Lovely fresh food, great service and a fantastic atmosphere. We were greeted by Giannis, who spoke great English (as did all the staff, which made our lives so much easier, as my Greek is non-existant!)
We were seated in the courtyard, the service was great, with the staff very attentive and helpful. The drinks (wine, beers and soft drinks) were all nice and served lovely and chilled. My wife ordered wine, which they delayed until she ordered, such that they could match the drink to her meal choice (a nice touch I thought) - she enjoyed what they selected.
The food was served quite quickly and was exactly what we were hoping for, namely, beautifully cooked fresh and authentic Greek dishes. It was served simply, but portion sizes are decent and the price is very good (for five of us, with a couple of rounds of drinks, olives and bread, five main courses and two desserts came to little over €85).
The courtyard was bustling and provided a really good atmosphere, as there are about a half dozen or so establishments sharing the same space. We dined on a Sunday evening, so not sure if this contributed to how lively it was.
Only slight issue for me personally, are the cats and dogs that roam the area, but this is commonplace across Greece and absolutely wouldn't stop me going back again.

My husband and I visited Bakaliko back in August when we were in Archanes, which is the village my grandfather grew up in. Bakaliko did not disappoint in terms of Cretan hospitality and food quality. We had a delicious dinner and then lunch the next day. I wanted to go again for dinner the next night, but we decided to give another restaurant nearby a try, and I spent all of dinner wishing I was back at Bakaliko! The service was also excellent and server was thoughtful in helping us choose the right wine pairing for our meal, even bringing more out for us to try. Since I am Greek- American and grew up with many of the traditional heavier Greek dishes, I was delighted with the variety of Bakaliko and how inventive many of their plates were, which you cannot always find in a smaller Greek village. Highly recommend!

Archana is definitely a village worth visiting, a lovely tree lined square and local shops and restaurants.
We had a terrific day at Bakaliko learning some Cretan cooking in Susanna's kitchen in the morning, which we then duly ate for lunch. Manuela talked us through Cretan/Mediterranean diet and also introduced us to local wines during lunch. Great food and a lovely day. Susanna & Manuela thanks for your hospitality and good luck at university in UK Manuela!!

Recently enjoyed a wonderful meal and also tried some wine pairings. The owner George was very helpful and we checked out the shop afterward. Tried some olive oils as well. Needless to say, I ended up ordering some wine and olive oil to be sent to mainland Europe. It arrived in about a week! Definitely recommend eating here and also ordering from the online shop if you cannot go in person!

A family run restaurant, the owner and his son who attend the guests are super nice and with an extended knowledge about their local products, the mother leads the kitchen with unique skills. We (4 people group) went for food and wine tasting. Getting there we discovered that was also an option of doing Olive oil tasting! We had a blast, all the food we ordered came followed by a great wine chosen by the owner, we ate mezzes, wraps, main dishes and 4 different desserts. The owner said was a huge challenge for him to organize the sequence of plates and pairing wine, what he definitely did it very well.
It was our last meal after 3 weeks in Crete, we couldn't ask for a better experience than this to finish our trip. We're looking forward to be back soon for the cooking lessons they offer!

Can’t recommend this place highly enough.
The food was stupendously good with generous portions and exceptional value.
The proprietor served us the dishes his wife cooked.
Friendly and knowledgeable about the local produce. We ended up buying the white balsamic vinegar as it was so good.
Try the grilled cheese with aubergine. - simply amazing but all the dishes we tried were top notch.

The place is very inviting, and the reception was nice. The owner is very friendly, and very informative about the food and the wine. But the food was not to our taste, and didn't go down well. I ordered a quite expensive winemenu to taste the local wines, and I got an excellent explanation about each wine, but the size was a bit on the small side. It was a very restricted pouring, and I hardly got one glass all together.

Bakaliko is the place to be. The food is bursting with freshness and flavour, the service is exceptional and quick, and the atmosphere is fun and vibrant - all thanks to Zsuzsa and Giorgos! 😁 The menu is really varied, and they cater for every taste and dietary requirement. Also, there's always something new and surprisingly tasty, let it be a dip, a chutney or a different take on a long time favourite, like mashed potato. Taste some wines and take time to look around the shop (the shelves are full with herbs, different olives, spreads, oils, vinegar, tea, cheese, meats and so on) and do some oil tasting too! Definitely visit Bakaliko!

Excellent service.
We were staying in Archanes for only 2 nights. Visited Balaliko on the first night and asked if we could book a wine tasting experience for the following day.
We were really disappointed to hear that the restaurant would be closed as they had started having one day a week off following a very busy summer season.
However, after we had ordered a meal our server came back to us and offered to do a wine tasting session with wines paired to accompany our meal.
We happily accepted and had a fantastic meal during which we sampled 2 red,2 white and one sweet red wine.
Great food, wines and service

We booked to visit some wineries then stay in Archanes. When we read the reviews for here and realised we could try many local wines it made sense to reserve a table.
You can do wine tastings here but they need to be booked as the owner will spend a little time explaining them, but even if you don’t you can still try many different ones. He has around 60 that can be tried by the glass! I bought a bottle of our favourite as well.
The food menu had enough choice, his wife is a great cook, we really enjoyed the pork filets and the moussaka, particularly the moussaka.
It was a really enjoyable experience and very good value. We will be back.

At the recommendation of our tour guide, Panos from Tourist Guides Crete, we stopped at Bakaliko for a meal during a stay in Crete and our experience was truly wonderful on many different levels. First of all, the food itself was amazing; we would go back for that reason alone. However, the owner, George was kind enough to pair all of our dishes with a wine that complemented the dish and delivered a world-class experience. We enjoyed the wines he selected so much that we brought home several of them to share with friends. An experience you should not miss.

Discovered with our friends during a hike, we were very pleasantly surprised by the place
Good food and a very friendly welcome without waiting. The wine offered to us was excellent. To finish the meal a digestive was offered to us with some delicacies. Very good value for money.

We were on a day trip to the area from Megala Chorafia, Chania, this week and chose to have lunch here while ambling through the attractive square. What a great choice we made! We were warmly welcomed, expertly served and totally wowed by the food. Bakaliko will draw us back whenever we are in the area in the future. Thank you!!

There are 4 things that are a "must" when visiting Crete:
1) Knossos and the Heraklion Archeological Museum
2) Chania
3) Agios Nikolaous
4) the Bakaliko Restaurant in Archanes
If you love wine, reverse the order.
The wine selection is exceptional. The food is wonderful. And, Georgios (the owner) is a delight. The wine tasting he prepared for us (4 whites / 4 reds) was a oenophile's dream.

Excellent food and service. Fantastic Cretan select at good prices. Food is Cretan with a Hungarian twist. Innovation recipes served in the pleasant town square of Archanes about 15 mins from Heraklion.
