First Impressions Checkers is a historic former coaching inn run by a great family team who hold a prestigious Michelin star. They offer classic French fine dining and luxury accommodation in the Welsh village of Montgomery. On arrival we were greeted by Sarah who was very welcoming and took us to our room. The rooms are very tastefully decorated and... More

This was our third stay. The menu is now a tasting menu only which I guess may put some diners off. This would be a great shame because the food is stunning. Pair that with friendly and efficient service and a relaxed and convivial dining room and you have a virtually perfect dining experience. The rooms are as good as... More

Very quickly - the food was unreproachable. flavours disciplined and very labour intensive. Cleverly used both seasoned front of house with locals to great effect all well trained attentive and confident. Very comfortable though busy. I loved the restaurant and the commitment to aiming for perfection. I would be looking for a second Michelin star!

Went for a one-night stay and had 6 course taster menu but with our own wine selection. It was a wonderful experience and the food was just superb. Room was clean and well provisioned; staff extremely pleasant and the whole place has a good ambience, very pleased that they do not feel the need to play canned music when people... More

We attended The Frenchman & the Farmers Daughters book launch last night. All the dishes on our tasting menu were featured in the book, each course had a corresponding page number, so it was amazing to be able to read about the ingredients and the method of creating the food as you are eating it! All the courses were delicious... More

stayed here for an overnight mini moon stop off during our whirlwind tour of Wales. Check in was smooth and the room we had was lovely , spacious, and clean. There was a good selection of teas and home made cookies and a fridge with milk in the room. We had a nine course taster menu and wine flight -... More

We went for a special occasion (our 20th wedding anniversary) and stayed overnight too. Our room was large and really nicely done, just what you'd expect for a classy "restaurant with rooms". The food is classic French and the clearly very talented chefs don't hold back on the cream or butter! In fact, that's probably my only (tiny) criticism of... More

If you like French culinary excellence of Michelin Star standard then you should give The Checkers in Montgomery a visit. The restaurant seats 20 to 30 and the 3 nearest couples to our table had driven :- A 200 miles from Hertford to eat there; B two and a half hours from Porthcawl ; and C all the way down... More
