Found this pub to break our journey up from Newcastle to London. Very friendly staff only didn’t give 5 stars because cask ale was off. We ordered starters and mains. Just as well they forgot the starters because the mains were huge. We thoroughly enjoyed...our fish and chips and gammon. The chips were delicious. We would definitely recommend eating here. The menu is short but the food is great.More

This was a holiday visit on August 7th and chosen from trip advisor what can I say the food was amazing and large portions I have never seen a piece of fish or home made onion rings as big as Big in my life. The...service fantastic what a great young team. Tho only complaint was when we arrived we were told by the lady in the white top it was one way system and directed us through the bar which was compact and busy with no social distancing. Further diners arrived via the passageway at the ladies which was more acceptable. That aside great wee find!More

5 of us went for Christmas Day Lunch and it was absolutely fantastic. First of all we had a glass of Prosecco each. Then for the food... 2 of us had scallops for starters & they were cooked beautifully. 2 had beef for their main...course & said it was also cooked to perfection. 2 had traditional turkey & all the trimmings - tasty & 1 had lamb & was very happy with it. There was lots of veg which was cooked just right. Plenty of gravy & roasties. The desserts were amazing ! Profieroles, Baileys cheesecake! Topped off with a good cup of coffe with cream & mince pies. The staff were all friendly & the waitress service was attentive, nothing was a bother. The food all came out at the right time. It was a lovely afternoon. Will most definitely book for next year. Highly recommend!More

My family and I were the only ones eating on the day we visited the Black Horse (Saturday lunchtime). No one in before us or after us! It took over 40 minutes after taking our order to the food arriving. Our food order was not...complicated whatsoever, yes there were seven of us (including two children). Four of us had the same thing, hot beef baguette and chips, two chicken nuggets and chips and a burger and chips. I just can not understand what took 40 minutes to send our food out. When it finally did arrive, the hot beef baguettes had no gravy at all. So they were incredibly dry and hard to swallow. We asked the waitress for gravy, to be told it would take over 10 minutes to make some. Again, ten minutes to heat some gravy???? This establishment is in a prime location for passers-by, yet it was dead at peak lunchtime on a Saturday???More

I visited here because people kept saying it had been modernised and although I've lived in Spennymoor for over 25 years I've never been. We ate in the Pitman's grill, there were a lot of mining photos on the walls. The food was very nice...- brie and cranberry bap, chips and salad. The waitress had to ask if we could have the bap as this sandwich generally was served on a baguette! Considering this was a modernised pub I found it very dark with sticky tables. I generally check out the disabled toilets, but I couldn't see any. Perhaps if I'd asked they may have some. I think it might be another 25 plus years before I visit again.More
