The setting is beautiful, the interior traditional and welcoming, the food is good, the ale is excellent and the prices are good.... But the service was extremely slow and the seating arrangements were such that it felt as if at every table was there was business meeting. This was due to the size of the tables (too large), which tended to... More

Had both evening meal and also breakfast at the Lion Inn whilst doing the C2C walk. Evening meal was OK but could have been better with small serving and not much accompaniment.Breakfast on the other hand was very tasty and up to the standard that we had come to expect whilst doing the walk. Service in the evening was average... More

I took my mother and two friends to The Lion Inn to celebrate my mother's 82nd birthday. I have visited several times before and knew that I was guaranteed good food. I was not disappointed. We all enjoyed the meal which was excellent value for money but it was the old traditional English environment and the convivial atmosphere that really... More

One of my favourite places in the world. The rooms are lovely and the food is too, the portions are huge! Book a room well in advance though, especially bank holiday weekends.

Great place to have lunch. Especially if your really hungry. Portions must be based on the needs of the "walking visitors" who need to get a refill. Food wise it's great. The chips are real chips. Never had a meal there that I would grip about. Slight negative is they are slightly lacking in salad options. The staff are great... More

Had lunch today with family. The food is very nice and the portions of the mains really generous, as many people have already mentioned. I was glad that I ordered two starters instead, fishcakes (one, rather large) and mozzarella dippers. The lamb chops and hot chicken parmesan came recommended too. Sadly, no one had room for dessert!

Swept away with the amazing views where the Lion inn is situated. A oldy worldy pub on the inside, with traditional ales and the more recent up to date drinks if that's what your after. Extensive menu with large portions. I can imagine no matter what time of year you would visit this place, it would offer a warm welcome... More

I read a lot about the history of the Lion Inn and I was really looking forward to stopping here on our coast to coast hike. I was however somewhat disappointed that it was a huge tourist hub - not quite what I expected. Having said that, we enjoyed sitting outside, slightly removed from all the activity. We ordered food... More
