This area was an old US military property (a Coast Guard Station still exists nearby) and even the site of a lighthouse in the 1800’s. Remnants of the ammunition bunkers and lighthouse can be found if you search around. The property is now managed by the Bureau of Land Management for public recreational use. Surfing is common all along the peninsula and especially near the harbor entrance where the break is known as “North Jetty”. (BoyVsGlobe, Oct 2019)
