Excellent tour, we did the tour with Anthony as our guide he was really informative and engaging. The tour was so interesting and full of engaging stories. He kept checking for questions and the tour was inclusive for everyone. I would highly recommend

    Lives up to the recommendations
After having a number of recommendations, we wanted to visit during our stay in Dublin. Tickets sell out quickly but we managed to get some cancellations on the day. We were so pleased that we did. It’s a long walk out from the city centre (took a taxi back) but worth it. Apart from the building itself, it is the staff who really make the difference. Adam our tour guide brought the history to life and was a thoroughly engaging storyteller. We would suggest ensuring you leave time to look around the museum side as well particularly following your tour as it puts it all into context.

Reserve tkts for Kilmainham Jail a month in advance
I took our adult granddaughters to Ireland in early February. We knew we’d just get a taste. Kilmainham was top of our list but the whole month was booked. We loved Kilkenny, Waterford, and Dublin most of all. I also loved the large delicious scones.

    Very interesting place
Awesome museum. This place is very interesting on its own, however our guide made it even more special. Totally worth visiting, especially for that ticket price. For non irish people, I highly recommend to get a short irish history lesson before visiting, so you can understand everything that was happening there.

    Well Worth It
Tried to get tickets after arriving in Dublin, but booked up for weeks (tried 09:00 cancellations , but they disappeared very fast). Just happened to be walking past, spoke to tour guide David (stood outside the front door) he said come back in 1 hour and I will give you a mini/quick tour for free. I was gobsmacked. I could be wrong on this (but museum/court house/cafe/gift shop) are possibly free (some or all) to visit (anyway). Fantastic mini tour - very worth it. I had a great time.

    Do not miss
Excellent tour. Really interesting background to the treatment of prisoners over the years. Do book well in advance. If sold out don’t despair check the night before you want to visit. Always cancellations. That’s how we got our tickets

You will learn about Irish Independence
Is it the best place I've visited? No. You have to know history to appreciate what occurred in Ireland when this place was built. Tour is fine, heck only 8 euro. Not expensive for a hour to learn about the history of Irish independence. Plus to see how they put 5 people in an 8 x 10 cell first hand, gives one pause.

The most impressive experience in Dublin!
I was here the second time and already impressed. Our guide Adam did his job great. He spoke very understandably (practically if English is not the native language). He told great stories. I can recommend this museum to everyone.

    Super recommended!
Message from March 2024: Personally, I think it’s worth spending the 8 euros, especially for those who are interested in Irish history. It’s worth more than the other two or three museums. If you don’t have much time, come here! ! ! For those who can't get a ticket, please remember to check it out from 9:00-10:00 every day, some quotas will be released at that time. I originally thought that Xiang Yu saw this attraction because it was too late, but after visiting it, I felt that it was well worth the money. I chose to enter at 15:40. Personally, I think the time I left was just right (you can choose the earlier time if you are afraid of being too busy to see the museum). The explanation lasts about an hour, but after the explanation there are three floors of exhibitions. The cultural relics are very detailed, and they are available in English and Irish. I am a person who can read all the text descriptions, so it took a lot of time. Personally, I think The museum should take at least half an hour. The scheduled closing time is 17:30, but you will be politely asked out at 17:15 because they need to allow time to prepare for closing. It's cool inside, so wear enough clothes in winter. Try not to bring large luggage, otherwise it will be troublesome for you to go back to the front hall to get it. There are no lockers, but storage baskets are provided. Personally, I feel it is a small financial risk. There are about 30 people in a group. I personally feel that the explanation speed is moderate to fast (people who are not good at English may have difficulty). It is very comfortable to walk around. What is more troublesome is taking pictures. The time does not allow you to take beautiful photos for the Internet, because it will be a while. Hall after hall of explanations (and there will be many heads), everyone will be waiting for you.

    An inspirational experience
A very thought provoking and educational visit especially with the added benefit of the tour guide Adam. Well worth a visit, if you can get tickets as this is the only negative we can give. Logging on at exactly midnight only to find the only tickets left are the last slot at 4.20. This seemed to be a coo on theme with the other guests so presumably organised tours are taking the prime spots which does seem a little unfair. This aside it was a great experience and has encouraged some further exploration of Irish history.

  • City Hall Hotels
City Hall was built between 1769 and 1779. The build took ten years to complete. When they decided to build City Hall a competition was advertised and 62 submissions were made. The winner of this Competition was Thomas Cooley, a young architect from London. At the time, James Gandon would have been the primary architect in Dublin, but his designs came second in the competition. Thomas Cooley was also tendered to build the Four Courts, however at 44 years of age, he fell ill and died and therefore James Gandon became the primary architect in the building of the Four Courts. If you look to the ceiling you will see that there is a stained glass dome, initially this was meant to be left open, in the same vein as the Pantheon, however given that we are in Ireland and it rains so often, they decided to cover it in. The stone work was done by a German man called Simon Vierpyl, and the stuccodore responsible for the gilded work was a man called Charles Thorpe. Initially when City Hall was built, it was built as The Royal Exchange. This was where you would have come to exchange Irish Punt into English Sterling. This was where merchants and guildsmen gathered to discuss their trading affairs. If you look out the West door onto Castle Street, that was where the banks were located and if you look out the windows to the east, where the trading happened. Over by the Olympia Theatre was where debts were collected. This really was an epicentre of trade in Dublin for the later part of the 18th Century. The Wide Streets Commission used the building in the late 1780s and 1790s to meet to discuss the planning of the city. If you walk around the outer ring of the Rotunda, you will notice that there is a distinct echo, this was done intentionally. When Thomas Cooley was designing the building, he designed it so that the echo would muffle private conversations that were had when walking around the room. Upstairs, in what are now the Council Chambers, there were coffee rooms. Coffee House Culture in the Dublin in the 18th and 19th Century was quite popular. Coffee was a luxury item and therefore very expensive to buy, and this made it very fashionable in those days. In 1800 the Act of Union was introduced and this had a devastating effect on the economy in Dublin, and by 1827 the currency was amalgamated. The building fell into disuse and was then rented out. This was actually where O’Connell gave his first public address on the Act of Union and it is one of his most famous addresses. In 1852 this building was bought by Dublin City Council, and they had partitions put up for privacy. Since then, in 1998- 2000 Dublin City Council restored the building to it’s original state as part of a refurbishment plan for the millennium.

The Custom House, which has been a Dublin landmark for over two hundred years, was the architectural masterpiece of James Gandon. It was completed in 1791 after a ten-year construction period. This exhibition outlines the history of the Custom House. It describes events in the building during Easter Week 1916 and considers the history of the Custom House and its occupants from then until 1921, when the building was completely destroyed by fire during the War of Independence. The Visitor Centre itself is an example of some of the finest neo-classical architecture in Europe & ensures that this wonderful space is accessible by all.
