Hotels near Fram Museum

A number of new attractions were available for the visitors at the Fram Museum, the highlight being the continuous 270 degrees surround film shown from the deck of Fram. The Fram Museum is located at Bygdøy, a short distance from the centre of Oslo and is easily reached by bus or, in the summer season, by ferry from the City Hall quayside. We focus on polar history, our centrepiece beeing FRAM, the strongest wooden polar ship ever, dating from 1893. Our closest neighbours are the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Norwegian Maritime Museum. The Viking Ship Museum and the Norwegian Folk Museum are within 15 minutes walk. The Bygdøy peninsula is therefore popularly known as the museum peninsula. Bygdøy is one of Oslo´s main places to go. The main exhibition in the Fram building has explanatory texts in ten languages and describes the three great Fram expeditions. We have exclusive polar souvenirs in our shop and probably the world’s biggest polar book store with 220 different titles.

Must go for polar explorer wanna-bes
Must go for maritime lovers and those interested in the polar expedition. Does the vessels used in the historical polar expeditions. Only disappointed by the types of souvenirs on sale - would have loved to buy some models of those polar ships , especially if they have them in bottles. Visitors should use the Oslo Pass and start out early from the city via bus 30. Then tour the 3 museums -- Kon Tiki, Gram, and the Norwegian Maritime Museum. Then take a boat ride back to the city. Excellent location as the boat end point is just beside the Akershus Fortress.

Add this museum to your itinerary
This museum is a little way out of the main city but it’s easy to get here on public transport and we’d say it’s well worth making the trip. It’s similar to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm with the ship taking centre stage and visible from all 3 floors. Exploring the deck as the northern lights dance above your head or watching waves crash around you is a such great touch and really adds to the overall experience, we really enjoyed our visit and found it very interesting.

    Brilliant
Very nice place to visit. The time passed by without knowing. That is how a museum should be ! They have found a way to get your attention in a fun way, by being part of the story, being able to climb aboard the ships, see how they lived, a cinema and all sorts of things. That's how you teach people , making it fun for them.

    Fascinating polar museum
This is a great museum to visit. We visited to see the ship Ronald Amundsen took to the Antarctic but it was so much more than we expected. It was lovely to be able to tour the ship and see how it was used. The information in the museum was fascinating and we left 2 hours later with newfound knowledge about Nansen. We took the bus out from central Oslo and were then able to visit the Kon-tiki Museum and Folk Museum as well.

    Fascinating piece of history
Only the main building was open when we visited but the exhibition was fascinating, not to mention the ship itself. Easy to get to by bus from the city centre. Took us about 2 hours to see. Mind you, get a 20kr coin if you want to use a locker.

    info rich about polar explorations
you have to read quite a bit from the wall, but it is worth the time - fascinating stories about polar explorations, with years of dedication and courage. the fact that having two real explorer ships inside the museum is amazing. nice sea view outside of the museums. kids may get a bit boring just running on the boats, but definitely recommended for adults who love adventures

    Top Museum
Top Museum if you are interested in Polar research. Warning: Please think carefully about the time period you enter at the parking machine. 60 euros are better invested in a dinner than in a parking fine!

Awesome Museum Dedicated to Norwegian Polar Exploration
We arrived at the Fram Museum via a harbor water taxi. The museum is awesome for those who are interested in historic polar exploration to the North and South Poles (and even those who are not familiar with polar exploration). The Fram can be boarded on its main deck and you can explore the lower two decks to understand the living conditions of the crew. Surrounding the ship is a three story walkway the flows with the history of Norwegian exploration and explorers. A wonderful way to spend 2 -3 hours in Oslo.

    Surprising experience
I was surprised by how much I loved this museum. Learning about the explorers, their hundreds of attempts, the relationships with the indigenous communities, was incredible. Thinking about who the equivalent to these early explorers is today. And to end with going on the actual Fram ship and being able to explore inside, to see the spaces and what they took and did… along with the projected images and sounds of being on the high seas - incredible. I didn’t do the other island museums and the Viking ship museum was closed, so not able to compare.

    We loved it!!!
I have to say we loved this museum. I loved the idea to take the little boat to arrive to the island of the Fram museum. Inside the Museum you will find all the history of the North and south pole explorations including the story of the Fram boat. Very strongly suggested, worth a visit!
