Beautifully sited beside a lake, it pioneered the inclusion of self contained suites for noble guests. A hexagonal tower house ranged around a central courtyard, which was a unique design in England. Substantially updated by the staunchly Roman Catholic Arundell family after 1570, the castle saw much fighting during the Civil War. In 1643, the 61 year old Lady Arundell, with garrison of just 25 soldiers was forced to surrender it to 1,300 Parliamentarians after a 5 day siege. The abandoned castle became a romantic ruin, with a fantasty Gothic grotto in the woods. Child friendly and dog friendly less

Founded in 888 by King Alfred the Great, Shaftesbury Abbey was the first Benedictine nunnery only for women. The museum brings to life the story of the Abbey and its inhabitants with dramatic displays of medieval stonework and an interactive virtual tour. There is a free audio tour, printed guides in European languages and a children's trail and activities. less
