About
The Guilford Country Store has always been a local landmark in the town of Guilford, Vermont. Founded in 1817, it has seen the town through almost two centuries of changes. In 2010, it had a brief period where it was closed as a business, but Guilford saw to it that their beloved store would not be closed for long. The Friends of Algiers Village Inc., a non profit orginization focused on maintaing the integrity of the Guilford community, brought together a grand fundraising effort over the course of three years. Finally, the doors reopened in the summer of 2013 under the new management of Mark and Suzanne Tessitore, a local couple. The renovation has created a friendly local store environment that offers both indoor and outdoor seating areas in which to enjoy a meal from our deli, or just relax, have a cup of coffee, and surf the web. We sell everything from bait, to ice, to pesto pasta, to mosquito repellant, we have all your lunch and grocery needs so you don't have to drive all the way to Brattleboro! We'll greet you with a smile, take your sandwich order, and even bring it to you as you chat with your friends. Fresh produce is on the way, with local produce in the form of blackberries already on our shelves. We are looking into having a weigh station set up as hunting season rolls around. We will also be selling hunting and fishing licenses for your convenience. Fishing gear will also be stocked as soon as possible. The Guilford Country Store has been revamped and revitalized and we are ready to serve you. Stop in and check it out!

We arrived at the cafe shortly before opening time and there was already a lineup. Mostly locals, which tells a lot about a place. Warm greetings upon entering, apologies from the head chef that the fresh baked pastries were still coming out of the oven, a nice chance to wander the shop and see the local products for sale.
We both ordered steel cut oatmeal which was topped with a huge handful of wild blueberries and brought to our table in the small dining area. Delicious. Great coffee and we couldn’t resist trying a few of those wonderful, still warm pastries. Chocolate croissant for me, a lemon Danish for him and a gigantic oatmeal raisin cookie for the road. Which didn’t make it very far through the scenic countryside.
What a lovely place to stop. I want to go back!

We have made this our “must stop” cafe whenever we are traveling between Vermont and CT. It’s a short hop off 93, easy to locate and easy to access. Excellent food!!! Home made soups, chili, wide variety of delicious sandwiches with a friendly staff/team. Lovely dining area if you want to eat in, great coffee, excellent baked goods, muffins, etc. and vegan options are ample. Yesterday we had the coconut tomato soup that was excellent along with cheddar, apple, Turkey and honey mustard sandwich!! Yum!! We can highly recommend.

Stopped in to get some coffee and muffins with friends. The store was nice and the coffee and baked goods delightful. The cashier was really friendly and kind. She had a nice sense of humor and left us with a smile as we got back on the road. Nice to a friendly face on the road.

We were returning home and needed a place to eat that would be decent food, not too pricey, and have quick service. Nothing in Brattleboro seemed to fit the bill, but instead of hitting Route 91, we decided to wander down Route 5. With the number of cars out front of the Country Store we thought it might be a winner, and it was. The atmosphere is quaint and lovely, the staff friendly and helpful, and the food well-prepared and delicious. My husband ordered the "Godfather" and I got the Chicken salad of the day which was Tarragon. Both sandwiches were flavorful without being over-powering; two of the best sandwiches we've had in a restaurant in a long time. The food came quickly and was relatively inexpensive. A delightful find that we will go back to during our trips to and from VT.

Driving home to Connecticut from the Killington area on the back roads we stopped at the Guildford Country Store based on TripAdvisor reviews. It is a fairly typical country store but they have a nice cafe area as well as the shelving and counter. This is a family affair in which the husband and wife are working and teenage daughters there as well.
We had delicious soups. A vegetarian split pea that somehow had the smokey flavor of the ham that was not there and a very nice clam chowder. We each also had a Cheddar grilled cheese sandwich.
Do not leave without trying their large and delicious cookies.

This is just a short drive from Castlemaine and is always on the list for a casual coffee or a light lunch. The team behind the counter seem to love what they do and always have a smile. Lots of locals gather there and enjoy their coffees. When in Castlemaine make sure you take the 10 minute to the Guilford Store. It's great.

I don't know what happened to the Waldens, but I've been going to this restaurant ever since it opened, usually 5 mornings a week. Whether it's Mark, John, or Jackie at the grill, my egg sandwich is always cooked to perfection. Also, their soups, other sandwiches, and deli case items are exceptional. We are fortunate to have many great restaurants in the Brattleboro area and this is one of them. And to top it all off, you couldn't find nicer owners, Mark and Suzanne, and their entire staff.

