- Nick MFrenchs Forest, Australia1,003 contributionsWell worth a visit to Nijo CastleThis is a really well preserved castle which is well worth a visit. Although the rooms in the castle don’t have much in them, their decoration is very good. The grounds of the castle are very good also, and well looked after.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 12, 2023
- GelatinHythe, United Kingdom36 contributionsPerfect 👏 Place 👏 for 👏 all 👏NHK castle was a wonderland of delight! The castle was rich with history and information at such a reasonable price. It was an easy walk to there and the staff were very helpful in directing us to the ticket machine. When we got inside of the walls it was all in a simple path that lead us to the castles, and the inside was beautiful! So much rich history in such a beautiful place. Would recommend for everyone! But it is quite difficult for someone with a wheelchair since the ground is made out of gravel.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 20, 2023
- Norm the NomadAustralia1,246 contributionsReally good. Recommended.A day for exploring ‘old Kyoto’, via Subway; Bus and LOTS of walking. First, we visited Nijo-jo Castle (~400 years old) and is connected to the end of the Shogunate. It is particularly famous for its ornate (silk) Wall paintings (very nice) and its “Nightingale” floors (the floor boards squeak and make a bird-like sound when trodden on). I had heard it was a defence to protect the Shogun from Ninja assassins; but apparently it was just design fault. Oh well). And the surrounding gardens were very ‘Japanese’.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 25, 2023
- Martina1888Inverness, United Kingdom506 contributionsNijo CastleAs you might expect there are lots of crowds but it's still worth a visit. Ninomaru Palace with itss beautifully painted sliding doors (replicas) is absolutely gorgeous. There's was a small exhibition (additional 100¥) with some of the original sliding doors which I found very impressive. Nijo Castle is a must-see in Kyoto.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 29, 2023
- Kathleen H3 contributionsWorth a visit, especially for the gardensVisited the beautiful castle and gardens in mid-November. Unfortunately we were a week or 2 early for full fall colors, but the garden walk was still beautiful. The castle was interesting, but due to time we just toured on our own so did not have an opportunity to learn it’s history. We were able to walk there from our Kyoto hotel at Ace, get tickets and enter immediately around 10 am on a Wednesday.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 21, 2023
- rmartinmitchBoston, Massachusetts637 contributionsCrowded but beautiful castle complex. We had a chance to visit Nijo Castle during a recent trip to Japan. The temple complex is located in Kyoto. It is very large with multiple buildings and shines. The day we visited it was also very crowded, with many, many Japanese students, all dressed in uniforms, walking around the site. Pretty cool. The grounds and structures are beautiful - a wonderful place to explore - but we wouldn't call it 'peaceful'. It was crowded, with many visitors. Also, there were numerous gift shops and many of the shrines were asking for donations. It gave the experience of a bit of a commercial feel. But well worth visiting if you are in the area.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 24, 2023
- Anne SLeeds, United Kingdom571 contributionsBest Japanese Castle We Have SeenCame here as part of guided tour of Kyoto. From the outside this looks like many other Japanese castles, however the interior buildings have been restored and are completely different to anything we have ever seen before. It was very busy and we struggled to hear what our tour guide was saying, but all the information boards included English descriptions so we were fine walking around it on our own. As you walk along the floorboards "whistle" which is fascinating. Well worth a visit if visiting Kyoto. My husband was disappointed that photography was not allowed within the castle buildings but we bought some postcards instead. The castle has some lovely gardens but unfortunately we did not have enough time to explore these fully.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 30, 2023
- maaparMount Pleasant, South Carolina968 contributionsMust see castleVisited here for about 2 hours. Did the tour of the interior first and loved the chirping floors that were designed to catch intruders. Went on our own without a guide and there is enough English signage to get the history of the castle. Walked around the gardens which are really beautiful. Busy place but people spaced out well.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 20, 2023
- CantBeBothered18Adelaide, Australia143 contributionsGreat introduction to Japanese history about the ShogunIt was great to be able to walk through the Ninomaru-goten Palace (entry to the palace closes around 4pm). The detailed wood carving, the metal handles and the paintings all demonstrated the wealth and power of the shogun at the time. The large garden was nice to walk through. It was a good way to spend about 1 - 1.5 hours.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 5, 2024
- AmiyaMohanNoida, India13 contributionsBeautiful castleThis castle is truly amazing. It has such beautiful gates and intricate carvings. The wooden castle itself is a delight to the eyes. I am surprised why it’s not among the top sights in Kyoto. The gates are beautifully painted and the main structure is well preserved. If you’re in Kyoto, don’t miss it.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten February 16, 2024
