Orange welcomes mild temperatures and mostly clear days in summer, making a meander through the vineyards or a tour around the local breweries a fun (and thirst-quenching) affair.
Spend a Sunday morning alongside locals at the Blayney Rotary Market, which has rows upon rows of stalls selling seasonal fruit, vegetables and other local produce as well as handmade crafts.
Gather the kids and head out to one of the orchards on the foothills of Mt Canobolas, just 10 minutes from the center of Orange, for a fruit-picking adventure. Cherry season lasts from mid-November through January.
Orange is fast gaining a reputation for local brews including cider. You may want to hop on the brewery/cidery trail and find out all about the orchard-to-bottling process of handcrafted beer and cider. Bonus: lots of tasting opportunities to keep you hydrated.
Living up to its label as Australia’s “color city”, Orange puts on an impressive display of fall colors this time of year. With mildly warm to slightly chilly temperatures, it’s the perfect time for some leaf-peeping action whether you’re deep in Nangar National Park or just wandering around the tree-lined town center.
The Orange Food Week in Blayney is a long-running regional food festival with a huge following. Every April, local producers and winemakers celebrate the fall harvest and vintage season with an abundance of good food and wine.
Pick up a brochure detailing the Orange Heritage Trail at the visitor information center and embark on a walking tour around the city, stopping at some of the finest buildings of historical significance.
The International Balloon Challenge—in the small town of Canowindra, less than an hour from Orange—draws thousands of visitors every April, when the skies are filled with colorful hot air balloons at sunrise and in the last hour before sunset. It’s a truly magical sight you don’t want to miss.
Orange attracts hordes of tourists during winter even though temperatures can get really cold with occasional snowfall. It’s the perfect time for evenings spent over cozy meals and warming reds (think: pinot noir) at the city’s many fabulous restaurants.
The city has a lively art scene with galleries and studios sprinkled across town. Crisp mornings are ideal for a little walkabout to seek out the works of local artists at the Corner Store Boutique, set within a heritage corner shop.
Meet local producers and taste their seasonal fruits and vegetables at the Orange Farmers Market, held every second Saturday of the month. Make some room in your luggage to bring home some regional cheese, olives and gourmet preserves.
The Orange Winter Fire Festival draws a massive crowd every year, so make sure you don’t miss this. It’s a weekend of fabulous food, mulled wine and great music—all enjoyed around warm, roaring bonfires.
You know it’s the best time to be out and about when the parks are a carpet of green covered with hundreds of colorful spring blossoms. The weather’s cool and dry—you’ll most likely never be rained out—so pack in as many outdoor activities as you can.
Mount Canobolas, a dormant volcano, is a cool spot for birdwatching, with several scenic picnic areas to boot. We recommend the Spring Glade walking track, about 1.8 miles, for an easy hike to the summit.
Hungry for a foodie adventure? Join a local guide on a walking tour to seek out the best that Orange and its neighboring towns and villages have to offer, from farms and cellar doors to artisan boutiques and markets.
The Orange Wine Festival in October celebrates the best local wines with endless tastings, masterclasses, night markets, food and wine pairings, and more. It’s a top-selling event, so book your tickets early.
