Hotels near Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland. Please note that the "Honours of the Kingdom Exhibition" is currently closed for essential maintenance works. The Crown Room and Jewels are open to visitors.

Must see! So impressive with lots of history
The number one thing to do in Edinburgh, in my opinion. It is impressive to see from any angle around town, but there is something special about going in and seeing it from the inside. Great photo ops. Easy to see in a few hours. Don’t miss it!

    Lovely place
I loved it but it was too crowded and the audio guide for kids I bought is one the most boring I have ever used! It is a pity because I think a good guide can really make your visit unforgettable. As it happened for the Dunnottar Castle.

    Fantastic castle and grounds.
First, make sure you reserve a timed entry well in advance. I downloaded the audio guide and my wife and I shared my Bluetooth air buds. One of the better audio guides I have experienced. The history and surroundings are fascinating and the view is great. We enjoyed exploring the castle.

    Huge Castle with Great Views
This castle is a must see. The views of the countryside below were amazing. This will take all day to to tour this huge place. There are wonderful displays showing the history. It was also very crowded. There is a nice cafe inside for a tasty lunch.

    Both Welcoming and Intimidating
This is the majestic castle that sets the standard for all others. Towering high above the city, Edinburgh Castle commands respect from the moment you lay your eyes on it. Housing some of the most precious relics, artifacts and jewelry in the world, this stronghold practically dares one to threaten its mighty grandeur. Good luck. Like its people, this Scottish stronghold is both welcoming and intimidating. Well worth the visit.

    Amazing...but get tix early
Get your tickets early! Don't walk up expecting to be able to go that day. I was disappointed that the castle was not visible from the Royal Mile entrance due to the stadium seating up. But you can still see its grandeur from the other sides. We had the audio guides and the guidebook. I liked the Margaret chapel the best. Don't miss the prison part - very cool, but a bit off the beaten path.

    Get your Tickets Early!
We visited off of a cruise ship and used the hop on hop off bus to get over to the Royal Mile. Book your tickets in advance, we were there in late June on a weekday and tickets sold out for the day just after noon so there were a lot of disappointed people there. We had been before, the castle is reasonably priced and the lineups aren't too bad even on a busy day. It was sunny this time so the views were great.

    Really Worth Seeing
My husband and I came here while on our honeymoon and really enjoyed it. We bought tickets a week in advance for the guided tour in case they sold out (which they were on the day we were there). We ended up doing the self-guided tour due to the amount of people there. Beautiful grounds and a lot to see! Informative and very historic. Carve out about 3-4 hours to go through/read everything without feeling rushed. We stood at the cannon at 12:30pm to get a front row spot for when it fired at 1pm. There are bathrooms located in the restaurant next to the cannon. There is a whiskey store and a gift shop inside the castle too. This was very worth going!

    Edinburgh Crowning Glory
Well I am sure it has all been said before … If you visit this great city take the walk and behold the wonder that is Edinburgh Castle. The Crown Jewels are a delight to see. The views across the Firth are spectacular. The weaponry on display are terrific, the artefacts and medals inspire imagination.

    Nice setting for afternoon tea
Visited the castle and had afternoon tea here. Similar to holyrood palace, there is a lot of history here. Self-guided tour of the facility with a map available at the entry. Nice views of the city from the castle. Afternoon tea was a good break from the crowd. Typical finger sandwiches with desert and of course, hot tea.
