This soba restaurant serves amazing handmade Japanese soba noodles. You can get them hot or cold. I ordered the 3 tiered cold soba served 3 ways. The one with the raw egg was my absolute favorite!! The ladies that served us were all super nice and showed us the proper way to eat the soba noodles. We arrived after 1:00 and only had to wait for a few minutes to be seated. I was so impressed when they told me that this restaurant is 230 years old! Will definitely go back the next time I visit the Izumo Taisha Shrine. It is within walking distance from the shrine and we didn’t have any problems finding it.

Our knowledgeable relatives took us to a famous soba restaurant in Izumo, just a few blocks from Izumo-taisha. Arakiya specializes in soba, a noodle made from buckwheat, which is a seed, not a grain, and has high nutritional value. The soba noodles come in three stacked lacquer bowls. Each bowl can be seasoned to suit your taste. The broth-like sauce used with the soba has a delicate, pleasant flavor. Soba is served with a collection of pickled vegetables and condiments for the soba itself. Highly recommend it.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday before visiting Izumo Taisha. There was a slight line, but we only waited about 20 minutes, and it was totally worth the wait! I got the soba set that came with the tempura and zenzai (sweet red bean soup with Mochi). Which cost ¥1490. I also ended up getting an additional soba refill which cost ¥270. The soba was perfect, and the tempura was deliciously crispy and light. The set came with 2 bowls of soba, one with mushroom and grated daikon, and the other with a quail egg and sesame. The tempura consisted of eggplant, shrimp, and mushroom. Everything was amazing, though the portions were a little small. There is a certain way to eat the soba here. First, you put the toppings on your soba (scallion, spicy diakon, and nori). Then you pour on the soba sauce in the shape of の. Once you finish your first bowl of soba, you take the left over sauce and pour it in your second bowl. Once you finish your bowls, you pour the left over sauce in a cup of warm soba water (add additional soba sauce to taste). In conclusion, I would highly recommend this soba restaurant, and I will definitely be coming again.

I planned to visit the no 1 rated soba shop in Izumo but the shop closed at 2:30 that day due to kitchen maintenance. I asked the waiter to recommend one nearby and she told me Arakiya is her favorite and the taste is very good. It's really true. The shop signature soba is in a three tier bowl (三代). First pour the egg into the top tier and after finishing the soba, pour the remaining sauce into the second bowl with yam. Then so on to the last bowl with soba only. I have tried many famous soba shop before and eating soba in this way is new to me. In fact, it's very practical of not wasting anything. don't forget to buy home some dry soba. they are equally good.
