Start your exploration of Cappadocia at this UNESCO World Heritage Site—a magnificent valley filled with rock-carved churches and monasteries. Built during the Byzantine period, this historical settlement was a home to monks and a pilgrimage destination. Be awed by the intricate construction of the cave rooms and churches etched into the honeycomb landscape. The museum’s highlight is the Dark Church which is decorated with brilliantly colored frescoes that have been carefully preserved. Visit in the early morning for fewer crowds and join a guided tour to learn more about the site’s history and architectural secrets. A separate ticket is required for the Dark Church. – Tripadvisor

    Nature & Man- Stunning Creations
Goreme Open Air Museum is Stunning creations of nature and mankind. This area is rich in natural and mankind history and part of Cappadocia region. There are rocks and caves all around you, each telling its own story. Many different communities have lived in this region over different centuries and have left their own legacy. Must visit for lovers of history and nature. The valleys can also be experienced by trekking, although we did not trek due to hot weather. Hot air balloon ride is recommended to get best views of the area. Avoid summers due to lack of shady trees and hot weather. Goreme Open Air Museum in Cappadocia Region is a Highly recommended destination.

A must do when in Goreme.
We stayed in the heart of Goreme & walked the 1.5kms to get there. We hired 1 audio guide which did assist our understanding of the various buildings, however the various info boards at the entrances of the buildings provide almost the same amount of info if you don’t want to pay the extra 100 TL for an audio guide. We’re also glad we paid the extra 200 TL to enter the Dark Room. And don’t walk past the Tokali Church, as entrance is included in your general admission ticket. The paintings on the walls & ceilings are amazing, some are stunning & it’s just a pity many have been defaced. This is 2 hours well spent.

A very interesting couple of hours.
We caught the bus from Avanos to The Open Air Museum in Goreme and then walked about 1 km from the bus stop to the museum. The entrance price includes audio tour - whether you want it or not. It wasn’t too busy and we could take the tour at our own pace but the signage around the site wasn’t very clear at times so I would recommended the audio tour. There were toilets within the grounds and also in the museum cafe. An enjoyable couple of hours. Finding the bus stop on the way back was tricky and we were given lots of conflicting advice so we ended up getting a taxi back to Avanos.

Don't bother with the big extra fee for the "Dark Church"
Great site, but don't bother paying the big extra fee for the "Dark Church". Lots of interesting rock cut churches to see around the valley. Some heavily restored, others less so and perhaps the more moving for it. The Dark Church is small, only takes a quick look and is not very different to the others. We and everybody else thought it definitely wasn't worth the extra charge (recently hiked to TL100 = £4 in June).

A must see when In Cappadocia.
This is a mind blowing attraction. The distinctive geological ‘chimneys’ have been hollowed out and turned into communities for monks and nuns many hundreds of years ago. The medieval paintings of the churches carved out of the rock are spectacular. Well worth the climb from the car park.

    One of Cappadocia’s highlights,
Most interesting rock formations resulting in churches being carved within. Lovely frescoes showing height of Byzantine art. You have to pay extra to get into the Church with the most frescoes. We did not go in because there was enough to see in the other churches.

The ancient rock-hewn churches, boasting vivid frescoes, reveal tales of early Christian civilization. Great insights
Very interesting museum ... essentially a series of rock dwellings but they show the eveolution of early Christianity across the region. Lots of different areas to explore, but there is a lot of steep walking and some moderately challenging passages. So take care ,, and if in doubt ... hold back!

    Can’t Cap Cappadocia
The Goreme Open Air Museum is a fairly small visitor park appreciable mostly to those who marvel at the works of nature and man. The expansive, wondrous tufa formations within and outside the official confines of the park form both backbone and backdrop to the worshipful frescoes laid on the walls of cave warrens carved out as living quarters by early Christian refugees. First worlders used to highly organized attractions should be mindful that this site is pretty much “au naturel” with little guidance, railings, secured walkways or signage. You gird your loins and walk, stagger and even crawl up to your cave goal, and attain your objective oftimes only by grace of the courtesy and helpful assistance of strangers. Definitely a dangerous venture if you’re targeting the Dark Cave and aren’t in youthful top shape. The frescoes are worth both the fee and the effort, especially if you luck into tolerant or invisible guards whereupon you can take as many photos sans flash that you can sneak in.

Should be on the "to do" list of anyone visiting Cappadocia
It takes some time to get it into your head that this is an early monastic complex with churches dating from the 10th century. The paths round the complex are well maintained and easy to follow. Access to some of the churches is up fairly steep metal staircases. My wife and I are both in our mid-70s but we were able to manage them. Information boards dotted round the site provide the history of what you are looking at in English. There is one church, the Dark church, for which there is an extra charge but it is well worth it to see how they wall paintings are being restored and preserved. I think that the Goreme Open Air Museum should be on the "to do" list of anyone visiting Cappadocia.