We use to love this place and my husband goes here to get breakfast sandwiches to bring home for weekend laziness because they actually cook the eggs to order instead of microwave eggs. The guy who runs the kitchen is awesome and his food is perfect every time. He is a really good cook. However, as of April 2017, they have this new assistant cook, we have sadly got him the last two times my husband has gone in on a Saturday morning. He does not seem to care how your food is cooked and is more interested in just getting it thrown in a bag and you out the door. My husband stressed eggs over light, it might be picky but we are paying for food to be made for us. If I can cook my eggs at home better than the guy I am paying to cook them, in my opinion, we have no reason to frequent your store. The eggs were not only overcooked they were fried beyond recognition, my sandwhich for $7.99 was all bun and lacking anything else. When I called the store back just to let the guy who runs the kitchen know the new guy needed som training, a young girl answered. Instead of apologizing or responding to my concerns she pointed out that one of the items I believed came with my sandwhich was actually an add on for an additional fee. She never addressed anything else and basically just wanted to tell me they were great and we as customers sucked. Not that she said that, but that was her attitude. So if you are a tourist I would skip this place because who knows you might get the guy who makes great food but you might get the guy who doesn't care. You might enjoy the experience or you might drop $40 bucks in the store for breakfast, coffee, drinks and treats and then be treated like you are the problem complaining. We won't be going back and we probably spend at least $100 bucks a month in that store. To be extra clear, for me, the new guy is new, he could have taken the feedback and learned from it. The girl focusing on the only point that she could to be "right" somehow and not giving the phone to a manager or even just saying she would let the head chef know is really the icing on the cake. I would have liked to feel that someone actually cared about my experience not treat me like oh well we got your money now go complain elsewhere. So now we are going to be going elsewhere. Who wants to pay $7 and up for an egg sandwhich anyway.

Valerie,
I am very sorry that you didn't have a good experience this occasion or in previous times. I felt that it was important that I responding to your review because I feel a sense of responsibility for all the actions that take place here, whether they be good or bad.
My wife and I strive to provide the best food, service and store environment that we can but I recognize that even in the best of establishments things can sometimes slip thru the cracks. We try to put a tremendous amount of care into everything we do from the preparation of the food, to the wrapping, to the presentation to the customer.
Our staff has always been instructed to pass the phone on to either of us when there is a customer who has something to express (whether it be positive or negative). It is not the employees responsibility to determine the best way to resolve a situation and they should turn the phone over immediately,
Obviously there needs to be some retraining for the front of house about phone etiquette and a discussion in the kitchen about taking more time and care in food preparation.
Two eggs on a roll is $3.15 with ham, sausage or bacon 1.00 and Vermont Cheddar .50
bring it to a total of $4.65. There are other add-ons that can contribute to the price increase such as avocado, arugula, tomato or sautéed onions or peppers.
You would have to add almost everything to an egg sandwich to bring it to $7.99.
I was there this day and I do remember the order which I believe was a pulled pork sandwich with 1 fried egg on top and a cheesesteak with 2 fried eggs on top. A pulled pork sandwich is $7.99 and with a fried egg that would add $1 and a cheesesteak is $8.50 and with 2 eggs that would make it about $10.50. Additional add-ons are similar to the breakfast sandwich with coleslaw, mushrooms, sautéed red peppers etc being a supp cost.
We love our regulars! Guilford is a very small town (2,000) and we try to maintain a warm relationship with as many customers and community organizations as we can. More than half of our patrons are local regulars whose order we know before they get to the counter! We hope that people, (especially people who are familiar with the store) would feel comfortable enough to approach either of us to express something that is on their mind.
Between my wife and I we are at the store 7 days a week almost from open to close. We are both on the floor all the time and available to discuss anything from prepared food ingredients or beer suggestions to politics or complaints.
I encourage you to come to the store and talk about this with us. We always try to take care of issues that arise and I am confident we can resolve this as well.
Best,
Marc Tessitore

We always forget this is so close by - and we're never disappointed with the food and service. Delicious sandwiches and salads, really friendly staff and a good place to catch up on local news.

The Guilford Country Store is quaint and cute and a great place to go if you want to learn history or get a chuckle from the locals. They have excellent food to eat in or take out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kale salad with hazelnuts and feta is excellent and Mark does a great chicken curry. The soups are always good to as well as the sandwich's. I highly recommend.

Just a short way south off Exit 1 in Brattleboro, this is THE place to go for a great variety of snacks, a bottle of wine, terrific breakfast and lunch items made to order, take out for dinner, coffee and homemade sweets, groceries, organic eggs, a meeting with neighbors, local crafts (fine paintings, pottery, woven goods, etc.). There's always a good vegetarian option along with other creative and delicious menu items. If you go around 8 - 9 in the morning, you're likely to find several tables filled with locals enjoying a cup of coffee and each other's company. Marc and Suzanne provide a great catering service, too. While there are good places in nearby Brattleboro for breakfast of lunch, this is by far my favorite!

Mark & Suzanne are the new owners of this beautifully renovated General Store. Favorite of locals for good reason; they make their own tastey soups, salads and specialty sandwiches. All healthy & lots of local goodies including awesome muffins & cookies. Staff very friendly, on old Rt. 5.

Best sandwiches around - I love the veggie with everything and tarragon chicken. The deli case is full of healthy, fresh, home-cooked food - great for a take-out dinner. And, did you know they cater???
