Hotels near Bonaventure Cemetery

Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

    Peaceful and Beautiful Cemetery
Bonaventure is a peaceful and beautiful cemetery on the grounds of a former plantation along the river. There are many magnificent live oak trees on the property as well. The grounds are nice and there is a variety of lovely monuments, statues, and headstones.

Bonaventure Tour was the highlight of our Savannah trip
Our visit to Bonaventure was without question one of the highlights of our recent Savannah family gathering. The cemetery is beautiful in every way. There is such a feeling of calm as you wander the endless aisles of family gardens and plots. Beautiful southern scenery and amazing history everywhere you look. And the artisans who carved the sculptures and tombstones! We enjoyed every minute of it. Our tour guide Dawn was a delight. Thank you Bonaventure!

    Worth a visit
This is a beautiful cemetery. I highly recommend taking a formal tour to learn all the history of this place and about cemeteries in general. We did not take a tour this time as we live in Savannah and have done it several times before. We took out of town visitors there just to take a lovely walk. It's also a nice quiet place to escape all the noise of the city.

    Worthwhile seeing while in Savannah
We took a walking tour here and enjoyed it. There is a lot to see and the setting is lovely. All the Spanish moss adds a bit of a creepy feel to the place. It is particularly lovely by the river. Because we did a tour, we had the benefit of a lot of history and got a good understanding of the different practices and traditions.

    Peaceful historic cemetery.
Spent a good hour+ wandering happily around this peaceful historic cemetery. There is a mix of different tomb styles, well maintained, plenty of greenery and roses. Free to park and enter. You can drive right into the cemetery which I found strange but drivers were very respectful. Tours available just outside the entrance.

    Bonaventure Cemetery
The Bonaventure Cemetery is worth your time while in Savannah. You could just do a drive through and admire the beauty or you could stop along the way and then wander about. There is some signage within the cemetery if you've looking to find the so called highlights. If you're into photography, you'll get some great photos while here.

    Quiet atmospheric burial site
We walked along the quiet paths of the Bonaventure Cemetery for an hour or so… It was so serene, solemn and mysterious… Some of the old statues looked exquisitely delicate and mournfully sad. We had a very nice stroll, but Colonial Park Cemetery, the place where history of Savannah comes alive, was more meaningful for us than beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery, which is a municipal burial site. Colonial Park Cemetery may not to be equally appealing visually, but it is a treasure trove of Savannah’s glorious past.

    A must see
We toured this cemetery when we were leaving town and had a rental car. It was well worth the visit. We were quick, but you could easily spend at least 2 hours here. We saw a few of the more famous graves- Johnny Mercer, Little Gracie. Looking at the other pictures on here I would have liked to have seen some more. My family is from London, so this cemetery reminds me of one from there. Definitely recommend!

    Beautiful--A Must-See
This is a MUST for a visit to Savannah! The beauty of the cemetery is truly unmatched. I would suggest picking up a map at the Bonaventure Historical Society before heading into the cemetery. It has some notable burial sites as well as a detailed map.

If you can only do one tour, do this one.
this was one of the highlights of our trip to savannah. we did not have a rental car for our visit, so we took a tour with gray line tours. (this is not walkable from downtown area). Having a tour guide was a huge advantage as we would not have known so much about this place without one. we enjoyed the look of this place with its moss covered trees and statues . this is well worth the time and money to see and explore.
