The formerly prosperous mining industry of Pingxi District has presently bid its time of black gold farewell, washing off its glories and returning to simplicity, it attracts travelers to stay by picking up a downshifting pace.
If you like the mountains and water, come seek out the secluded Wanggu Waterfall and the majestic Shifen Waterfall; if you are a railroad scene enthusiast, there is no harm in taking the train along the Pingxi rail branch line and making random stops in the unique surrounding stations. Quaint Jingtong Station and Serene Wanggu Station calm the mind for relaxation. Shifen Station and Shifen Old Street with its distinct scene of “a train passing through the front doors” and nostalgic old street makes every corner worthy of savoring.
You must experience releasing sky lanterns when visiting Pingxi. Write down your wishes and let the sky lantern bring them slowly to the sky. There is also the one and only “Sky Lantern Police Station”, not only with daily dazzling light shows but also offering customized “Police Wishing Sky Lantern” so tourists can hand draw images or writings and display them on LED sky lanterns.
Nice place, many shops along the railway, mostly selling sky lanterns. We did not put any sky lanterns this time round, but we saw many people doing so and posing for photos on the railway track. Will be a nice experience. Can try the peanut ice cream wrap at the old street, nice!
Getting there from Taipei main station takes...
"3 suspension bridges on the way to the waterfall are exciting "

About 30min walk from the station.
It’s called Niagara in Taiwan, not so special but still very powerful waterfalls. There’s a walkway around the waterfall. It takes you to the several nice view spots. Most people just stop walking when reach the first viewing spot but if you have time, it is nice to follow the signs, you will find...
A trip to Shi Fen old Street and the waterfall are well worth the train ride out of central Taipei. (Taipei main station to Rui Fang then change onto the Pingxi line and get a train to Shi Fen). From the station the waterfall is just over a kilometre away which in itself is a nice walk with two suspension...
In comparison to Shifen Old Street, this street has fewer tourists around so you can engage in the sky lantern activity with your family/friends comfortably since there will be sufficient space. As there seems to be quite a number of mosquitoes, you may wish to apply your mosquito repellant before visiting the area.
Street side stall just at the train station.
This is the specialty at Shifen: fried rice wrapped within a chicken wing. There are 2 flavours to choose from peppery or the stinky tofu. We opted for the peppery version. Makes for a decent snack.
A nice little café serving Taiwanese drinks and snacks. A good place to take a rest with tasty smoothies after visiting the Shifen Old street. The staff are so friendly and warm that make you feel like having tea at home. Don't forget to take a look at the beautiful decorations while you are there.
I went there on 18/11/2017.
The food is traditional , but the hygiene is not that good!
I saw the staff use her hand to touch all around the environment , then use hand without glove to take food to customer !
Booked this hotel with the hope of getting a great view of the Pingxi Lantern festival on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year. It was not what we expected because the view went beyond any expectations we had! We could watch the whole event from the comfort of our room. We got room number 005. Only rooms 003,005,006,007...
