    Wonderful square
Wonderful square that seems to be the starting point to explore the area. Many places to shop and eat. We used it. As the starting point of the walking tour that Rick Steves has put together online. Fairly crowded for November but still a joy to take your time and simply walk around. Enjoy.

Nice area, but very crowded New Year's Eve
Came to Puerta del Sol for New Year's eve (both in the day and night time). Daytime it was crowded, but not generally bad. Night time, it was more crowded than expected to the point the crowd was controlled. Once the clock struck midnight, the fireworks came. Certainly nice to see, but not as big or vast as what you'd see in a waterfront. If your intention is to see the fireworks, come early before the crowds come and the station exits are closed

    The Liveliest Plaza In Madrid
Since our hotel was just off of Puerta Del Sol we got to see and experience it at all hours of the day. Based on the crowds, it was the central heart of Madrid. Both locals and tourists gathered in large numbers to hang out, eat or drink, sightsee, shop (El Cortes Inglés was our favorite) and catch the metro or train. We even got to watch a band marching led by a banner printed with Rosario. Popular attractions were the Tio Pepe sign (at night), Kilometer zero marker, and the standing bear statue, and Oso y Madrono (touch the bear’s feet for luck). The statue of King Charles III stood in the center of a fountain, in recognition for the many that were built throughout Madrid during his reign. The weekends seemed to never end as people were wandering around and making lots of noise until the early morning hours. A caveat for those staying in hotels around Sol like us. Don’t miss visiting Sol.

Lively Pedestrian Area in the Center of Madrid
A lively pedestrian-packed plaza in the heart of Madrid. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby including the large department store, El Corte Ingles. The iconic “Tio Pepe” sherry sign that’s dominated the Puerto del Sol for a long time is still there. It’s a short walk to the Plaza Mayor from here, also another major historic plaza of Madrid.

Puerta del Sol gateway to Madrid
The Plaza is one of the busiest and most central gateways to the city of Madrid. Literally, Puerta del Sol faces the east where the sun rises and bathes under the sun all day. The massive square connects to all roads to Madrid, and is surrounded by many stores and landmarks. No tourist will miss it~ the location is where all roads begin, from 0 kilometer. You can hang out anytime, sadly no benches, the square is familiarly similar to NY Times Square where the midnight crowd’s still partying ’till dawn.

    Iconic plaza
The Puerta del Sol is the center of the Iberian Peninsula. The Puerta del Sol is a famous plaza home to the iconic Kilometro Zero, the bear and strawberry tree statue, and the statue of Carlos III among other things. There are many shops in the Puerta del Sol as it is in the shopping district of Madrid. I highly recommend stopping by this iconic plaza.

    Heart of Madrid !!
Puerta del Sol means Sun's Gate. This popular square in right in the center of Madrid. It is the main hub of all transport. It is very popular with tourists and locals. The party atmosphere at this place goes on till early morning. Weekday or weekends does not make any difference over here. It is always crowded. One can come directly here from airport via metro. The major landmarks located here are Old Post Office, President Palace, Statue of Bear and Strawberry Tree, Kilometer Zero and Charles 111 Statue in the middle of fountain. No trip to Madrid is completed without visiting this amazing square. The vehicles are not allowed in this circle.

Hotels in nearby neighborhoods

  • Centro Hotels
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.

  • Barrio de Salamanca Hotels
Broad, tree-lined avenues with pretty streetlights frame the neighborhood of Barrio Salamanca. With beautiful condominium buildings that make up most blocks in this area, this part of town is refined and quiet. It is also host to a few of the city's large shopping avenues, including Calle Serrano and Calle Jose Ortega y Gasset. A walk down these streets will reveal upscale chains, small boutiques, and plenty of opportunities for shopping or checking out the stylish displays. The locals here are polished and fashionable, the atmosphere is leisurely, and the lush Retiro Park on the southern border is yet another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. A stroll through Barrio Salamanca is all about admiring the beautiful architecture, window-shopping, and people-watching in this upper-crust corner of Madrid.

  • Chamberí Hotels
Multi-story residential buildings decorated with ornate balconies line the traditional, quiet, and pretty streets of Chamberí. Humble storefronts and neighborhood taverns are scattered across the lower levels down every block, and here and there, there's a cluster of tables on the sidewalk. It isn't ever crowded, but people are always out, poking into the tiny bakeries, hardware stores, and tobacco shops, or ducking into a bright, unadorned cerveceria to have a coffee or beer by the bar, flip through the paper, and check the sports score. The round Plaza Olavide, where the fairly regular network of streets breaks form, is among the most green and lively spots. Restaurants line its circumference and sought-after outdoor tables fill the center of the plaza, where people relax to the sounds of kids playing and street musicians' tunes.

  • Malasaña Hotels
Hip bars and galleries, independent theaters and music venues, young people with tattoos and funky hair, narrow winding streets — this is Malasaña. Near the center, Plaza Dos de Mayo is a gathering of friends outside bars, dog owners, artists under craft tents, and creative types with notebooks and sketchpads on the plaza’s benches. It may not be as neat and tidy as many other parts of the city, but this only adds to the Malasaña edge. Shops and bars here range from hippie-crunchy to upscale trendy, and on weekends, the streets are bustling around the clock as the nightlife progresses from dinner to bar to disco to late-night food. On the west side of the neighborhood is the subdistrict called Conde Duque, named after a large pink fort in its center that has been converted into a cultural center for exhibitions and performances. Prettier yet just as edgy, this intimate corner of Malasaña is home to a young international community.
