When you think wine pairings you usually expect expensive and snobby. Not here. In the idyllic setting of Arhannes town square, the owner took us through most of the wines of the region with an infectious passion that left me excited to visit the local...vineyards and, yes, a tad drunk. All this, with dinner, for 25 euros each.More

Bakaliko is the place to be. The food is bursting with freshness and flavour, the service is exceptional and quick, and the atmosphere is fun and vibrant - all thanks to Zsuzsa and Giorgos! 😁 The menu is really varied, and they cater for every...taste and dietary requirement. Also, there's always something new and surprisingly tasty, let it be a dip, a chutney or a different take on a long time favourite, like mashed potato. Taste some wines and take time to look around the shop (the shelves are full with herbs, different olives, spreads, oils, vinegar, tea, cheese, meats and so on) and do some oil tasting too! Definitely visit Bakaliko!More

Archana is definitely a village worth visiting, a lovely tree lined square and local shops and restaurants. We had a terrific day at Bakaliko learning some Cretan cooking in Susanna's kitchen in the morning, which we then duly ate for lunch. Manuela talked us through...Cretan/Mediterranean diet and also introduced us to local wines during lunch. Great food and a lovely day. Susanna & Manuela thanks for your hospitality and good luck at university in UK Manuela!!More

Can’t recommend this place highly enough. The food was stupendously good with generous portions and exceptional value. The proprietor served us the dishes his wife cooked. Friendly and knowledgeable about the local produce. We ended up buying the white balsamic vinegar as it was so...good. Try the grilled cheese with aubergine. - simply amazing but all the dishes we tried were top notch.More

We were on a day trip to the area from Megala Chorafia, Chania, this week and chose to have lunch here while ambling through the attractive square. What a great choice we made! We were warmly welcomed, expertly served and totally wowed by the food....Bakaliko will draw us back whenever we are in the area in the future. Thank you!!More

My husband and I visited Bakaliko back in August when we were in Archanes, which is the village my grandfather grew up in. Bakaliko did not disappoint in terms of Cretan hospitality and food quality. We had a delicious dinner and then lunch the next...day. I wanted to go again for dinner the next night, but we decided to give another restaurant nearby a try, and I spent all of dinner wishing I was back at Bakaliko! The service was also excellent and server was thoughtful in helping us choose the right wine pairing for our meal, even bringing more out for us to try. Since I am Greek- American and grew up with many of the traditional heavier Greek dishes, I was delighted with the variety of Bakaliko and how inventive many of their plates were, which you cannot always find in a smaller Greek village. Highly recommend!More

We walked into this restaurant because we saw a sign for wine tasting. George sat us down and said he could walk us through various wines. The wine tasting included pretty generous appetizers as well. George was incredibly informative about the various wineries on Crete...and we were very lucky as we went in the off season and normally Bakaliko would be closed. We really enjoyed the Petali Liatiko and a Kthma Naoussea (i know..not from crete but it was so delish). Given his extensive collection of wines, we will be contacting George in the future to refresh our wine list when we need some wine from Greece.More

This restaurant is situated in a lovely square. Even though it was a very busy day the service was very fast. They served excellent olive pate, olives and bread for starters. We chose salad l, the chicken fillet and the pork and it was perfectly...cooked with healthy ingrentients. Highly recommended!More

Archanes is not really on the tourist trail in Crete but this place was recommended by one of the Liverpool FC-loving guys who run the a souvenir shop opposite the entrance to Knossos. It was about a 15 minute drive and seemed incredibly busy even...for a Saturday night. It turned out we arrived during a children’s festival in the town but we parked up and wandered around enjoying the music and vibrant atmosphere. When we found the right place the restaurant was delightful with excellent moussaka. Definitely recommended but probably best to avoid the annual children’s festivalMore

We visited Archanes at lunchtime on a drive around the area. We were pleased to find several tavernas in the centre of town and chose the Bakaliko because the menu looked interesting. We were not disappointed with the food. We had a tapas with a...selection of dishes including wrapped vine leaves, a selection of small pies, caramelised fig salad and olive fritters. Lovely food and great service. We would have no hesitation in returning next time we are in the area.More
