Upon research by a fellow traveller, this izakaya (Japanese pub-eatery) was quite the delight to the senses! Covertly hidden amongst the nightlife of the bustling city, we eventually found our intended destination after circling the block for a pre-dinner warmup to really synthesise the palate....Once entering you are Immediately hit with a intriguing and delightful waft of aromas. We took some time discussing what we were trying to read and awaiting more guests so so we unfortunately missed out of the all you can drink 7 course option (2 hour seating times so don’t be late because they are strict!) However we did end up getting a variety of dishes to share. I personally loved the “Oden” (Japanese radish) it was different to anything I’ve had before in terms of texture but it somehow reminded me of a leak soup my mother makes at home. “Flaming mackerel” was also a phenomenal dish to be savoured! Compliments to the chef, the one night dried chicken was also delicious!More

The izakaya (between a bar and a restaurant) is for locals and a regular stop for many business people - I did not get the impression that much English was used here so if you can't go with Japanese-speaking friends rely on pictures and pointing....Drinks are good and food is exceptional - all types of Japanese (and some Chinese) served in relative small portions so you eat several types and order often.More

I’m much happier and more inclined to write nice reviews but we needed to pass on our thoughts following dining at Shirube tonight. We were presented with an extremely limited English menu, made worse when we could see what others were offered from a Japanese...menu. We were presented at the start with a small bowl of salad which we took as complimentary based on its size and the fact that we didn’t order it - we noticed another table of tourists receive the same offering. The food we actually ordered was good and the service adequate but the disappointment hit when we quizzed the extra 1000 Yen charge, only to be told it was for the salad. We had been keen to visit the restaurant based on research and reviews but would not recommend this place to any non- Japanese speaking diners.More

We were recommended this place and were not disappointed! The sashimi was tasty as was the noodles and mackrel. Restaurant was a little difficult to find as the name was different to the English name on here (follow google maps) - it had sheets out...the front to enterMore

Really fun bar, with stunning food. The shrimp and the sashimi were particularly good. The service was also great.

Fun Izakaya in lively Shimokitazawa. Service is friendly and fun, like many izakayas. Almost theatrical. They have English menus. About a quarter of the crowd seemed to be non Japanese....but restaurant didn’t seem touristy. They have a set meal option...but we went ala carts and...ordered up several plates of tapas. The flame seared mackerel lived up to the hype. The fried chicken was good too Certainly worth a visit. I believe there is charge for the salad they serve at the start of the meal and I believe smoking is allowed. Did not bother our group but may bother others.More
