We had a lunch here today. We order from the a'la carte, not from the lunch menu which is very reasonably priced. It is a little place with real ambiance. The cusine is Hungarian, but with a modern take. The home made squash and soordough...bread were great. Duck rillette amuse bouche, lovely whole, grilled trout, perfectly cooked chicken with smoked onion puree and home pickled vegetables. It was truly great after all that mediocre food we tasted. The service is relaxed and very friendly. The owner chef and server wife duo work great. Nice selection of wines too! Excellent!More
Hungary is all about the food but many restaurants are not exploiting the wonderful produce and the historic recipes. Here is the exception, no fuss, or trying to be modern just excellent Hungarian cuisine, with the best ingredients, served and cooked by the proprietors ensuring...no passion is lost.More
We are from Slovenia and we were invited to Gyula by my hungarian friend that is native from Gyula. He took us to this restaurant that serves just food from local farmers. Every course was accompanied by a different wine. The foods and wines were...excellent. We were hosted by my friend so we were not supposed to see the bill. But, I was curious and I have to say it was cheap for what we took. So, definitely, recommend it.More
We were looking for this restaurant but at first time we went over it of it without being noticed. The front of it was not stylish with beer logo, or big sign, it was dark green, with a small title "Patrióta". The enterieur was similar...to the outdoor feeling a little little oldish and quite dark.
But other hand it was worth the try. The menu is not long but enough. The meal, roasted duck leg with mushed potato was not a big portion but excellent quality. The duck roasted in his skin is one of my best, ‘melt-in-the-mouth’ , a MASTERPIECE.
The chicken breast in bread was also quite good. The breast was well done, not dried.
There was meal to the children also. The breaded pork was also well prepared and perfect for the children tastes.
The waitress was kind and patient with the children also. It was the best culinary experience in Gyula.More
The quality of the food/meal is near to the highest gastronomy level. The Hungarian foods are redesign by the chef. The raw material is always fresh and purchased from the district. They do not use deep-frozen raw material at all.
Empty restaurant, two tables are occupied inside, outside only one. The "waitress" simply told me there were too many orders (phone orders!) therefore they couldn't serve me and asked me to leave. I told her I am alone isn't there any solution and I referred to the almost empty restaurant. Her answer was no.
Congratulation! If a restaurant can't solve this "problem" it makes no sense to call it restaurant. The chef should cook for his family or his friends if he is able to do that.
As I have learnt from another posts on facebook this situation is very much usual so I suggest to avoid this place as much as you can!More
I come to Patrióta whenever I can, for dinner and even for daily lunch. Let's start with the worst: as this is a family business, don't expect extended opening hours. As I dine late, it is sometimes closed when I want to come.
The list...of bad things ends here. I am a seasoned traveller, been to many high-rated restaurants in the Basque Country and France, live around Barcelona, and Patrióta is cream of the crop. I am originally from Gyula, and when my friends come from abroad, this is the only place that allows me to show off our regional cuisine and makes me feel proud of my origins. The meals are excellently presented and surprising in taste. The service is professional with the elegance of the waitress being equal to the guest. The wines are great and unpretentious. This is not a wannabe-place, like many. This is an already-is place.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this place to those who are not afraid to experiment with tastes and want to savour locally-sourced food. If you are into wanting to decide what you want based on your experience with ordinary restaurants, you may find the dishes small or the service unfriendly. But I congratulate the owners for having set up such an excellent place and for always wanting to improve.
The picture here is from today's daily meal. 1200 forints, including soup, main course and water. Presented and prepared with the same care as the most expensive dish on the menu.More
