What drew us here, for lunch en route to somewhere else, was the prospect of ordering the specialite de la maison: suet steak and kidney pudding, that famous dish of old England. Well, the pudding was the best yet, a feast of lean meat and rich gravy, and was promptly served with friendly, carefully- trained, unobtrusive expertise. What we had... More

Found this pub using good pub guide on journey to somewhere else. A great find! A thatched roof pub in an enchanted village with old thatched cottages. It was sunny so we sat outside and had lunch in the lovely garden out front (ample carpark at rear of people pub). We ordered s plough and lunch. Real ale and a... More

Take a stroll through one of the prettiest villages in all England and you will come upon one of its finest public houses and restaurants. We were fortunate enough to visit on a gloriously sunny day and sat out in the pubs cottage garden, cloaked in the perfume of roses and lulled by the gentle hum of bees. Everything about... More

Maybe a Monday night is not the best night to judge this (or any pub) by because we had high expectations based on the reviews that were not met. The pub is traditional in decor, the garden is pretty and the service friendly. The steak and kidney pudding was very good but the fish, originally advertised as plaice but corrected... More

The guy who served us was brilliant - and the chef very understanding of my dietry needs. Salmon moist and perfectly cooked - planning on going back. Dogs loved it - really lovely and unspoilt inside.

This local pub is the heart of the community and you can see why, with the locals all endorsing it. We went on the Queens Birthday weekend and were treated to live music which was a real treat. We ate in the restaurant part and highly recommend the food. Soufflé to start, steak and kidney pie...... does it get any... More

Have known this glorious Rockbourne pub for many years, although not visited for some time. Nothing changes & The Rose & Thistle is still a lovely unspoilt pub. Great food & ales with a fantastic homely atmosphere. All our party were most impressed.

First time I had eaten at this pub, I chose it as it had been recommended for providing a good selection of gluten free options. One of our party has to follow a gluten free diet and she wasn't disappointed with the choice. This was a meal for a family get together and the food was absolutely 5 star. I... More

Description
The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.
