It's not particularly easy to find vegan food on a small island. If you're lucky there will be a token gesture, but usually there is nothing except chips, or a boring salad. When your body insists on refusing gluten, it's even more difficult! How welcome it was for us last year to discover Balance Bowl right on the front in Gzira. Fortunately it's still there, and we were welcomed back like old friends. The essence of Balance Bowl is healthy eating that tastes good and uses seasonal vegetables where possible. The buffet bar has a selection of salads and also four hot dishes, along with hummus, olives and bread. They ring the changes, so don't expect the same selection day after day. There is also a menu of staples such as burgers. But no chips! Tortilla chips are used instead, which means there isn't an aroma of stale deep fat frying lingering around. A fantastic array of cakes, some of them raw, will tempt you, along with your choice of coffee and plant milk. I always have a selection from the buffet, and my partner always has a Shroom burger. We both enjoy an organic cider with our meal. We are creatures of habit! The staff members are all friendly and you can see that they are happy to be there. Downstairs are small tables and a couple of counters to sit at. Upstairs you'll find an area where there is a selection of games to play whilst you chill out. There is breakfast bag seating, or a sofa, or a huge table. Do call in for a drink or a meal. I'm sure you'll be made to feel very welcome.

Coming across vegan food in Malta is difficult, but we liked this place and the food they offered. It's clearly a very popular place in a great location, and a good range of healthy food is offered too, including the Nutrition Bar. We'd definitely recommend this as a place to eat at if you're a vegetarian visiting Malta.

I struggled to get a decent plant-based meal choice anywhere in Malta until I discovered Balance Bowl. The staff made us feel so welcome. Shared a delicious bowl of Nachos for starters then I had a falafel and sweet potato burger. One of the owners gave me a 'Happy Cow' card with details of an app for easily finding plant-based restaurants, as well as a treat bag! It was a very happy dining experience from start to finish!

My daughter who is vegan treated me a non vegan to lunch here recently. What a lovely surprise, cute decor, friendly staff, varied menu and prompt service. The food we selected was delicious a wrap with lots of flavour in the filling and a burger. Both served with tortilla chips and dip. A very satisfying meal which shows that vegan , vegetarian dishes can be far from boring. Hope to return soon

We love this place! Not only because it’s the only truly vegan restaurant in Malta. They (at least one of the ladies running around) are always in good mood and welcoming. They always have some yummy specials on offer. Everything tastes fresh. ❤️ Nowadays, several restaurants provide separate vegan menus, but only vegan guys know what plant-based eaters like. We stop by every time we around gzira & hungry.

We’ve been to Balance Bowl a few times and every time it’s been amazing. Neither of us are vegetarian or vegan so we go there purely because the food tastes amazing and they come up with incredible flavours and food combinations. Their nachos are out of this world! Everyone there is very friendly, the service is always great and I wouldn’t say the wait is long considering how fresh everything is. The place has a relaxed atmosphere with comfy seating upstairs and a small selection of books and games you can use while you wait. Definitely worth going whether vegan or not!

Before travelling to Malta I did research on good vegan places to eat, and Balance Bowl was at the top of every list on every article and blog I read. On our day trip to Valletta we made a point to take a quick detour (a short and inexpensive Uber ride away) to visit Balance Bowl. I’m so glad we did, and it’s very easy to see why it’s consistently recommended as the best place to eat vegan in Malta. The restaurant itself has a lovely vibe, similar to other trendy vegan places I’ve been to across the biggest cities in Europe. We sat in the outside seating area which was great. The staff member who served us during our visit was warm, attentive and very friendly. The menu has a wide variety of vegan dishes inspired by many different world cuisines - I just wish I could have tried a bit of everything! We got a complementary appetiser of bigilla with some bread, and it was a lovely touch to give us the opportunity to sample a traditional Maltese food! I had the ‘cauliflower no steak’, which is a marinated cauliflower steak presented beautifully on a pea houmous with tomatoes and seeds, and crowned with delicious breaded and fried oyster mushrooms. My husband had an imitation chicken burger with loaded fries. The portion sizes are massive, very generous and filling. My cauliflower dish was so tasty and definitely Instagrammable! We got a slice of cake each to takeaway (we were too stuffed to eat them there and then) - I had chocolate hazelnut (which tasted like a Kinder Bueno in cake form) and my husband had a carrot cake which was very nicely spiced. Overall a wonderful experience and I’m so glad we got the opportunity to eat in the best vegan restaurant in Malta!

This restaurant is better of many other non-vegan ones in Malta. The food is very high quality, super tasty but never “heavy”. They recently changed menu and I must say that the new one is a bit more expensive but very interesting and original. It’s totally worth the expense! My fav are: no schnitzel, no calamari, cauliflower steak. To die for! Thank you Balance Bowl, keep going!

I like everything about this place. The food is amazing. If ethics and philosophy is important to you (and you are a vegan/veggie fine diner) then this quirky little is a must visit. The exceptional list of reviews that Balance Bowl has is quite understandable to saty the least. Filiz and her team will always go that extra mile to make sure you remember this place with fond memories

I was recommended this restaurant by a kayak instructor in Gozo, and I can't thank him enough. The food was superb, the portions were positively large, and the service excellent. They even served me a complimentary starter of pate made from Maltese broad beans, which was delicious. If I come back to Malta, I am definitely going to return here at least once. If you're vegetarian or vegan, don't miss this restaurant!

Had a delicious (and filling) Buddha Bowl and a smoothie. Loads of gluten free options on the menu (which has been difficult at other places), and the waiter knew exactly what the substitution would be. If I was here for longer, I'd definitely go back!

We loved this place so much we went twice but blink and you’d miss it. Look out for the ‘Plant Based Kitchen’ outside. The first evening we had the I’m Alive Bowl and the Pyzy (potato balls stuffed with mushrooms) on the recommendation of the waiter. Second visit we had the Buddha Bowl and the No Bacon Cheese Burger. All dishes were excellent and the portions were very generous. In fact we were offered a doggy bag for our leftovers to cut down on food waste. We also really like the ethos of this place. It supports the LGBTQI+ community.

Wonderful fresh food in a very friendly atmosphere. Attracted by the board outside "Give Chick Peas a Chance". We went in and came a cross a haven of delicious vegetable based food amongst an ea of rabbit and fish based menus! Even if you just want a break from the fish and meat it is woth a visit. I ate my favourite dish on the whole of Malta and Gozo there a cauliflower, ginger and mustard seed soup. The rest of the meal was fantastic too! You don't have to be vegan to eat there so do yourself a favour and visit!

We had an amazing meal at Balance Bowl! Both starters and main courses were excellent and probably some of the best vegan food we have had! The oyster ‘calamari’ was a particularly highlight. Would massively recommend. The ferry from Valletta was only €2.80 return and it was completely worth it for the food!
