Hotels near KGB Museum

In Soviet time Hotel Viru was good enough to accommodate foreigners. It also had to be good enough for the KGB ... The museum represents a collection of the stories of two worlds. In one of them, mostly existing on paper, happy Soviet people enjoyed a life of plenty and friendship, led by a single wise political party. The other world – the real one – had a nature much more diverse and complicated.

Very interesting and a great view
This was very interesting and we enjoyed the guide's talk. The museum was just two rooms but is set is the hotel the HQ operated in and it was interesting to see the hotel as it is is now. One of the rooms still smells of the cigarettes they smoked! Being able to see Tallinn from the 22nd floor of the hotel was great as well.

    Brilliant visit
This was a really interesting place to visit. It's not so much about being a 'museum', but more about the history of the hotel, the items there, and the narrative of Mart, our brilliant guide, who gave a fascinating insight into Estonia pre 1991's independence. For anyone who remembers the history and the demise of the USSR this is well worth a visit.

An Important Piece of (Horrible) History
A (horrible) piece of history. The museum is quite a quick voisit, but definetely worth it. It's a great reminder of the horrorsm which should never be forgotten, and of things, which are currently happening around the world. The history presentationm which was created by a sand artist was captivating.

I found the tour pretty cool and interesting.
On the tour you are taken up in the lift with a key card from the hotel lobby to the top floor, you then ascend further via some stairs, there are two rooms and a balcony to look at, and you see the history of the hotel in the previous era and how the two KGB rooms were left abandoned. The tour organizer was very accompanying, I had booked the wrong date, and they happily changed our tickets. I found the tour pretty cool and interesting. The museum is at the very top of the hotel in the floor which doesn't exist! Our guide was very knowable and had the jokes and honesty. I would strongly recommend for anyone interested in this subject. One hour is enough time to see the place.

    A unique experience
An intimate look of a genuine KGB operations room from the early 1990s. Our guide (a blonde Estonian lady whose name I unfortunately did not catch) gave a spellbinding insight into the Hotel’s history. She really brought alive the realities of Soviet occupation, and the irrepressible Estonian spirit. The museum itself is small, but there is an interesting dual language display of the Hotel’s history. The panoramic views over Tallinn from the museum are stunning. The visit is a reminder of Estonia’s resilience and the unbreakable courage of its people.

    The world of the KGB
Well worth a visit as such places do exist even today. The mysterious world of the KGB and tense relationship between Estonia and the USSR unfold. Mainly just photographs and documents on show as well as the cells below ground level. On the outside road just looks like a comfortable middle class residence. These places always make you think!!

Excellent way to spend an hour.
Excellent tour with Pavel/Pasha. Reserve online. The English tours are usually fully booked. A Finnish tour is available and usually available the day of. Excellent views of the city, and I can’t emphasize how good Pavel was as tour guide! Funny and knowledgeable!

Really not much of a museum, sadly!
To be bluntly honest, this is NOT a museum. It's a peek behind the Iron Curtain, but it could be so much more. It's really just a couple of the rooms on the (secret) top floor of a Soviet era hotel where they monitored guests during the cold war. But...the building is still very much a functional hotel. I'd hoped they would have shown us HOW rooms were bugged and to be given an idea of what/how the KGB used the space. Instead, it was just a guide delivering a script he'd recited a thousand times before (as quickly as possible) and showing us a couple of dusty old rooms pretty much as the KGB left them when the Cold War ended. That's about it. It boasts lovely views of the city, though!
