Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
Always love using the Trams in the CBD area. It's so convenient, easy to hop on & off, multiple stops all day long, don't have to wait too long and best of all its FREE travel in the CBD area. What more could you ask for!
Staff able to assist with any query no matter whether it be large or small. Maps aplenty along with an abundance of leaflets available dependent your interest levels. Very well situated for any visitors.
Recommend a guided tour as you will find it more interesting learning about the history of the Old Melbourne gaol. We paid an extra $5 for a self guided tour with headset that gave some info. Plenty of information throughout touring. Very eerie to learn of the fate of some of the prisoners.
The watch house tour is included in...
Eau de Vie at Malthouse lane. One of my favourite bars in Melbourne CBD. Definitely one of the hardest finding bar as well :) love the duck liver parfait and espresso martini. Always good to drink here and enjoy the best music in Eau de Vie.
I wanted a light, small early dinner and usually, Spanish restaurants are geared to late eating, but not here. They fit the Australian early dining options. The service was excellent but I was the only one there for a while. I had a wonderful Spanish dry, flavoursome red and had two tapas-pinchas dishes, croquets and calamari. Both were excellent, with...
Had a delicious breakfast at Sally’s while staying in Melbourne cbd for work. I highly recommend the poached eggs, asparagus, prosciutto and hollandaise sauce! Coffee was great too. Staff also really friendly - all round great experience.

Staying here is such a wonderful experience. The staff go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The rooms are excellent quality and the bed is the most comfortable bed I think I've ever slept in. Would definitely stay again!
Thanks to all the staff for a memorable birthday visit. They went above and beyond to make our visit special. Lovely rooms (although some street noise), comfy bed, good bar, excellent staff service.
Would definitely stay again
Everything was satisfactory. Room was well maintained and everything was functional. We stayed in the room with a park view and was pleasant. The hotel is located near the CBD, but far enough to not be in the hustle and bustle. Surrounding is quaint and peaceful with a few cafes and restaurants along the street. Flagstaff is one of the...
I love this hotel. I have been coming here for years and would take a lot of convincing to change my mind when considering staying anywhere else when in Melbourne.
The Alto is my choice of accommodation, whether it’s a girls’ weekend away with my bestie, a romantic getaway with my husband or a shopping weekend in Melbourne with my...
