This is a video of our trip in January to Yuli Township in Hualien County. We visited a farm with friendly people where you can learn making scones and wheat beer, we had lunch at the Yuli Noodles restaurant in Yuli, and we went biking on the Yufu Bikeway south of Yuli, a very enjoyable ride. During January you will see a lot of rapeseed feels, great for photo taking! :)
Jiufen is one of the top tourist attractions in northern Taiwan. Visitors come to walk up and down the narrow Old Street to eat at some of the local-specialty eateries and buy souvenirs, and take pictures of the very scenic views of the Northeast Coast. For those who have time and energy, hiking up the nearby Mt. Jilong is highly recommended. From the mountain you have even better views, including of Jiufen village itself.
On this trip we visited the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, a great place to learn about the local word carving art and see some outstanding sculptures. We also had a look at Sanyi's old street (nice murals) and drove to Shengxing Railway Station, where we had a nice Hakka meal, and further south to the ruin of Longteng Bridge. Finally we drove north to Tongluo's modern Hakka museum (very in informative). This was a one day trip from Taipei (we drove our own car).
