Hotels near Bairro Alto

Home to art galleries and a historic monastery (Convento do Carmo), Bairro Alto is one of the busiest districts of Lisbon after dark. Locals and travelers pack its narrow streets to hang out outside the area’s countless bars. Try ginjinha, a local liqueur, as you listen to live fado music. During the day, you can stroll through the neighborhood's narrow streets and check out the quaint boutiques and cafes. To get to Bairro Alto, take the eye-catching Glória Funicular at Liberdade Avenue. It’ll drop you off at the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, where you'll get commanding views of the city. – Tripadvisor

The neighborhood extends above Chiado and its borders can be identified in rua de O Seculo (west), rua da Misericordia and rua São Pedro de Alcântara (east), rua Dom Pedro V (north), calcada do Cambro, largo do Calhariz , rua do Loreto and praça Luís de Camões (south); it often tends to widen its borders to areas that are more strictly pertinent to other neighborhoods, such as Principe Real and Santa Catarina or Chiado itself. The Bairro Alto is a network of narrow streets arranged orthogonally, with buildings that are not particularly tall, of quite similar height, some better placed than others but generally without any particular merit. There are not many shops while places to eat are more widespread: there is no street that doesn't have at least one; all commercial establishments always have small entrances and the signs, when there are any, are inconspicuous; given the limited width of the cobbled streets, outdoor areas are rare. Cars are also scarce, as these are mostly limited-traffic streets, so you can get around on foot well. In any case, I don't find it a suitable neighborhood for a walk, because there are no interesting attractions to visit, or meeting places, except on the border with Chiado (the latter is instead much more suitable for walking, shopping, having an ice cream , an aperitif, etc. and in fact it is always lively at all hours). In the morning there are few people around, which increases in the evening but only to go and eat in one of the many places: on the street, even in the evening, you never meet so many people. It is certainly an important neighborhood in the city's history and a visit helps to better understand this city, but I would not put it among the places to absolutely see, especially if your stay in Lisbon is short.

We walked all the way up as the tram seemed to be taking a break despite many people waiting for it. We were looking for the street art but only places we found some, they had quite a bit of graphite. Grabbed some lunch at a square that was set up with huts serving all kinds of foods and drinks and grabbed a bite there and people watched while we eat. Some street musicians which were great and a couple of art students selling their paintings. Walked around and enjoyed the views, and weaved our way along the amazing streets some lined with restaurants till we got back to the bottom and along the water front and headed back to hotel.

It's not easy to walk through the high neighborhood, many slopes there. The highlight for me was the viewpoint of São Pedro da Alcântara, the best view of the city in my opinion. The high neighborhood is a place with many bars, restaurants, worth dining there and visit during sunset too. Don't waste time on the elevator is not worth it!

Popular area of Lisbon giving a magnificent view of the whole city!!! You can get lost in the alleys, take the tram or the typical funicular. There is life, street singers, restaurants, everything we love when we visit a city

I took a walk through Bairro Alto… • The street with the tram – beautiful architecture. • Streets, squares, and houses off the main tram routes – they used to be beautiful, now they’re in desperate need of renovation. • Restaurants and cafés – somehow lifeless and artificial. • Drunk tourists – if you want to get drunk, you don’t need to come to Portugal; do it at home with your family. I also went to a food festival in the park near Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara… • Overpriced draft Guinness (€7) – beer that had lost its taste, probably due to a keg that had been open for too long; resulted in nighttime vomiting. • Overpriced fake bifanas (€6) – just a plain pork schitzel with a slice of cheese, served in a bun.

Bairro Alto offers excellent breathtaking views of Lisboan or Lisboa. Excellent picturesque place with a charming inside. The Miraduro of Sao Pedro de Alcantara is just excellent. Food is great as well and Bairro Alto has a lot of hidden gems. Alongside with Chiado, Bairro Alto has the upper hand in prices and styles. We visited Lisboa entirely, 100% on sightseen trips and 95% on foot. Bairro Alto was one ogf my favorite places. miss Lisboa

Such places need time to explore and find all the interesting aspects of such a place. It’s better walking down than up. Being a maze of options you need luck to find all it has to offer. We went there by number 28 Tram and once we had finished had quite a Challenge getting a taxi. Note it’s best visit here start of your day so you have some energy left.

This was our first time in Lissabon. We stayed in hotel Borges Chiado which is very central between Chiado and Alfama and the tram 28 E and the metro pass directly. But we have walked most of the time. We loved the atmosphere and the people! The narrow streets in Alfama going up and down are lovely and there are tiles everywhere and not only in the museu de azulejos though we visited this too and was really nice. There are many places with live music and lovely food in the many, many restaurants. The weather was okay, but not really warm enough to sit on a terrace.

During the day this is a good place to wander to admire the historic architecture and charm. There are hills so you need to plan your route. At night this is a clubbing district with lots of bars and lots of noise, and it can be honky tonk. But there are some good restaurants and this is a good place to find a Fado show.

One of the areas you want to visit. Maybe approach the area from the side (walk to it from a different area to get to the top), then walk down hill to visit/see this area. Walking straight up this area, seems very steep. Your reward is Time Out Market is at the bottom of the hill.
