of pepper ratatouille. Lots...of veggie options for us and friendly service. Hope they do ok in this difficult year, i hope to be back.More

What a great find. This taverna was our favourite restaurant during our two week stay. The food was consistently good, I thoroughly recommend the Greek salad and the lemon chicken and the house white was delicious. We ate here about 8 times and it never...disappointed.More

We went on a busy Saturday night back in September and after having being ignored by the other main restaurant in the village anything here would have been a bonus. They were absolutely packed but managed to squeeze us in. We had no complaints about...the food or the service and overall a very pleasant experience. Writing this 2 months later I can’t recall what we had to eat; the food was good but clearly not unforgettable The village itself is extremely popular and this restaurant provided a menu slightly less authentic that other places in Crete but with a lot of choice so that there was something for everyone. Reasonably priced, as with most things on the island. A nice courtyard setting meant it was an enjoyable eating experience and I’d come back (to the restaurant and the village) but perhaps not on a weekend next time...More

This is a gorgeous family run taverna in a pretty little village that just so happened to be walking distance from our villa, and was recommended by the owners. We were lucky with the weather, last week of October, so were able to take advantage...of the tables on the terrace among the trees. The menu is on a blackboard, English version available, and the owner and staff speak fluent English. We selected a few things from the menu, and both times had more than we could eat for around E50 for a family of 4 including drinks (fresh orange for the kids, house wine for the adults). Dishes we sampled included a lovely fresh Greek salad, giant beans in tomato sauce, stuffed courgette flowers, pork with rosemary, a traditional pork stew, large grilled shrimps and local sausages. My daughter loved the custard pie and the rest of us had a scoop of ice cream - it was nice to be able to just have a little something sweet at the end of the meal. Beware the free raki that comes after the meal - the first night we had extra wine but the second time we refrained in anticipation! The raki comes with a lovely plate of Turkish delight. I'm returning to the area with friends next year and can't wait to share Monica's place with them.More

Best restaurant in Gavalochori (we've tried others in 2018 and 2019) in a nice and cosy backyard surrounded by green plants and a huge tree. The Cretan food is mastered by Monica's team. As French nationals, the service seemed too long to us sometimes (we...had dinner there several times) but eventually we got by living the Cretan slow life ! ! Monica has opened in the course of August a very nice tableware shop just accross the taverna where you can find many ideas to bring back presents. Definitively the place to go !More

We followed a recommendation to visit Gavalianos. It is a little off the beaten track, in a tiny village, on the square. It is delightful in every way. The menu is almost all local - and all amazing looking and tasting. We we’re struggling to...pick what to eat. Our waitress - who we found out hailed from London but moved to Crete aged 4 - did a great job taking us through the menu. The decor is chic village style, nicely lit and the menu’s are presented in big boards - if it’s not priced they do not have it that night. Not a pizza or gyros in sight - just great village style cooking. Wonderful atmosphere, I can see why we were recommended it.More

... and always will. The owner is a wonderful woman, the waitresses (all beautiful and charming girls) are amazing, food & wine are great, the atmosphere is perfect – you have to love it! Sometimes there is music in the evening – especially in these...nights it is even more atmospheric. Right over the street Monica (the owner) opened a small shop where you can buy unique & handmade souvenirs (I love my earrings and my litte ceramic plates). We're looking forward to our next visit!More
