This is without doubt the best zoo we have ever visited. Set within a huge park, it is simply gorgeous and if you go in Autumn the colours of the leaves are amazing. Such an amazing range of animals, many we do not have in UK!

We loved our day at Vienna zoo. It took us about 4 hours to walk around. There’s a varied amount of animals and the enclosures were big. We did find food was expensive but found all of Vienna to be. Some of the signs in the park were in English and then the signs did disappear. But we did just enjoy watching the animals. We really liked the map and how it gave you pathways to follow to make sure you see everything. Would definitely recommend

Visited the zoo during a long city break in Vienna. It was my favorite zoo visit ever - and I have been to San Diego and Animal Kindom at Disney World amongst others, so there is stiff competition. It's not too big, so we could see nearly everything in the few hours we had available. Views and photo opportunities were wonderful. Everything clean and well maintained. Animal welfare seemed as good as could reasonably be given that it is a city zoo on a relatively small site.

We bought our tickets combined with the palm house and we had been expecting a small house with maybe some cactus and a few lizard displays. We were happily surprised! The house is not small inside and had a display of cave dwelling fish and insects and a very cool naked mole rat enclosure. This then takes you out into an open area with the aforementioned cactus but also tortoise flying birds gila monsters and little mice. Very cool! The outside rock garden is closed during the winter so we did not get to see it but all in all a nice activity to add to your itinerary.

I’m not a big proponent for zoos, but this one is definitely is about as good as it gets. Huge area you will need almost whole day if you want to see everything - we arrived at about 13.00 and were there until closing time and still missed the Palm house. Lots of animals, birds plants, big housing areas. Definitely worth a visit as a separate trip from Schönbrunn palace. You just won’t have enough time if you’d like to do it in one day.

LOVED the Vienna zoo!! Easily one of the best zoos we’ve ever been to. Was so worth the visit after looking for something to do one afternoon. Amazing collection of animals in very animal friendly surroundings.

The oldest zoo in the world, and (to us) one of the best (we've been to a fair few!) Nicely laid out, with both indoor and outside areas for all the animals. Vast range of animals, then (of course) there are the pandas ! A must visit place in Vienna.

Historic zoo but with fascinating contemporary feel. Information exceptionally well laid out with the chance to engage with world issues, climate problems and conservation of both animals and endangered human cultures. Large animals well housed with appropriate viewing areas. One of the best zoos worldwide and something for all ages. Not too crowded in the winter months - except the cafe. Well worth spending part of your Schoenbrunn day out at the TierGarten.

An expansive zoo located inside the equally expansive gardens of the Schönbrunn Palace. Tickets are not really cheap but the zoo has an amazing collection of animals for the children to explore. I just wish they had a one way trail around the place as we seemed to be repeating circuits in order to see the animals. We easily spent more than an hour inside the zoo. But it was the last thing we did before we exited the palace. It was a shame that many of the food kiosks inside were closed and it was lucky that we had our lunch in the restaurant at the top of the zoo and made our way inside from there rather than from the entrance near the fountain.

Based on visits in the past over 10 years ago, I always tell people that the Imperial Zoo is the best attraction in Vienna. Sadly, this is no longer necessarily true. I was particularly disappointed by the new giraffe and monkey houses. You used to be able to get very close to the animals: the monkeys would freely climb on ropes over the visitors' heads and the giraffes would lean down to sniff you. I also remember a "bat cave" where the bats would whirl around you, but I couldn't find it this time. Also, there used to be old cages you would climb into to view some animal enclosures, which I thought was a great experience - reversing perspective - but they no longer seem to be accessible. I also loved the meat pulley they used to have for the cheetahs but couldn't spot it this time. On top of that, many enclosures were abandoned (the animals were removed, not just hiding) and parts of the park were closed. Overall, it doesn't feel like you can get as close to the animals as you used to and there are significantly less animals on display now (I pretty sure they had more primates before, too). Also, at some exhibits you have to search for ages to find the correct information plates (best example: the penguin exhibit, where there are no plates inside the Franz Joseph House at all that describe the breeds on display.) Overall, a disappointing experience. While animal welfare is definitely a huge priority here, visitor experience has suffered.
