Chose this pub to meet a fried as it was convenient distance from us both. (Thank goodness for satnav as ot easiest place to find, but worth the effort). Quiet day, being a Monday lunch but the Manager was very welcoming ad helpful. Immediately set up a tab, served drinks, provided menu while we sat by nice open log fire.... More

We were staying in the new forest for my dad's 70th and decided to go out for a nice meal in the evening. I called on the off chance to see if this place had a table for 9 and they were able to accommodate us in the bar area. I have to say, they made such a lovely effort... More

We stay in the West Lodge in Rockbourne and decided to have Sunday Lunch after a walk around Rockbourne. We arrived a midday and, although the pub is dog friendly, we sat outside as it was warm and sunny. The pub is gorgeous, Chocolate Box picturesque. We ordered the beef Sunday lunch and it was delicious! The service was quick... More

Everything a pub should be. After a couple of let downs in the New Forest, the Rose and Thistle came up trumps. Great village, building and atmosphere, customer facing staff effortlessly hitting all the right notes and delightful food. Did we like it? Hell yeah. Please please please would the owner kindly spread the word and train other eateries/pubs nationwide... More

Delicious food, good varied menu with daily specials, attentive friendly service in a traditional pub setting. The baked hake on a bed of creamed leeks was superb. Everything that lunch with friends should be. We will definitely visit again.

Too often we Brits accept a poor service to cost ratio; treat yourself to the opposite at this lovely pub. My wife and I were holidaying in the New Forest and stopped at the Rose and Thistle for a meal. We had an excellent evening. There are two rooms; one for dining and a drinkers/social part with less formal tables... More

We enjoyed the usual warm welcome from Chris and his team at the RaT. Beautiful lunch. Salmon cooked to perfection in a butter and chive sauce with crayfish. Moist chicken breast marinated in lemon and thyme with a garlic sauce and vine cherry tomatoes; devine. Pitch perfect vegetables: beetroot, carrots, courgettes and buttery potatoes. Boozy Irish cream chocolate mousse to... More

It is quite a small pub and we were a large group. We were seated in the bar area, which was busy. The staff were excellent though and very accommodating. The menu wasn't particularly inspiring, so all but two I think had the homemade burger, which was nice. Only one person had a starter and one person a pudding. I... More

This is a lovely, quaint old English Pub but serving the food you would expect from a high quality restaurant. Some unusual dishes such as Pigeon which was a welcome change and a beautiful selection of vegetable to accompany the main courses. Sweets were delicious and obviously homemade, Staff were very welcoming and attentive throughout our meal.

The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.
