Tips for Renting a Car in Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale is widely known for its beautiful beaches, sunny weather, intricate canal system and contagious energy. Because of this, Fort Lauderdale is a popular tourist spot. While there are taxis and shuttles available throughout South Florida, car rentals in Fort Lauderdale are much more convenient and economical. Instead of waiting on shuttles or paying for expensive taxis, a rental car opens up a much wider area to explore — and South Florida is bustling with attractions outside of Fort Lauderdale Beach.
If you fly into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, finding a Fort Lauderdale rental car is a breeze. If you arrive at Terminal 1, simply follow the signs pointing you to the Rental Car Center (RCC). They will take you to the Concourse B pedestrian bridge, which delivers you to the RCC. If you arrive at terminals 2, 3 or 4, follow similar signs to a free shuttle bus pick-up area. It is located on the curb outside of baggage claim. Returning FLL rental cars works much the same way. Of course, there are plenty of off-site rental car centers, as well.
Nearby Attractions
With a rental car, you will be able to explore as much of South Florida as you want. Simply hop on 1-95 South to spend a day in Miami and/or Miami Beach and I-95 North to spend some time exploring Boca Raton and/or Palm Beach. Similarly, I-75 West crosses "Alligator Alley" through Everglades National Park. The Everglades is a great day trip for hiking and enjoying a family ride on an airboat. Of course, there is also plenty to do in Fort Lauderdale itself. Las Olas Boulevard is the main hub of activity, while Hugh Taylor Birch State Park offers various outdoor activities.
Fort Lauderdale Car Rental Types
Car rentals in Fort Lauderdale include economy, compact, midsize, full-size, luxury, SUV and more. Economy is the most popular rental choice, but it's also hard to pass up the chance to rent a convertible in Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale Rental Car Considerations
Age Limit: The minimum age to rent a car in Fort Lauderdale is 21, but a "young driver" surcharge will apply for drivers under the age of 25. Also, certain vehicles may only be available for rental by individuals aged 25 and over. There is no maximum age restriction in Florida.
Insurance: If your personal car insurance policy adequately covers you to drive any vehicle, you can use that to rent a car. If it doesn't, it's wise to purchase rental car insurance through the rental car company. Rental cars are insured at the Florida state minimum, but this usually does not provide sufficient protection.
