    Take a Guided Tour
Remarkable art museum with exhibits you will not see anywhere else in the world. We chose a guided tour. Our small group was lead by a very experienced guide who understood the works art we saw, but the artist who was responsible for each of them and the history associated with each piece. There is no way visiting on our own could replicate the experience had. Costs a little more but an excellent value.

    Overwhelming
There is so much in this museum it is quite overwhelming - if you have the i Amsterdam card I would suggest going twice (you can get time slots easily online). The Vermeer and Rembrandt paintings were the highlights for us but there are many other amazing paintings, and other objects of interest such as a huge model ship, ancient musical instruments and some incredibly detailed dolls’ houses. The modern section of the museum isn’t very memorable compared to the rest.

    Go Early!
Glad we went for a 10am booking as when we came out the entry queue was really long. We made straight for level 2, The Night-watch and Vermeer. This way there were only a handful of other visitors around. Later on when we walked past there was significantly more people and harder to get close, As you’d expect the cafe is extremely expensive and you’re better walking into the Museum Plein for a coffee before or after your visit. Easy to get exhausted by the number of works in there so do pick up their free highlights leaflet and use that.

Fabulous collection of Old Dutch Masters
THE Museum to go to, especially if you have only a limited amount of time. The collection is fabulous and Rembrandt's Night Watch is the star of the show. We spent over 5 hours here, and had a snack in their cafe which is great. Terrific apple pie just enough to keep you going. You will not want to miss this museum.

    Heaven for art lovers
We heard it was recently renovated. The museum is great, it's very big and there are alot to see and absorb and you need to spare enough time to be able to enjoy it. you may need guide. We usually go on our own, so it wasn't a problem. Don't miss the night watch gallery!

    Nice. Could take a day!
The building is beautiful, and has a great cafe/restaurant attached - highly recommend going! You could easily spend an entire day looking at everything in this museum! Definitely worth visiting, but I'd do it on a day where you don't have anything else booked. Maybe a good idea to visit the cafe for a mid-way break!

Well worth a visit, book in advance and take your time
A lovely museum, a great range of different exhibits with something to interest everyone. We loved the building, found it to be very spacious and this added to our visit. There was no sense of rush here and we had plenty of time to look at the things which caught our eye. Some of the paintings that really caught our eye included Vermeer's "The Milkmaid" the quality of light is incredible. There is one of Willem Heda's still life studies which is remarkable considering it was painted in 1635 and of course there is the Night Watch by Rembrandt which is absolutely massive. As a point of note, we visited in October 2023 and the Night Watch is currently being studied to try and identify the best way to preserve the canvas. In brief they are monitoring vibrations and this involves a number of devices including a glass cage/box device to help. This does mean you don't have the full picture to see, but it is well managed by the museum and is perfectly understandable. Another good thing the museum does, is that it has information cards for key exhibits which you can read when standing with those items. These cards are approx A4 in size, double sided and can be found in boxes near the exhibit. You can simply chose the language of your choice, pick them up and spend time reading about the subject before replacing them, great idea. The main tips we would give are: 1. Book in advance, saves time and means you will definitely get in at the time and date of your choice. 2. Don't rush when you're inside, there is a lot to see and plenty of room, so pace yourself. 3. There is a Van Gogh self portrait here, it is lovely but don't base your visit because of this, go to the Van Gogh Museum next door if you want to see his work.

Learned about Dutch art and history
Gorgeous art, sculpture and collections. We spent most of our time in the main galleries to see the Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and others. However we did venture into the smaller galleries and learned a lot about other artists. You can download the audio guide to your phone and listen to save the 5€ for the audio guide there. They have a QR code that you can use to get the guide. Our kids only lasted two hours but easily could have spent four there. It was the local school break time and they had special kids activities on when we visited.

    Amazing Art Inches Away
There are so many amazing pieces of art —whether it’s paintings, silver, glass, ceramics etc. Make sure that you visit the gallery showing the most famous pieces of art. We went in October and even then, it was crowded. The headsets are not useful. Don’t spend the extra money. FYI there are a lot of stairs. Elevators are available but for general attendees, you will be climbing the stairs a lot.
